Friday Night Lights VII: Jaguars name the score in Eden Valley

This EV-W defender missed...and Austin Kollman was on his way to a 17-yard run on the second play of B-B-E's second touchdown drive of the game. On the next play, Tommy Cebulla scored from 24 yards out to put the Jaguars up 13-0 with 6:24 left in the first quarter.
Brendon Loch delivered what could be the most punishing hit of the season so far when he drilled EV-W's ball carrier on this kickoff return after the Jaguars took a 41-0 lead with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

After building a 34-0 halftime lead, the B-B-E Jaguars football team put up a touchdown on their first series in the third quarter and went on to outscore the 2-6 Eagles 24-8 in the second half. They got off to a hot start tonight by driving down field on the game's first possession and taking a quick 7-0 lead thanks to a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brian Goodwin to David Rodgers with 8:49 on the clock in the first quarter. The scoring was closed out in the 4th quarter with a two-yard touchdown run by John Gjerstad to make the final score 54-8.

A few numbers: the Jaguars had 10 ball carriers tonight, with Austin Kollman leading the way with 108 rushing yards; the longest rush for B-B-E was good for 24 yards when Tommy Cebulla scored his team's 2nd touchdown of the night; the longest catch of the night was by Tanner Heinsius covering 66 yards with a touchdown to make the score 47-8; the Jaguars rushed for 197 yards and had another 293 yards through the air with 4 passing touchdowns (passing yards marked a season high); Billy Borgerding had one interception with a 14-yard return; Jackson Gregory had his team's lone quarterback sack; the team's total yardage of 490 is a season-high and one of the highest offensive totals ever earned by a B-B-E football team. It might rank 2nd all-time but I have to check my archives to confirm that. It's easily in the Top-5 for any B-B-E football team's offensive yardage.

The Jaguars finished the regular season as Central Minnesota Conference runners-up, holding second place alone with a record of 6-1. It is the first time ever that the Jaguars have been conference runners-up in football. Their 6-1 mark sets the record for most wins in conference play for any B-B-E football team. Great job!!

**UPDATE at 11:05pm: the Jaguars will host Kimball Area for the Section 4A quarterfinal playoff game next Tuesday, October 22 with a 7:00pm kickoff. The Cubs (0-8) were gunning for their first win of the season tonight against visiting Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, but they came up just short in a 34-32 loss. K-M-S lost to visiting Osakis tonight 52-6 to also finish 0-8 for the season. The Fighting Saints will have the last seed in Section 4A and travel to Minneapolis North to start the playoffs. That one is intriguing in the respect that K-M-S hosted North in last year's playoff opener in Murdock and won a pure shoot out 54-40 for their first playoff win since winning the Class A state title in 2008.

Back to the Jaguars...
In 1988, the Jaguars went 4-0 to earn sole possession of the Prairie Lakes Conference before joining the West Central South Conference in 1989. They also got to four conference wins in 2008 (4-3 finish) and in 2012 (4-3 finish). Every other football season at B-B-E resulted in 3 or fewer conference wins, a big reason why I am hyping up their 6-1 conference record this year.

Another first: until tonight, no B-B-E football team has won a game in Eden Valley. They were 0-2 at EV-W's field before they joined the CMC in 1999. From 1999 to 2011, the Jaguars went 0-7 at EV-W.

(I have to mention that EV-W is still a very young team..a year away from .500 or better. They take a 2-6 record into the Section 5AA playoffs)

Holdingford wrapped up the CMC title with a huge 42-0 win over visiting Rockford Area tonight. Pierz clinched third place with a win over Maple Lake.

Central Minnesota Conference football scores on Oct. 16:
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 34, Kimball Area 32
Pierz 23, Maple Lake 6
Holdingford 42, Rockford Area 0

2013 CMC football final standings:
1st) Holdingford 7-0
2nd) B-B-E 6-1
3rd) Pierz 4-3
4th tie) HL-W-W, Maple Lake, Rockford 3-4
7th) EV-W 2-5
8th) Kimball Area 0-7

Minneapolis North finished their regular season 6-2 overall with a 40-7 win over visiting Minneapolis Roosevelt in an afternoon game today. Ranked 8th in today's Class A state rankings by the A.P., the Polars will be the top-seeded team in Section 4A, while the #6-ranked Jaguars will be seeded number two.

My prediction for the Section 4A playoff seedings (with final regular season records):
1st) Minneapolis North 6-2
2nd) B-B-E 7-1
3rd) A-C-GC 6-2
4th) Mayer Lutheran 5-3
5th) LP/HT 5-3
6th) BL-H-S 2-6

7th) Kimball Area 0-8
8th) K-M-S 0-8

I don't have a K-M-S vs. Osakis score yet...my old cell phone that has the K-M-S A.D.'s cell # is flat out dead, won't start up even while plugged in and that's the only spot I have that #...dang it!! If K-M-S won (slim chance) they could move up to #7 in the section standings and become B-B-E's first-round playoff opponent. It is likely that we will entertain Kimball Area (0-8) next Tuesday to start the postseason. By the way, kickoff is at 7:00pm at our high school stadium. You better believe it that I am hoping for at least a thousand fans to come out for that game. That's right! If we can turn out 1,200 or more for a volleyball playoff game, we sure as tootin' can do it for a home football game!!!!

*Here's the third touchdown scored tonight...just seconds into the second quarter:
