B-B-E wrestling invitational endures a blizzard - ends up with a fifth place finish and 110 points, most since 2005 - Daniel Rooney wins 140-lb class

Austin Jaeger is moments away from earning a pin in the third-place match of the 125-pound division against a guy from West Central Area tonight. The fall was earned in 53 seconds.

The Jaguars wrestling team had a great showing on the home mats tonight, taking fifth place in a very tough 8-team field to open the 2010-2011 season. The Jaguars were able to fill all 14 weight classes. Junior Daniel Rooney was the lone champion for the Jaguars, as he won the 140-pound division with a 3-0 record and two pins. A nice feather in their cap was beating Class AAA Willmar in the final standings. Team scores were: New London-Spicer 271.5, Eden Valley-Watkins 168.0, Holdingford 113.5, Yellow Medicine East 112.0, B-B-E 110.0, Willmar 106.0, West Central Area 77.0, Browerville/Eagle Valley 21.0.

New London-Spicer won the tournament for the sixth straight year. They were rated #7 in the pre-season Class AA Guillotine poll.

For comparison purposes, in 2006 at this tournament, the Jaguars tallied 56 points while finishing seventh. In 2007, they took sixth place with 48 team points. Last year, they totaled 99 team points with a fifth place finish.

Back in 2005, a season in which they ended up with three state entrants (March 2006), the Jaguars took fourth place at this tournament with 127 team points. One of those state entrants that year, then-senior Danny Borgerding, is now an assistant varsity coach with the team.

Sophomore Austin Jaeger wins in wrestlebacks at the season-opening B-B-E wrestling invitational tonight. He finished in 3rd place in the 125-pound division.

Sophomore Patrick Rooney faced off with a Holdingford guy and pulls out a close win in the 160-pound division, in which he went 3-1 while taking third place.

The Jaguars wrestling team's next action is on Friday, December 10, in a home dual meet against non-conference MACCRAY/Renville County West.
