B-B-E YES group attends fall gathering

On October 31, three B-B-E students plus Industrial Technology teacher Mr. Gjerstad attended a YES  “youth energy summit” opener at Prairie woods environmental learning center in Spicer.

The YES program is a team-oriented youth program for grades 7 through 12 that works on environmental or energy saving projects. While at Prairie woods Environmental Learning center the group learned about solar energy, waste reduction, composting, and teamwork. They also got to meet new people and learn what their school was trying to do to help the environment.  They then learned about what they could do to fundraise enough money to succeed at the project that they chose.

The project the B-B-E students are working on is a “Hydration Station” which is a water fountain that has a filter and a tall spout designed to fill water bottles. The system also counts how many water bottles we would save by reusing the same water bottle instead of throwing the plastic bottle away. Making and transporting plastic bottles takes energy that can be saved with this station. This also will help our community by reducing waste.
