Around the area...fastpitch playoffs today:
In the Section 6AA fastpitch championship series, Kimball Area kept their season alive with an 8-5 win against top-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral. This forced a second game today at Miller Builder's Field in River's Edge Park in Waite Park. Unfortunately, St. Cloud Cathedral won the second game by a 10-4 score to win the section title and advance to the Class 2A state tournament. Kimball Area finishes a remarkable season with a 24-3 final record. The Crusaders head to state with a 23-2 record.
In Section 3AA...the fastpitch title for that section is on the line tonight in Marshall. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, champions of the West Central Conference, just defeated softball juggernaut Jackson County Central by a 2-1 score in 8 innings. This forces a winner-take-all contest that is also being played tonight in Marshall. Game two is starting at 7:16 p.m. The Schwans Regional Amateur Sports Complex has lights if needed! And that is a strong possibility. MA/CA won the coin toss, so they will be the home team for game two.
The MA/CA vs. JCC game is being aired on KMRS 1230 AM, which is also streamed online at https://streema.com/radios/KMRS. In game two, no runs have been scored through 1 1/2 innings. UPDATE: after 10 innings, the score of game 2 in Marshall is 2-2 between MA/CA and JCC. They have been playing under the lights for the past hour! Wild.
Update in Marshall late Thursday night: the Jackson County Central Huskies prevailed by a 7-2 score after 14 innings were in the book in game 2 of the Section 3AA fastpitch playoff series. They plated 5 runs on 4 hits in the top of the 14th. In the bottom of the 14th, JCC junior Hadley Wachal mowed down MA/CA's batters in order. She finished the game with 19 strikeouts. While they have been a juggernaut in the playoffs in recent years, this is JCC's first trip to state since 2005. They were Class 2A champions in both 2004 and 2005. MA/CA's last state tournament trip was as Morris Area back in the 1990s.
