Playoffs, Part II

The Elrosa Saints won the Stearns County League North division title today with a 7-3 win over Meire Grove. Region scheduling information will be posted later today. This is the program's 10th division playoff title in team history.

The Saints move to 14-13 overall with the win and now prepare for the Region 15C amateur baseball tournament that will be held in Paynesville over the next two weekends. Elrosa's first region contest is at either 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 6. I have to confirm the correct time and then post updates after the SCL Little Dipper championship game tonight.

In the County Line League playoffs, the Regal Eagles defeated the Starbuck Stars 9-1 on Saturday in an elimination contest. Earlier this afternoon (Sunday, July 31) the Eagles knocked out New London-Spicer from region contention with a 7-4 win. Currently they are facing Atwater in the CLL championship game. Both Regal and Atwater advance to regions.

State volleyball preseason polls

The B-B-E Jaguars volleyball team will enter the 2016 season with a No. 10 ranking in the preseason polls released by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association. Needless to say, expectations are high after the Jaguars had a very solid "off-season" and bring back key components of last year's squad that was upset in the sub-section semifinals.

The Jaguars haven't played in the state tournament since 2010. It is high time to change that!!!!

In Class 1A Bethlehem Academy is ranked number one, with Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at number two. Receiving votes in Class 1A are Wabasso, Legacy Christian, Minneota and Underwood. In Class 2A, Maple Lake is ranked number five.

Amateur division playoffs

The first final score is in the books for the opening day of the Stearns County League division playoffs.

In an SCL-North match up at New Munich, the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team won 2-0 to punch their ticket to the Region 15C baseball tournament.

Elrosa plays in a region seeding game (the SCL-North championship game) tomorrow (July 31) afternoon. The site is to-be-determined depending on who won the Meire Grove vs. Spring Hill game. If Spring Hill wins, then Elrosa plays at Spring Hill on Sunday. If Meire Grove wins, then Elrosa will host Meire Grove.

*UPDATE on Sunday night: this is exciting news for Saints fans! The Elrosa Saints will host the division championship game after Meire Grove upset the number-one seeded Spring Hill Chargers today. The Saints are the No. 3 seed, while the Grovers are the No. 4 seed. These two teams split in the regular season series. *****This division championship game in Elrosa will take place at 12 p.m. noon. So spread the word!

Stay tuned for updates. And don't forget about heading to Regal on Sunday night for the Little Dipper SCL championship game! Below is a short video clip from the semifinals last Sunday in Farming:

Amateur baseball

Kevin Kuefler watches ball four pass by as he batted in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was the only baserunner Elrosa got in that inning, as the Saints were held to just one hit through eight innings by New Munich starter Jim Thull.
In the final game of the regular amateur baseball season, the New Munich Silverstreaks traveled to Elrosa this afternoon and went home with a 2-0 win.

Spring Hill is gunning for their ninth win in the Stearns County League with a game at Farming today. They are 8-4 in the SCL-North division after squeaking out a 7-6 win at Chargers Field; they scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Today through five innings, Spring Hill held a 6-4 win over the Flames.
*Update: Spring Hill won 10-4 to finish the regular season with a 9-4 mark in the SCL-North. They win the division title alone. New Munich finished in third place with an 8-5 record, while the Elrosa Saints were third with a 7-6 mark.

Farming (10-2) is the SCL-South division champions, regardless of the outcome of today's game.

The B-B-E Jaguars 17-U fastpitch team lost 7-4 in a hard-fought contest at Osakis against Browerville in the West Central League playoffs on Thursday night. I have photos and video to post on Friday from the game. B-B-E was the No. 6 seed, while the Tigers were seeded No. 3.

From Osakis we made a quick trip down to Terrace to take in the musical. It was terrific! We then traveled north to Glenwood and spent time at the Pope County Fair as the sun was setting.

I have more to post at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website on Friday.

Never got around to posting this, but it's definitely worth sharing..the B-B-E Jaguars 14-U fastpitch team took second place in the West Central League, West division playoffs on Tuesday night. They made it to the finals, where they lost 2-1 to Alexandria.

County Line League baseball

The County Line League amateur baseball playoffs are underway, and the second weekend of action is coming soon. Here's what I know:

Norway Lake-Sunburg held a mid-game lead to Starbuck in the playoff opener but ended up losing 5-4 in the double-elimination bracket. The next game for the Lakers is at Regal on Saturday, July 23 at 5 p.m. against the Eagles. The loser is out, while the winner needs an additional win to advance to the Region 15C tournament.

Speaking of regions, this year's regional action will be held at the new stadium in Paynesville.

17-U fastpitch

(Above) 17-U head coach Gerald Schmitz provides instruction to Jade Freese during the June 30 home doubleheader against Osakis.

The B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch 17-U team has been seeded for the upcoming West Central League playoffs. I don't have all the rankings, but I know that the Jaguars open playoffs at Osakis on Thursday, July 21 at 5 p.m. The West Central League has an East and West division, and the league includes teams such as Browerville, Melrose, Sauk Centre, Royalton, Osakis and Minnewaska Area.

The Jaguars ended the regular season in style tonight with a doubleheader sweep at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. They defeated the Thunder 7-6 in game one and then 3-2 in game two.

Also, on Wednesday night this week the B-B-E Jaguars Legion team blew a late lead at Holdingford and lost their Melrose Sub-District playoff opener.

Glenwood Police Department

Posted today at the Glenwood (Minnesota) Police Department's Facebook page:

We've recently received several calls regarding suspicious persons and neighborhood disturbances involving people acting suspiciously by walking through citizens yards and standing on their properties during the late night and early morning hours. We've been able to associate this activity with the new Pokémon Go cell phone game.
We'd like to remind citizens that the above described suspicious activity is not normal. We're encouraged to see neighbors and citizens staying vigilant and reporting this activity.
We would also like to remind those partaking in this new game to be respectful and courteous and respect people's property rights. Walking through people's yards and standing on their property without permission is not acceptable.
We again are reminding citizens to report any and all suspicious activity by calling 911. The nice weather is bringing more people out and keeping them out later.

...my two cents: if your kid needs a cell phone app. to become physically active, you're doing it wrong.

Saints vs. Cubs

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team beat Greenwald 6-2 last night to improve to 5-4 in the Stearns County League North standings. Aaron Vogt started for Elrosa and went seven innings with outstanding pitching that scattered five hits with nine strikeouts. Next is a Battle for the Keg on Friday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Saints Field. Elrosa is one game out of first place, trailing front-runner New Munich (6-3).

I am about a month behind on everything here...now getting ready for tonight's Hymn Sing at the Brooten Community Church.

Here's video from the 17-U fastpitch game between our B-B-E Jaguars and the Osakis Silverstreaks on June 30:

The Jaguars came oh-so-close to an upset win over the talented Silverstreaks in a 2-1 loss in game one. Game two was not close.

While I have your attention I'd like to invite you (on behalf of the Terrace Mill Foundation) to their annual 4th of July Kids' Games and Family Picnic event on Monday starting at 5 p.m. (picnic)...the games will begin at 6:30 p.m. This is always a great event!
