The home junior high track and field meet was cancelled due to the rain that passed over the area this afternoon. It actually rained off and on all day. For agriculture (and the environment in general), the rainfall was badly needed and greatly appreciated.
The fastpitch team did not play their games against Holdingford.
For the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team, they got one of their two games in against Holdingford at Dick Putz Field this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Huskers came out on top by a 10-3 score. Luke Illies took the loss on the mound after pitching the first 5 innings (8 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts). Tyler Myers pitched the 6th inning (3 hits, 2 earned runs, no walks, no strikeouts).
Today's game marked the successful return of senior Hayden Sobiech to varsity action. He went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one triple. He has not seen action since March of 2024 in the sub-section championship game at Minnewaska when he suffered his catasrophic knee injury. Welcome back, Hayden!
The Jaguars fall to 4-3 in the Central Minnesota Conference, while Holdingford improves to 5-2 (9-2 overall). Paynesville Area currently leads the CMC with a 6-1 record. I don't have any information on whether or not they are playing Kimball Area tonight in St. Cloud.
Overall, B-B-E is 4-4.
Here's a video from the top of the 6th inning one week ago tonight:
The game was still scoreless in the 6th inning against Royalton. Unfortunately, the Jaguars came up empty in the top of the 6th and ultimately lost 4-3.
More to come later tonight.
Some sad news to report...
Tonight, I received word that Jerry Huls has passed away. He taught and coached in the Brooten school district from 1979 through 1983. I've posted his funeral information at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website: https://shorturl.at/KwpuA. His mother, Margaret, lived to age 97 and passed away in 2015. She was a long-time elementary school teacher and retired from her career at Holdingford schools in 1982. Jerry's son Alex was a 2008 graduate of Pierz high school who was a two-sport Division II athlete at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
Fun fact: as Brooten's head wrestling coach, Jerry Huls earned a 42-6 team record with his Buccaneers. Brooten won 4 Prairie Conference titles in that span. Back during his high school days at Holdingford, Coach Huls earned a 127-24 career win-loss record in the 1970s, which is a remarkable figure for that era!
Another fun fact: Jerry's mom, Margaret, was in the 1967 graduation class from St. Cloud State University along with Mike Hurst, Brooten and B-B-E band teacher from 1970 through 2001. Mr. Hurst passed away on May 21, 2011 at the age of 66 after a courageous fight with cancer. Margaret Huls and Mike Hurst are listed back-to-back on the 1967 SCSU commencement program in the Bachelor of Science degree section.
