Shaking that off, moving on at state: ROUND TWO (VIDEOS added**)
The state tournament map changes dramatically today after this first-round loss. It felt like we didn't know what we were up against. The Jaguars appeared lost at times out there. I am at a loss for words. That was a very, very disappointing outcome that will take awhile to process. The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team itself can't do that, as they have to move on in short order and prepare for the Class 1A state consolation semifinals, which will start at about 1:30 p.m. today. I haven't seen an updated bracket to determine who we wrestle.
Dover-Eyota moves on to face Central Minnesota Conference runner-up Royalton/Upsala in the semifinals. To this point of the season, Royalton/Upsala's only loss of the year has been to our Jaguars.
To get a third match today, the Jaguars have to win their next match. With a win this afternoon, the Jaguars would move on to the Class 1A consolation championship, which will be at 5 p.m today at Xcel Energy Center.
UPDATES:
The Jaguars face United North Central in this second round.
**Wyatt Engen won by fall to give the Jaguars a 16-12 lead after 132 pounds.
**Here's video featuring the end of the 138-pound match and the start of the 145-pound match:
Walker Bents won by pin at 138 pounds to give the Jaguars a 22-12 lead over the Warriors.
**After 145 pounds, the Jaguars have a 22-15 lead.
**In the semifinals, Royalton/Upsala and Dover-Eyota are tied 21-21 through 152 pounds. Also, WCA/A/BE is giving Jackson County Central all they can handle and the other semifinal. Through 152 pounds, that one is tied 18-18. Crazy.
*Update against UNC: the Jaguars have a 27-18 lead after Evan Young won a 15-0 tech fall at 160 pounds.
**Here's video from Evan Young's 160-pound match:
Update: Royalton/Upsala has a 28-27 lead after 182 pounds, which Dover-Eyota won by fall. Update: Dover-Eyota won by fall at 195 to take a 33-28 lead!
**Here's a video featuring the final part of the second period at 132 pound against UNC, with Wyatt Engen building a big lead at 132 pounds:
Final score: United North Central 34, B-B-E 30. The heavyweight match went to UNC by injury default to upend B-B-E's 30-28 lead. The Warriors (22-9) won a decision at 220 pounds. The team season is a wrap. This was another rough performance to take in. The Jaguars looked lost on that mat. I can't say the loss was from a lack of effort or desire. I didn't see the fire in their eyes like I usually have this season. This season-ending loss was to a team that got hammered by Jackson County Central by a 52-9 score earlier today.
Kimball Area defeated Maple River/USC in the other consolation semifinal to advance to the fifth-place match, where they'll take on UNC at 5 p.m. today at the X.
