Jaguars Girls Basketball Overwhelms A-C-GC in Sub-Section 6AA-East Quarterfinals 56-39, Advance to Face Top-Seeded Albany on Thursday at St.John's U
The Jaguars girls basketball team became the second-winningest team in B-B-E school history tonight by winning their sub-section opener over 5th-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (15-10). In the process, they also set a new school record for field goal percentage at 62% by going 24-of-39 from the floor against A-C-GC.
The Jaguars (18-9) advance to face state-ranked Albany on Thursday night at Sexton Arena in St.John's University. The Huskies (24-2) smoked Paynesville tonight by a score of 80-25 in another quarterfinal matchup.
According to the MSHSL website, our game would be at 6:30...the "early" game in the double-header at St.John's. That's what the brackets say online. However, it was announced after the game tonight that we would play against Albany at 8:00.
My gut says we play at 6:30.
The West Central Tribune reported on Wednesday that the game will be at 6:30 between our Jaguars and Albany.
Other scores from Section 6AA:
Benson 66, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 61
Minnewaska Area 66, Breckenridge 45
New London-Spicer 35, Melrose 31
Osakis 58, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 50
Sauk Centre 59, Holdingford 38
There were no upsets in Section 6AA, as all home teams won. The closest game was in New London, where the 2nd-seeded NL-S Wildcats had trouble getting past 7th-seeded Melrose Area, winning 35-31. It was the third meeting this season between those teams, as they both are members of the West Central North Conference.
Other girls basketball playoff scores:
Class AA - Section 5 Girls Basketball
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 69, Foley 50
Pierz 68, Zimmerman 57
Watertown-Mayer 70, Rockford 60
Also, our Jaguars boys basketball team lost to state-ranked Rockford tonight by a score of 87-63. They host Kimball Area on Friday night for Parents' Night. That will be a fun game and a great atmosphere to take in a high school event. I expect the student section to be large and loud as is usually the case with basketball games held at their "home turf"...the high school gym.
Back to our girls basketball team, their 18-9 record is the 2nd-best record ever at B-B-E. In 1992-1993 the Jaguars went 17-8 after winning a sub-section championship in the old Section 5A (2-class system). It was Michelle Marthaler-Perkins' first season as head coach of the girls basketball program at B-B-E. The school record is 20-7, set in 1994-1995, after they had a deep run to the Section 5A Final game, winning a school-record four playoff games in the process. That was B-B-E's first section championship berth in any sport since the 1988 pairing of the two former schools.
