Section 5A wrestling, basketball (UPDATES)


After 16:00 today I have been updating the end of this blog post with wrestling updates at Minnewaska Area...

The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team has six wrestlers who have earned spots in their respective Championship matches. This is very exciting news! Action continues all afternoon at Minnewaska Area High School. I am on the road battling technical issues but hope to get this updated shortly.

Competing after 3 p.m. in their championship matches are Ryan Jensen (132), Wyatt Engen (138), Hunter Laage (160), Maximus Hanson (170), Carson Gilbert (182) and Ethan Spanier (220). Laage earned one of the biggest upsets of the entire tournament when he defeated a Fier from Minneota in the semifinals by a 4-2 decision. Fier was the No. 2 seed in the bracket.

At heavyweight, Harley Weber (just a sophomore) nearly upset Hudson Scholten, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, before losing a tough 3-1 decision. He earned a pin (2:45) in his quarterfinal match to open his tournament. Weber and numerous other Jaguars will compete in the wrestlebacks that should all get rolling before 2 p.m.

More to come after 3 p.m. The girls' basketball team will tip off at about 2:13 p.m. at Eden Valley-Watkins in their varsity game. The JV team won their game against the Eagles, but the C-squad lost. First half update: with just under 12 minutes to go, the Jaguars hold a 9-0 lead at EV-W. The finals at wrestling should get going by about 3:15 p.m.!!!! More to come after 4 p.m.

**HALFTIME at EV-W: B-B-E 32, EV-W 26. FINAL: B-B-E 61, EV-W 57. The Jaguars take a 21-4 record into the postseason! They host a sub-section game on Thursday, March 2 with a 7 p.m. tipoff against an opponent to-be-determined.

By bracket...here are some updates...
At 106: Aiden Mueller will go for fifth place.
At 113: Noah Welte will go for fifth place.
At 120: Louie Tensen will go for third place. He earned a pin in his consolation round match!
At 132: Ryan Jensen will go for first place.
At 138: Wyatt Engen will go for first place.
At 145: Tanner Viessman won by fall in his final wrestleback match; he will go for third place.
At 152: Ethan Mueller will go for third place; he won a 13-10 decision in his last wrestleback match.
At 160: Hunter Laage will go for first place.
At 170: Maximus Hanson will go for first place.
At 182: Carson Gilbert will go for first place.
At 195: Talen Kampsen will go for fifth place.
At 220: Ethan Spanier will go for first place.
At 285: Harley Weber will go for third place.

At 106 pounds, Aiden Mueller finished in sixth place after losing a 10-5 decision in the fifth-place match.

At 113 pounds, Noah Welte lost a 13-5 major decision in the fifth-place match. He has had an outstanding season as a first-year varsity wrestler and takes a 19-28 overall record into the team state tournament.

At 120 pounds, Louie Tensen lost a 7-2 decision in the third-place match.

At 132 pounds, Ryan Jensen pinned (1:39) in his championship match for a state berth.

At 138 pounds, Wyatt Engen won a thriller by a 4-3 decision in his championship match to seal a state bid!

At 145 pounds, Tanner Viessman won a 6-4 decision in the finals to take third place.

At 152 pounds, Ethan Mueller lost by fall in his third-place match.

At 160 pounds, Hunter Laage lost a 17-0 tech fall to top-seeded Jevon Williams (35-3) of ACGC in the championship match; Laage has earned a state trip as there is no need for a true second match in his weight bracket.

At 170 pounds, Maximus Hanson won a 15-0 tech fall in his championship to seal his trip to state!

At 182 pounds, Carson Gilbert lost a tough 5-1 decision to Paynesville's Peyton Hemmesch in his championship. Gilbert does not need a true second match; he is off to state!

At 195 pounds, Talen Kampsen won by fall (1:50) in the fifth-place match. He had a terrific ending to the individual portion of his wrestling career and takes a 25-23 record into the team state tournament next week.

At 220 pounds, Ethan Spanier trails 5-1 going into the third period of his championship match to A-C-GC's Terrell Renne. Final: Renne 7, Spanier 2.

At 285 pounds, Harley Weber won by fall (0:52) in the third-place match. He does not get a shot at a true second match, however, and his sophomore season record is 29-18 going into the team state tournament.

The Class 1A individual state tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, at Xcel Energy Center. The state opener matches start after 9 a.m. on Friday.
