Friday Night Lights Part II: Jaguars lose nailbiter at Kimball, Huskers shock Pioneers

The B-B-E Jaguars found their footing on the offensive side of the ball tonight. Better to achieve that in Week 2 than in the latter half of the season!

The B-B-E Jaguars football team lost 34-28. They had the game tied 28-28 in the fourth quarter. After trailing 28-14 at halftime, the Jaguars took control of the third quarter and outscored the Cubs by a 6-0 margin heading into the fourth. Down 28-20, the Jaguars tied it with a touchdown and two-point conversion. Helping their cause was a missed 17-yard field goal by the Cubs (from the left hash mark) in the third quarter.

The Jaguars definitely took a few steps forward tonight. Their line play, which was horrid against the Bulldogs last week, was cranked up a few notches tonight and played a big part in putting up 28 points. Giving up the kickoff return for a touchdown in the first half after Patrick Rooney scored a touchdown on a punt return ultimately led to their demise. I am a thousand percent confident in our coaching staff and the resiliency of our Jaguars; they will bounce back from this tough 0-2 start to the season.

The excitement shown in this video clip, after the Jaguars took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter...lasted all of 10 seconds of game time...the Cubs scored on the kickoff return that followed.

Fun facts: in 2004, Pierz started 0-2 including a 27-26 loss to Rockford in their CMC opener; the Pioneers then reeled off 12 straight wins to claim the Class AA title, topping it off with an enjoyable 39-14 win over Eden Valley-Watkins in the Prep Bowl.

The Minnewaska Lakers lost 35-0 to BOLD, so it could be worse! Minnewaska could go a second straight year without winning a football game. That last happened at B-B-E in the 1998 and 1999 seasons, and we fortunately will never return to those days. Though Minnewaska returned five starters on offense and seven on defense, the fact that they only have five seniors on the roster will undoubtedly be a factor hurting their chances at getting a win on the gridiron this fall. Their consolation is the fact that BOLD is ranked #7 in Class 2A and probably deserves that ranking. They have an outside shot at a 2-6 record, with poor Lac qui Parle Valley and Montevideo teams on their schedule.

Good grief...here's an example of just how good Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity is...they beat visiting Blooming Prairie, who was ranked #3 in the latest Class A football poll, by a 61-32 score tonight.
