The Jaguars boys basketball team hosts Maple Lake on Tuesday night. The Irish are 3-16 overall and 1-8 in the CMC. Then this Friday, the Jaguars travel to Rockford to face the 8-11 Rockets, who recently dipped below .500 with a four-game losing streak. Rockford is 4-4 in the CMC. I still look for them to be tough, and the Jaguars surely cannot afford a let-down as they work to keep the "loss total" at only one in the Central Minnesota Conference.
The Jaguars girls basketball team is idle until Thursday (Feb 19), when they travel to Kimball Area to face the 6-14 Cubs. That is their only action this week.
I believe I was incorrect last week when posting their record in the conference. After reviewing their schedule, I see that they are 9-2 in the CMC. This puts them into a tie for second place with Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted going into the final three league games of the season.
Last season, the Jaguars finished 9-5 in the CMC. That was their highest win total in a conference since 1994-1995.
The school record for girls basketball wins in a conference is 10. Teams of 1990-1991 and 1994-1995 both went 10-4 in the West Central South Conference. I may be missing teams in those years who also went 10-4, but I'll double check and post that when I find it out.
The Jaguars wrestling team opens Section 5A playoffs on Tuesday night. They travel to Eden Valley to face the fifth-seeded Minnewaska Area Lakers in a 6:00 dual match.
A handful of Jaguars wrestlers all have chances at making "state" when the Section 5A individual tournament rolls around on February 27-28 at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle high school. More on that will be written about after tomorrow's team action takes place.
In boys basketball notes, the Pierz Pioneers tagged the vaunted Braham Bombers with only their third loss of the season over the weekend. On Saturday night in Pierz, the Pioneers won 66-55 over the Bombers, who fell to 19-3 overall. Pierz improved to 13-5 overall, extending their winning streak to six. Their last loss was to the Jaguars, 66-61 back on January 29.
