Friday Night Lights Part VI: Jaguars win heart-stopping battle vs. Maple Lake

This PAT kick by Tommy Cebulla sailed through the uprights to make it 20-19 at the end of overtime.

It is cliche, but it's the whole truth: this game was not for the faint of heart!

After committing too many penalties in the last 3/4 of the game and getting outplayed at too many junctures of the second half of regulation, the Jaguars football team found their groove when they absolutely had to and outscored Maple Lake 7-6 in an overtime period today at St. Cloud State University.

The Jaguars took a 13-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Austin Kollman and a 5-yard touchdown run by Brian Goodwin. Goodwin's score was at 9:09 in the 2nd quarter.

Maple Lake got on the board first with a 91-yard kickoff return just seconds later, however, to make it 13-6.

Final score: B-B-E 20, Maple Lake 19. It will go down as one of the greatest football games I've ever seen at the high school level. It certainly is one of the most exciting football wins ever at B-B-E.

One of the game's biggest plays was the blocked field goal by Billy Borgerding with 2 seconds left in the fourth quarter. That would have ended the game with Maple Lake winning 16-13.

**Here's the blocked field goal!!! A miracle, considering how poorly the second half went for the Jaguars!

The Jaguars take over sole possession of second place in the Central Minnesota Conference at 4-1. These two teams were tied for second (3-1) coming into the game. Holdingford (6-0, 5-0) stayed on top with a blow out win over Kimball Area last night.

A beautiful sight on the scoreboard at Husky Stadium after the game today!

Up next is a tough, tough game on the home gridiron against Pierz (4-2, 3-2 CMC) next Friday.

Here's a little bit leading up to the kickoff:

It rained for a good part of the fourth quarter today, but other than that the weather conditions were just about perfect for the game. They remain on top of the Section 4A standings with the win! Their grip on first place is only because they have kept winning since losing to Holdingford. As strong as Section 4A is in the top-four, the Jaguars MUST beat Pierz to stay in the running for a #1 or #2 playoff seed.

Here's the second touchdown of the game, putting the Jaguars up 13-0 in the second quarter:

Coach Gossen's words at the end of the above clip rang true! "These are big points!" He couldn't have been more right. Of course, it turned out in B-B-E's favor in the end...just barely.

More coming later after 9:00pm tonight.
