Here's how the Sub-Section 5A-North boys' golf race played out on Friday

Matt Goodwin drives off of a hole on the back nine at the Minnewaska Golf Club during the sub-section meet on Friday.

It was a wild afternoon as the scores came in at the Minnewaska Golf Course, during the Sub-Section 5A-North meet.

West Central Area, with only one senior on the roster, took first place honors with a score of 343. They barely edged the Jaguars' boys golf team, who came in with a 345.

WCA's Matt Wagner was the second place individual medalist with a score of 78. Logan Pfingsten took sixth with an 86.

WCA head coach Kraig Hunter stated following the meet, "After our top golfers came in (Wagner and Pfingsten) we were trailing B-B-E by one stroke."

Here's how it played out from there... Calvin Anderson came in next with a solid round of 91, but B-B-E's #3 golfer (Jordan Lewis) shot an 89 putting the Knights behind by 3 strokes. B-B-E's 4th golfer (Karl Knutson) came in with a 93. In the next group, WCA's Luke LaValley needed to come in with a 90 to tie B-B-E and an 89 to beat them. LaValley came in with an 88 giving the Knights a 2 stroke lead. They just had to hope B-B-E's #5 and #6 golfers didn't have lower than a 92 and they did not, sealing the Knights victory.

Boys' golf team standings at Sub-Section 5A-North:
1 - West Central Area
2 - B-B-E
3 - Chokio-Alberta/Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley
4 - Wheaton/Herman-Norcross
5 - Ashby
6 - Osakis
7 - Browerville

Area fastpitch playoff results:
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg gets a shot at a section championship berth by virtue of their 14-5 win over Edgerton today in a Section 3A winner's bracket game. They lost to Wabasso in the winner's bracket final, though, by a 14-8 score. This sets up a rematch between K-M-S and Edgerton, coming next Tuesday (June 1) in a loser's bracket final game. The winner of that has to take on Wabasso in the Section 3A championship (June 3)...and they have to beat the Rabbits twice to advance to the state tournament.

Jaguars fastpitch is nipped in 5A-West semis 3-2 by Osakis, a tough loss to swallow

Center fielder Laura Johnson made a simply spectacular pop fly catch in the bottom of the third inning against Osakis tonight.

Coming back to the dugout after the huge pop fly grab.

The Jaguars' fastpitch team finishes 6-12 overall, while Osakis improves to 18-1 overall. The Silverstreaks advance to the Sub-Section 5A-West championship game, coming this Thursday at 5pm at Minnewaska Area High School.

Top-seeded Osakis will face #2-seeded Kimball Area for the sub-section crown. The #2-seeded Cubs improved to 10-10 overall by overcoming a one-run deficit
and defeat #6-seed Eden Valley-Watkins 3-2.

See a photo gallery with 125 shots from the game online at http://saukherald.mycapture.com

  • A light game recap:

The Jaguars scored first, on Michelle Sanders' RBI-single in the third inning. Osakis then tied the game in the bottom of the third with two hits and an unearned run. Sanders' fired a strikeout, then Anna Marthaler ran down a hit to the right-center gap for a tough pop fly catch. For the third out, Laura Johnson made a thrilling pop fly catch in center field, getting back to the dugout with at least two major grass stains on her uniform.

In the fifth inning, the Jaguars went down 1-2-3. They broke through in the top of the sixth. Their rally started with a double shot over the right fielder's head by Laura Johnson. The senior stole third on a passed ball, then scored with an RBI hit up the gut by Maggie Gruber.

Hoping to hold onto the 2-1 lead, the Jaguars fought hard in the bottom half of the frame but the Silverstreaks managed to plate two runs for a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the 7th, Brittany Roelike hit a shot to the shortstop, followed by a one-out bunt by Morgan Knutson. She managed to beat the 5-3 throw, then stole second and third base to get into scoring position.

A 3-2 count pitch went by as a strike against the Jaguars' final batter - a bitter way to end the team's season.

Jaguars' pitcher Michelle Sanders had only 1 walk in a complete-game effort, in which she scattered five Silverstreaks' hits and earned six strikeouts. A heckuva performance for a sophomore.

Read about the entire game in next week's local papers.

In a home game tonight at Elrosa, the Jaguars' baseball team lost to the Osakis Silverstreaks 15-2 in five innings. The score pretty much says it all. Giving up 7 runs in the third inning spelled doom for the Blue and Silver, who fall to 7-11 overall to end the regular season.

Up next for the Jaguars' baseball team: the Sub-Section 5A-West quarterfinal game at Upsala, taking on the #3-seed Upsala/Swanville Patriots in a 3:30pm game on Friday (May 28).

Jaguars' fastpitch wins 2-1 with two runs plated in the bottom of the 7th inning in sub-section quarter's - Jaguars' baseball sweeps Rockford at home

Head coach Amanda Primus rallies her troops.

The Jaguars' fastpitch team won 2-1 against visiting Royalton tonight in a thrilling playoff game.

After four scoreless innings went by, the Royals plated a run in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead that lasted into the seventh inning.

To start the bottom of the seventh, senior Anna Marthaler and freshmen Brittany Roelike both got on base with no-out singles. Marthaler then tied the game after scoring on a Royals' error. Then after loading the bases, the Jaguars won the game when a grounder by sophomore Michelle Sanders was thrown wild by the Royals' shortstop to allow senior Morgan Knutson to cross home plate.

Sanders earned 12 strikeouts, to go against no walks and four hits in a complete-game performance.

They will play #1-seed Osakis next Tuesday night at 5pm at Minnewaska Area, taking a 6-11 overall record into the Sub-Section 5A-West semi-finals. They finished 4-10 in the Central Minnesota Conference this season.

The win over Royalton marks the sixth straight season that they have advanced to a Section 5A, sub-section final four round, dating back to 2005. It is also the 19th overall playoff-opening win for the B-B-E fastpitch program, out of 22 seasons dating back to the spring of 1989. The program hold the record for the most playoff-opening wins at B-B-E in any sport.

Osakis survived a first-round scare from Upsala, after winning 9-8 on Friday night in another sub-section quarterfinal game.

**Update on Sunday morning...a look around Sub-Section 5A-West:
Osakis defeated #8-seed Upsala by a 9-8 margin in their quarterfinal matchup on Friday. The Silverstreaks, who are the number one seed and were ranked #8 in the May 5 coaches' fastpitch state rankings, drubbed the Cardinals in a Prairie Conference double-header on May 6 by scores of 9-2 and 13-2 (6 innings).

Osakis takes a 17-1 overall record into the semi-final round of Sub-Section 5A-West. Their lone loss of the season was to Swanville on May 4 by a 8-6 score.

Kimball Area, the #2-seed, defeated visiting Swanville Area (#7-seed) by a 5-2 score.

Sixth-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins knocked out the number three seed Browerville Tigers 15-14. They advance to face Central Minnesota Conference rival Kimball Area in the other semi-final game on Tuesday at Minnewaska.

Junior Nate Theilen is welcomed back to the dugout after scoring in the fifth inning against Rockford during game 2 of the Jaguars' double-header.

The Jaguars' baseball team won game one of a double-header in Elrosa against Rockford by an 8-3 score. Sophomore Brady Weller picked up a complete-game win on the mound.

In game two, they led 5-0 after five innings and looked like they were on their way to a comfortable win. Brandon Roelike knocked a two-RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 5-0.

What an ending! Elrosa Saints save the best for last as they defeat Spring Hill 4-3, winning with Kuefler's walk-off RBI single

Another classic Elrosa vs. Spring Hill game played out tonight. Shown below is the scoreboard at Saints Field following the game.

A few Saints' reserves stand at attention during the National Anthem prior to tonight's game.

Kevin Kuefler's RBI-single shot through the first/second baseman gap to right field scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

  • Game recap...
In the second inning, Jonathan Nietfeld's RBI-single on two outs drew first blood. Saints' third baseman Mike Whittemore tagged out Jeff Schoenberg, who tried stealing home plate, to get out of the top half of the frame.

Jeff Schoenberg becomes roadkill in the first inning.

Whittemore would have the lone Saints' hit of the game through the first four innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Chargers added to their 1-0 lead with an RBI-single from Aaron Welle. They added to it in the fifth, with a pop fly attempt in left field on a shot by Sean Schoenberg grazing Andy Mages's glove to bring in Jamie Terres from second base.

Finally in the fifth, veteran Saints' manager Pat Illies led off in the bottom of the fifth with a double shot deep to the center field fence. Steve Mueller followed with a single, and Jonathan Olmscheid then hit an RBI-single out to left field for a 2-1 score.

The Saints would leave two stranded, however, with Jonathan Nietfield grabbing Whittemore's deep hit to center field for the third out.

Aaron Vogt took the mound in the seventh inning, earning two strikeouts to spark the Saints' defense. A double albong the left field line in the eighth was all the Chargers would get off of the Saints' reliever, as he earned two strikeouts on the final two batters in the top of the ninth inning to give fans hope for a miracle.
Things didn't start out too well in the top of the ninth, however, with Illies and Mueller both hitting long pop flies to center field.

Aaron Vogt pitched three strong innings of relief.

Then on a full count, Jonathan Olmscheid was drilled in the helmet by an errant Schoenberg pitch. After getting to first base, he was replaced by pinch runner Darren Wander.

Aaron Vogt, who gives pitchers quite a strike zone, drew a walk and make Saints fans think this just might happen.

The play of the game then took place, when Randy Duevel hit a simple would-be grounder down the middle. It appeared that would be the end of the game, as Chargers' shortstop Jamie Terres scooped it up. He bobbled it, though, letting Duevel safely take first and load the bases.

Saints' leadoff hitter Matt Middendorf took center stage, as he took an 0-2 count pitch from Schoenberg and sent it out to left field, just inside the left-center gap. Wander was well on his way across home plate as the ball fell in outfield grass, and Vogt was given the green light to round third and go for home. With his full strides giving him an extra charge, Vogt slid head first with his left arm stretched out to grab home plate. The slide came just in front of the tag of catcher Nate Terres, and the game was tied at 3-3.

On the next batter, Schoenberg gave an intentional walk to Whittemore, bringing bases loaded once again.

Kevin Kuefler had struck out in his previous four at bats in the game. It didn't matter, though, as he took one of Sean Schoenberg's fastballs and knock it through the first and second baseman into right field. The hit allowed Randy Duevel to score safely from third base, sending the Saints' dugout into a frenzy as they pulled out the come-from-behind win against their neighboring division rivals.

The four-year old traveling trophy (a beer keg with a fancy paint job) would not leave Elrosa on this night.

Aaron Vogt's slide for the third run that tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Elrosa improves to 4-0 in the Stearns County League North with the win. Spring Hill is now 3-1 in the division.

Here's a video of the game-winning run coming across home plate in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Up next for the Elrosa Saints: a trip to Greenwald on Saturday, May 22, for a 1:30 game against the Cubs.

This weekend's Stearns County League games (Sunday):
Lake Henry at Richmond (1:30)
Meire Grove at Roscoe (1:30)
St.Martin at Farming (2:30 start time)
