Jaguar baseball team blanked in playoff opener

St. John's Prep defeated the B-B-E Jaguar baseball team 3-0 in the Sub-Section 5A-West quarterfinal round tonight in St. Cloud. The game was broadcast on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood in D-Mac's final play-by-play coverage of any B-B-E action during the 2011-12 school year. (Thanks, D-Mac, for all your work this year on behalf of the B-B-E Jaguars and the fine businesses who support your coverage!)

The Jaguars finish with a season record of 9-12, while the Johnnies improve to 13-6 heading into the semifinal round next Tuesday in Cold Spring. In another quarterfinal game, top-seeded Browerville eliminated Osakis 3-1 at the Elrosa Saints diamond this afternoon.

Other information will be posted on Saturday. Time for a break!

It was a traumatic day for me to see the scene of that bus accident. While I didn't have any children on the bus, my heart sank and I was quite shaken up as I walked through the grassy ditch by Highway 55 and saw "B-B-E School District #2364" painted on the side of the bus. Thank God, none of the kids were seriously injured. Before gathering myself and getting to the work at hand, all I could think about was the terrible experience the students went through while being guided off of the bus and transported to the Glacial Ridge Health System in Glenwood approximately two miles south of the scene.

Parents, can you hug your children too often? I don't think you can.

Jaguar boys' and girls' golfers advance to Section 5A!

Aaron Roelike drives on hole number 13 at the Minnewaska Golf Club today. He is one of only two seniors on this year's golf team.

Both B-B-E golf teams advanced to the Section 5A meet that takes place next Thursday in Benson.

It's the first time that's happened since 2008. Quite an accomplishment for the golf program!

The boys' squad tied Osakis for second place when the final tallies came in. On the tiebreaker, B-B-E won with their fifth-best score beating the Silverstreaks' fifth-best score.

West Central Area won both sub-section titles.

In a related accomplishment, B-B-E's Peyton Miller won the Sub-Section 5A-North individual championship by earning the medalist title today. Fellow teammate Jordan Wieberdink was fifth overall.

More will follow later.

Tough news out of Grove City, as the A-C-GC Falcons baseball team defeated the Jaguars 5-4 in the final game of the regular season. A side note...Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood will broadcast the playoff opener on Friday at Dick Putz Field between the B-B-E Jaguars and St. John's Prep.

Fantastic news on the Jaguar girls' golfers

After today's results came in from the final Central Minnesota Conference meet at Shamrock by Corcoran (the meet hosted by Rockford), Peyton Miller and Jordan Wieberdink of the B-B-E Jaguar girls' golf team landed spots on the All-CMC squad. The fine tradition of excellence in high school golf continues, something all B-B-E fans can be proud of.

The B-B-E boys' and girls' golf teams now gear up for the Sub-Section 5A-North meet next Wednesday at the Minnewaska Golf Club.

Jaguars fastpitch loses sub-section quarterfinal game

Osakis, the second-seeded team in Sub-Section 5A-West, won 12-2 in five innings today against the B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch team. It marks the third year in a row that the Silverstreaks have knocked the Jaguars out of the playoffs in the sub-section quarterfinals.

Outstanding athletic careers for three great B-B-E athletes came to an end with the loss. Michelle Sanders, Raeann Sorenson and Amy Bast have all been a part of the varsity fastpitch team since the 2008 season...five years ago when they were just eighth graders.

Their leadership and talent will be missed.

Jaguars fastpitch wins playoff opener, baseball drops two at HL-W-W

The Jaguars fastpitch team won their playoff opener via shut out for the second straight year.

The Jaguars fastpitch team led 9-0 after 4 1/2 innings were in the book tonight against St. John's Prep in the Sub-Section 5A-West play in round. The final score was 10-0 in a five-inning game.  They've now won every playoff opener since 2004. Up next: a trip to #2-seed Osakis for a quarterfinal round game tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00pm.

At Winsted, the Jaguars baseball team lost 6-2 and 13-5 to slip below .500 for the first time this season. They did finish 7-7 in the Central Minnesota Conference, good for fourth place alone. It's their best mark in the CMC since the 2008 season, when they finished as runners-up with a 10-4 record. Maple Lake won this year's title with a 13-1 record; their lone loss was to B-B-E. Pierz clinched second place with a 3-2 win at Rockford tonight.

Area baseball scores on May 17:
Melrose Area 11, Sauk Centre 4 (Mainstreeters led 4-2 after the 1st inning and then faded fast)
New London-Spicer 11, Minnewaska Area 5
Maple Lake 8, Holdingford 1
Rockford 16, Pierz 2
Upsala/Swanville Area 13, Eagle Valley 1
Paynesville Area 7, Albany 6 (Bulldogs clinch a share of the WCC-North title)
St. John's Prep 6, Royalton 0

In other news, the Minnewaska Area school district ended both the soccer and cross country programs at a special school board meeting on Wednesday night. Beginning next year, the fall sports at Minnewaska will consist of girls' tennis, girls' swimming and diving that is paired with Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, volleyball and football. It is really big news in my opinion, and in the case of soccer, the move to cut the sport should have taken place years ago due to declining enrollment and budgetary issues they've had since 2002.

In the past seven seasons, the Jaguars have hosted a playoff opener six times. In 2007, they opened the playoffs as the #6 seed at #3-seed Osakis and won a 17-6 blowout on their way to a sub-section
runner-up finish and a Section 5A Final Four berth.

Doubleheader baseball game this Thursday is in Winsted

Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted hosts varsity baseball games in Winsted this year. Directions to the park, from Howard Lake Journal sports reporter Aaron Schultz, reads as follows:

"This year they are playing in Winsted. Right on the main drag, CO RD 1. If you head south out of Howard Lake into Winsted you can't miss it. It's right in the middle of town."

HL-W-W hosts B-B-E this Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00pm. The Jaguars are in a right race for the number two seed in Sub-Section 5A-West behind Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Browerville, who is 15-1, is the likely number one seed.

B-B-E Jaguar fans...keep voting for the "Athlete of the Year" at KSAX.COM!

Here's the link: http://ksax.com/article/12519

Obviously by now the best vote is for the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team, as voting for any other option will give the Browerville wrestler a chance at winning it. Cael Lorentz, a third grader at Browerville elementary school, is a very good youth wrestling athlete, but by no means should he win the award over a state champion varsity basketball team. I have no idea when the voting will end. I was told by KSAX that the results of the final round of voting (the top 10) would end on Friday, May 11.

Daniel Rooney is a moment away from grabbing the baton from his brother Patrick during the final hand off of the 4x100 relay race in Melrose on Thursday night. At left is Terrence Ellis of Sauk Centre. The Mainstreeters won the race with a time of 46.06 seconds, while the Jaguars came in second with a time of 46.94 seconds.

Up next for the Jaguar track and field teams: the Central Minnesota Conference championships next Tuesday at Holdingford beginning at 3:30pm.

Jaguar baseball sweeps Rockford in doubleheader

In game one of the Central Minnesota Conference doubleheader tonight, the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team defeated visiting Rockford 4-3. They went on to beat the Rockets by a wider margin in game two to improve to 9-7 overall on the season and 7-4 in the CMC. Up next for the squad is a trip to Eden Valley-Watkins next Tuesday.

Unfortunately for the Jaguars' chances in the CMC race, Maple Lake has kept on winning this week; they picked up an 8-5 win on Wednesday at Howard Lake and then beating Eden Valley-Watkins in game one of tonight's doubleheader 16-1 in five innings. If they beat EV-W in the nightcap, they will have clinched at least a share of the CMC crown. They are currently 9-1 in the CMC.

**Update...Maple Lake won the second game against EV-W 9-3 and clinched a share of the 2012 CMC baseball title. They are 10-1 in the CMC, while the Jaguars are in second place at 7-4.

**Another update...the Pierz Pioneers baseball team swept a doubleheader from HL-W-W last night and sits in second-place tie with B-B-E in the Central Minnesota Conference.

At Rockford in a doubleheader, the Jaguars fastpitch team lost 3-0 and 2-1 to fall to 3-13 overall. They host Eden Valley-Watkins (10-6, 7-6 CMC) next Monday at 4:00pm.

Monday night baseball results - Jaguars fall to Sauk Centre

In a makeup game from last Tuesday, the Jaguars baseball team lost 4-0 to the visiting Sauk Centre Mainstreeters tonight in Elrosa. The Mainstreeters are in the process of erasing memories of a disappointing 3-13 record from 2011, as they hold a 6-4 record at the midway point of this season while sitting in a three-way tie for first place in the West Central North Conference with Paynesville Area and Minnewaska Area.

Now 7-6 overall, the Jaguars host Pierz in a crucial Central Minnesota Conference game at 4:30pm tomorrow in Elrosa.

Just noticed this...Maple Lake is ranked #25 in the May 3 state baseball rankings in Class AA. Browerville (12-1) is ranked #3 in Class A. Eden Valley-Watkins is ranked #9 but will undoubtedly drop even further when this week's rankings are released on Thursday.

B-B-E boys' basketball team passes up Parkers Prairie girls' basketball team in KSAX Athlete of the Year voting

Earlier today, the B-B-E boys' basketball team passed up Parkers Prairie in the voting for "Athlete of the Year" by KSAX News based in Alexandria. Parkers Prairie had about a 100-vote lead as of 10:00am today, when B-B-E held 580 votes.

As of 3:00pm today, B-B-E has over 1,075 votes compared to 845 for Parkers Prairie. The Panthers girls' basketball team finished as Section 6A runners-up during their playoff run this past winter. They were Sub-Section 6A-South runners-up in 2011 and Section 6A champions in 2010. That year, they finished in third place at the Class A state tournament.

I just learned an important update from KSAX. On Tuesday (May 8), KSAX will close the current voting down and tally up the top 10 teams/individuals. A final poll will be released after that, with the public being able to vote from that list for the eventual "Athlete of the Year" award.

Voting for the final tally will end on Friday this week.

Smooth Magic 107 Coaches Roundup will begin with Coach Montbriand on Saturday morning...**Plus a note on voting for KSAX "player of the year" award

The broadcast will begin at around 7:20am on 107.1 FM or online at www.kmgk1071.com

I just saw this "tip" on Facebook. You can go to the KSAX website to vote for "player of the year" - my suggestion is to vote for the B-B-E boys' basketball team. Check it out at http://ksax.com/article/12519

As of Friday night, the Parkers Prairie girls' basketball team leads the field with 58 votes. The B-B-E boys' basketball team is in second place with 18 votes.

Parkers Prairie lost in the Section 6A championship game...definitely a great team but not worthy of that type of an award. With B-B-E winning the state title, they are more than deserving of this award.

Click and vote! And spread the word far and wide!

The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team holds a 5-3 record in the Central Minnesota Conference after splitting a double-header at Maple Lake tonight. They won the first game 6-5 before dropping the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings. Their next action is on Monday at 6:30pm in Elrosa for a border battle against Sauk Centre. The Mainstreeters moved above .500 (5-4) with a 5-0 shut out win at Albany (in Avon) tonight in a WCC-North match up. The Irish remain in first place in the CMC with a 6-1 league mark.

Don't miss the 10:00pm news tonight

The latest news on the Browerville hazing incident will be broadcast tonight on the 10:00 news. From what I've been hearing, it's gonna turn into a full-blown scandal. I'll be watching for that instead of adding updates from the track and field meet.

Track and field meet gets underway...and then the weather turned on us

Tyler Tensen takes the hand off from Jared Sorenson in the 4x800 relay race. Tensen ran the final leg, and the Jaguars took second place in that event.
The sky turned dark blue to the north of Belgrade as the track meet got underway today.
The Belgrade Lions Track and Field Invitational came to an abrupt halt as a severe storm system approached town and sent everyone indoors. The sky got dark and rain began to fall at 17:35 hours. According to the radar, pockets of "red" on the satellite images suggest that scattered severe thunderstorms will continue into the evening. A tornado watch has been in effect for the last two hours.

Update at 6pm...the storm got really bad as it tracked into Stearns County, with winds upwards of 70 miles per hour near Albany and severe hail by Avon being reported. Hail as large as golf balls (1 3/4") has broken out car windows in some areas by Albany according to a trained weather spotter. At 18:00, the buses left town and the track meet was called off. Also, the baseball game against Sauk Centre was canceled as well.

In the video clip, the track meet was "paused" and everyone was sent indoors...at 17:27...

Below is Long Jump action with Kinlee Swanson and Katelyn Heinze...

At Annandale today, the Jaguars boys' golf team placed fifth in the fourth Central Minnesota Conference meet of the year. Carl Knutson led the team with a 45. In the overall CMC standings, the Jaguars sit in third place with a 733, trailing Rockford (712) and first-place Osakis (702). A conference title is not out of reach for the Jaguars, but they will have to win the final three meets by substantial margins in order to pass up the current leaders. The next CMC meet is on the Jaguars' home course, Prairie View Community Golf, on May 11.
