Day two in St. Cloud (UPDATES, VIDEO)
After 6 p.m. and I've finally settled back into the home office to get blogging updated and return to combing over game footage and game notes. It has been a wild two days with four varsity games under our belt! As of 6:30 p.m. I've got this blog post updated as much as I want to, and I will be posting in a new blog post with more video from today and yesterday. The new blog post goes up after 7 p.m...*TWO videos have been added below!
This is DAY TWO of the Granite City Classic! We are playing at St. Cloud Apollo high school now on a mild December day with full sunshine!
With 7 minutes left in the first half, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team is ahead 26 to 16 over South Ridge. South Ridge is a talented team that won over 20 games last year. I don't have a read on their personnel this year, but they held a 4-1 record coming into today.
The Panthers led 4-2 in the first two minutes as the Jaguars started to heat up. Harley Roering's three-pointer with 15:30 left put the Jaguars in front for good at 5-4. She hit a second three-pointer with 13:40 on the clock for a 9-4 lead. Abby Berge stole the ball on the press and scored with 13:13 left to make it 11-4. South Ridge got a layup to make it 12-6, but that was the closest they would get from there to the final buzzer.
B-B-E's scoring rampage continued with Roering's third three-pointer and then her paint shot. Berge scored on a layup, and Anna Jaeger canned a three on the left wing. Berge's three-point play then made the score 25-9 by the 10-minute mark.
South Ridge scored 7 straight points before Tiyana Schwinghammer scored on the left block. Roering's two free throws with 5:29 left the made it a 30-16 lead. The Jaguars later got back-to-back triples from Allie Dingmann and Schwinghammer for a 41-23 lead.
HALFTIME: B-B-E 43, South Ridge 26. The Panthers have been fairly effective on the three-point line, but the Jaguars have held strong at defending the paint with great interior defense.
Second half: B-B-E is ahead 73 to 41 with just over 8 minutes left.
Final: B-B-E 85, South Ridge 52. The Jaguars move back above .500 with a 3-2 record.
Final: B-B-E 85, South Ridge 52. The Jaguars move back above .500 with a 3-2 record.
After a second look, South Ridge has four seniors on the roster. One of their big guns is senior 5'6" guard Adella Olesiak, who knocked down a handful of threes in the game.
**And this is finally posted! Here's Coach Anderson talking about today's win and reflecting on what was a crazy December:
The boys' basketball team should be tipping off around 2:15 p.m. Stay tuned! I'm still trying to confirm if Cass Lake-Bena actually lost yesterday to unranked Northwoods...the score I saw was 89-59.
**In the first half, the boys' basketball team initially trailed 2-0, but after the Panthers cut down an 8-4 deficit to two points, the Jaguars went on an incredible 17-0 onslaught across a seven-minute span. With 7 minutes to go, they led 25-6.
*Here's a short video during a timeout around the niddle of the first half:
**Halftime in the boys' game: B-B-E 32, CL-B 25. The first half has been played at a frantic pace by both teams.
*With 8:58 left in the second half, the Panthers have cut the lead down to 47 to 45. B-B-E is in a full timeout. They need to regroup.
With 1:22 left the game is tied 56 all.
In overtime, the Panthers are ahead 67-62 with 55 seconds left.
Final: CL-B 67, B-B-E 64 OT.
