Friday Night Lights Part I - B-B-E Jaguars Football wins in shut out fashion 13-0 at West Central Area in the 2010 opener

Senior Travis Westaby churned for five tough yards on this carry during the Jaguars' second touchdown drive of the game, coming in the fourth quarter. Also shown is junior Brady Weller laying out a nice block on a Knights' linebacker.

Head coach Chris Moscho and Brandon Roelike.

The Jaguars defense is shown swarming down on Knights quarterback Colton Blascyk in the first quarter, with Brandon Roelike (#22) making the tackle.

The B-B-E Jaguars football team was victorious in their 2010 season opener tonight, winning 13-0 over West Central Area in Barrett.

The Jaguars scored in the first and fourth quarters, earning the PAT the first time but having the kick blocked for the second trip in the endzone.

It marked the coaching debut for Chris Moscho, who became the B-B-E head football coach since the Dennis Weimerskirch era to pick up a win in his first game at the helm of the program. He is the fifth head coach overall for B-B-E football.

In 23 years of B-B-E football, this is only the seventh time that the Jaguars have won a season opener. (1988, 1990, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2010)

I also have to note that adding Principal Gossen to the coaching staff has to be one of the best things to happen at B-B-E in ages. He serves as the offensive coordinator and I will say he may be the best assistant coaches we've ever had for the Jaguars football team. I can't say enough about the play calling tonight - it was terrific.

The win also evened the season series between B-B-E and WCA in football at 2-2. In the two team's first-ever meeting in 2007, the Jaguars drubbed the Knights 33-8 in Belgrade. That season, the Jaguars actually knocked out the Knights' very talented senior quarterback Colton Lee and forced then-freshmen Colton Blascyk to take over the offense. Blascyk entered his senior year this time around, and while he had flashes of brilliance against the Jaguars, he was essentially held in check most of the game.

  • B-B-E vs. WCA football game recap:
The Jaguars scored in the first and fourth quarters, earning the PAT the first time but having the kick blocked for the second trip in the endzone. Junior Tucker Cebulla earned the first score on a 15-yard touchdown run, while senior receiver Kevin Kuefler grabbed a beautiful over-the-shoulder, fourth-quarter touchdown throw from senior Brady Koehler for the second score.

Defensively, the Jaguars did an excellent job stopping the run, holding WCA to 51 yards rushing on 28 carries. They were able to earn one fumble recovery by Tucker Cebulla, as well as a late interception by Kevin Kuefler - meanwhile, the Jaguars did not turn the ball over on their side. The Knights passed for 11-of-28 with 136 yards, with their passing game helping them earn 12 first downs in the game.

Senior Ben Borgerding led the Jaguars defense with 12 tackles, while junior Dillon Knutson earned a team-high two sacks. For the game, the Jaguars nabbed Colton Blascyk five times behind the line of scrimmage.

Read all about the game in next week's local papers (minus the Sauk Herald, which was published earlier today due to the Labor Day weekend).

Up next for the Jaguars: the home and CMC opener next Friday night against an 0-1 Holdingford team that was stung last night in a one-point loss, 21-20 to Holy Family Catholic in Holdingford.

Holy Family Catholic slipped past the Huskers by one point on Thursday 21-20, Thursday, after the two entered the fourth quarter tied at 14-14.

Holdingford defeated the Jaguars 58-20 last season in Holdingford.

Area football notes...in Pipestone tonight, Eden Valley-Watkins was successful in the coaching debut of Jon Thielen, who took over for legendary coach Ray Tri. Tri retired this past fall from coaching after leading the Eagles program for 26 seasons (the first 10 or so were awful and the final 11-12 were about as good as it gets, with countless conference titles and a state championship to boot.)

Further north in Long Prairie, the host LP-GE Thunder were not as successful, as they lost via shut out 32-0 to visiting neighboring rival Melrose Area. The Thunder have now lost 37 games in a row. They haven't won since Oct. 25, 2005! That is nothing less than amazing to have that level of futility. Keep in mind, in the 1990s B-B-E went through a very "rough patch" where they lost every game from the middle of the 1994 season through the end of the 1996 season - a span of 19 games. They turned it around in 1997, winning the season opener 15-7 at Kimball Area and then posting a 7-4 final record. I don't know what the answer is in LP-GE other than forming a new conference (recall my "Dairy Star Conference" idea including area teams)...they have a tough row to hoe in the West Central North Conference.

A look back at head coaching debuts in B-B-E football history...
In 1988, veteran head coach Dennis Weimerskirch took the very first B-B-E Jaguars football team up to high-powered state-ranked (Class C) Bertha-Hewitt and drubbed them 34-15 before getting smoked at Browerville 26-0 in Week 2. His team rebounded to win seven straight games before losing to Morris Area in the Section 4B semi-finals. Coach Weimerskirch was head coach of the Belgrade-Elrosa Redmen for 12 seasons up to 1988, the year they merged forces with the Brooten Buccaneers. "Weimer", as he was known around the area, finished with an outstanding 75% winning percentage in his coaching tenure.

In 1989, Bob Beliveau's B-B-E Jaguars were drubbed by Kimball in a year that the Jaguars lost their first seven games as new members of the West Central South Conference, finally winning the "Toilet Bowl" in New London with a 27-0 shut out over a terrible Wildcats team. In 1995 under first-year head coach Paul Beuning, the Jaguars lost to Kimball and went on to finish 0-8, the first of two straight winless seasons. Fast forward 10 years, first-year head coach Mike Richards was stung by a 21-19 loss to visiting Ogilvie in a game where penalties stopped a potential game-winning fourth quarter drive.
