Wrestlers thump A-C-GC

The packed B-B-E crowd was on their feet cheering wildly after Adam Jaeger won at 145 pounds.

The 15th-ranked B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team soundly defeated a very good Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons team tonight by a 39-21 score. The Falcons entered with an 11-7 overall record, while the Jaguars raised their record to 11-4 with the win.

The most exciting match of the night, one of many exciting matches actually, came at 145 pounds when No. 2-ranked Adam Jaeger (a junior) defeated No. 10-ranked Shane Whitcomb (a senior) 16-14 in overtime. The win was almost surreal, with the crowd going absolutely nuts in the third period as Jaeger climbed back from what was as bad as a 12-3 deficit. Jaeger entered the third period trailing 12-6. The score was 14-14 after the three regulation periods were complete.

Junior Leo Ziemer put an exclamation point on the win with a fall in 2:40 over Levi Schimschock at the heavyweight division.

Next for the Jaguars: a dual meet (part of what is actually a quad) at Royalton/Upsala on Thursday night. The Royals (12-11 overall) are having an excellent season and are a Section 5A opponent, so this match will count heavily towards postseason rankings.

In a home contest tonight, the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team lost 65-47 to Eden Valley-Watkins.

Eagles too tough for Jaguars

An incredible 17-point, 13-rebound performance by sophomore Macie Kirckof was not enough for the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team in their home game with Eden Valley-Watkins last night. The Jaguars trailed 32-17 at halftime and were unable to get closer than 12 points in the second half.

Kirckof was one of just two Jaguars in double figures. Hailey Braegelman had 10 points.

Final: EV-W 60, B-B-E 46. The Eagles are tough as nails this season. They recently defeated Watertown-Mayer out of the Wright County West Conference...W-M just defeated New London-Spicer last night by a 62-47 score in New London.

JAGUAR FANS! Come out tonight (Friday) to cheer on our B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team in their home game against Pierz. *And the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team will be at the NL-S tournament that begins at 3:30 p.m. I am really hoping to get to both events tonight.

Seniors/Parents night

The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team won 53-21 over Benson tonight in a home dual meet that was also Seniors/Parents night. Through 126 pounds, the Jaguars shot out to a 24-0 lead with pins from Blaine Fischer, Canon Swanson, Tyler Jensen and Tyler Bents. The wrestling team's next action is on Friday at the New London-Spicer invitational (3:30 p.m.).

At Howard-Lake-Waverly-Winsted, the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team lost a tough one 48-46. The Lakers had a 27-21 halftime lead.

At once-beaten Parkers Prairie, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team won in convincing fashion by a 45-24 score. The Panthers fall to 9-2, while the Jaguars are now 8-5. The 24 points is one of the best defensive performances in school history for B-B-E.

The schedule hasn't really let up around here. We put out a 12-page issue this week at the Voice and expect to do it again next week. I ask that everyone take the time to read my feature story on a Brooten woman who survived harrowing experiences in war-torn Europe in 1945-1946. It was one of the most difficult stories I've ever written. Her story includes many life lessons!!!

On Wednesday night this week, our news department will be covering a B-B-E "district goals" planning meeting for parents and community members. That begins at 6 p.m. at the high school. I plan on recording it on video, but not live streaming it. Stay tuned!

Ice cold

Bill Dean (left) and Don Leukam provided play-by-play coverage tonight at Kimball.

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team struggled all night in a 54-36 loss at Kimball Area tonight. They trailed 24-11 at halftime.

At Pierz, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team won 62-6 over Howard-Lake-Waverly-Winsted. In the second dual against the host Pioneers, the Jaguars lost 44-14 to get to 6-2 overall. Next is a Parents Night/Seniors Night home dual meet on Tuesday, January 17 against Benson, who is also a Section 5A team.

How is this for a very COOL piece of history! In this week's Bonanza Valley Voice that just hit the newsstands (Jan. 12 issue), I have a feature article on Mr. Wayne Schoeppach, who taught science from 1965 to 1992 at Belgrade, Belgrade-Elrosa and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa schools. For a brief period early in his career, he also taught shop (woods) and coached basketball. Tonight I learned that in his second year at Belgrade (1966-1967), Schoeppach coached Bill Dean in seventh grade basketball.

Bill Dean (Belgrade Class of 1972) was in Kimball tonight broadcasting the game with his trusty sidekick, Don Leukam.

Quite a night of basketball

B-B-E's defense forces Kimball's Katie Merchant to dish out from the lane tonight.

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team picked up their third win of the season in exciting fashion by a 76-68 score in overtime at Swanville tonight.

A career-high 23 points from junior guard Parker Schwinghammer led the way for the Jaguars to the win after they trailed 39-37 at halftime. He was one of four Jaguars in double figures (Ryan Olmscheid, Evan Wiener and Ryan Illies). Another key statistic was solid 75 percent free throw shooting (27-of-36) helping counter Swanville's huge 35-to-23 rebounding advantage and 12-of-18 performance at the charity stripe. This was a gutsy win for the Jaguars, who were playing a second game in a row without the services of leading scorer Derek Wiener.

Swanville falls to 0-5 with the loss, while the Jaguars are 3-6.

Up next: a road conference game at neighboring rival Paynesville Area toorrow night (Friday, January 6)...the Bulldogs are 0-8, but make no mistake, they will be tough to beat on their home floor.

At Kimball Area in a key Central Minnesota Conference game, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team fell 57-49 to the first-place Cubs. After trailing by three points at halftime, the Jaguars pulled ahead 30-27 on a close-range jumper by Hailey Braegelman just two minutes in. Kimball Area regained the lead and went up by 10 points with 10:33 on the clock. From there the Jaguars got no closer than five points.

Time to upload some video from Kimball and check out the area scoreboard!

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team won 72-40 over Paynesville Area. After a fairly ragged first half, the Jaguars settled down and expanded on their 33-20 halftime lead. The Bulldogs (0-7) got as close as 35-27 before the Jaguars dropped the hammer on them.
