Story on the Cannon Falls Bears (Elrosa's 2nd-round opponent at State)

Amateur baseball: Godfrey sparks the Bears

Gaylord, Minn. — That Keith Meyers would stymie Brainerd in Sunday’s Class C state tournament opener is little surprise. The offense, however, was another story in Cannon Falls’ 2-1 victory.

Logan Godfrey, the Bears’ No. 9 hitter, singled in the game-winning run in the seventh inning.

It was made possible by Jake Winchell’s second sacrifice bunt of the game.

Brandon Underdahl, who also sank a hole-in-one on a 383-yard hole a few weeks back, put the Bears on the board early with a solo homer.

“We just kinda hung in there,” Meyers said. “Underdahl had a big home run and Logan Godfrey had the game-winning single. … The right people came up in the right situations.”

While the offense made the most of its limited opportunities — Cannon Falls finished with just six hits — Meyers made sure it was enough to get the win. He went the distance, scattering five hits and allowing one unearned run. The lefty also recorded eight strikeouts.

“If you play good defense and have good pitching, you’ll win a lot of games,” Meyers said.

The Bears advance to play Elrosa 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Gaylord. They play the second game of an all Classic Cannon Valley League day at the field. Hampton plays at 11 a.m., Miesville plays at 5 p.m. and Hastings plays the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
