Friday Night Lights VI: immense heart break

I'm still really jacked up on adrenaline, so this is kind of hard to process. Today was a GREAT day! Truthfully, every day is a GREAT day in America if you want my honest opinion. I may just write up the whole game tonight and get it over with. One less thing to do next week when I publish. Generally speaking, I don't know that much. But I am CERTAIN that our players and coaches are moving heaven and earth to get the ship right. It really felt all night like we were gonna get it done. The cosmos just worked against us.

The 30th annual Homecoming game for our B-B-E Jaguars football team will go down as one of the most entertaining football games ever played on that field, which dates back to the 1983 season. All night long, it felt like the Jaguars had this. They definitely wanted it. They gave it all they had.

Against New York Mills tonight in a Mid-State, Sub-District III contest, the Jaguars scored first on a 24-yard field goal by Giacomo Piombini with 2:08 left in the first quarter. That 3-0 lead stood until halftime.

The second half was truly wild. On so many levels. Each team suffered costly lost fumbles, but for B-B-E, the damage came at a high cost: the Eagle recovered a loose pig skin in the end zone to erase the 3-0 lead and go up 8-3 after the two-point conversion with 9:07 left in the fourth quarter.

Both teams traded touchdowns after that point, with B-B-E's 9-8 lead not holding to the final horn.

Final score: New York Mills 14, B-B-E 9. The Eagles improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Jaguars fall to 0-6. Next for the Jaguars is another home game, on Friday, October 12, when they host Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (5-1) on Parents Night. The Fighting Saints are 4-1 in Sub-District III in second place alone. Royalton is in first place at 5-0. Upsala/Swanville Area and Browerville are tied for third place at 3-2 each.
