Individual state wrestling

At the state high school individual wrestling tournament, the first round of action is not quite yet complete.

At 132, Ryan Jensen (40-3) won by fall (1:23) against Fosston/Bagley's Aiden Wolfe.

At 138, Wyatt Engen (36-6) also won by fall (5:05) with a win over Medford's Evan Schweisthal.

At 160, Hunter Laage (22-25) lost by fall (3:32) to Dover-Eyota's Gavin Gust.

At 170, Maximus Hanson (45-1) won a 9-2 decision over Luverne's Sam Rock.

At 182, Carson Gilbert (28-13) lost a 5-3 decision to Chatfield's Kail Schott.

At 220, Ethan Spanier has not wrestled as of 1:30 p.m. We wait for more results from the X. UPDATE: Spanier won an 8-6 decision in his opener against Minneapolis North's Cashmere Hamilton-Grunau.

And by the way...tip-off for the girls' basketball playoff game is at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Wadena. 

UPDATE on Friday night: Jensen lost in the quarterfinals in a tough 4-3 sudden-victory overtime decision. Engen also lost a tough sudden-victory decision by a 4-2 score in his quarterfinal match.

Hanson won! In the quarters...he won a 9-3 decision to land a spot in tomorrow's state semis! And Spanier won by fall (2:27) in his quarterfinal match! Awesome!!!

Gilbert gets a shot in the consolation bracket. Laage also gets a shot in consolation.

Halftime: B-B-E 34, Hancock 28. The Owls came to play and challenged the Jaguars early. With 10:25 to go, the Owls led 15-14.

**The Jaguars won, I don't have the final score at present. I am taking the rest of the night off!!!  (The Jaguars won 76-59.)

I am going to fully admit how difficult it was for me to see our wrestlers lose that third-place match last night. It was a gut punch. They worked so hard to get to that Final Four, and they were so close to achieving a season that ended on a win. It was just not meant to be. I can't explain it. How they handled themselves after that loss was a sight. They were true statesmen. That is a very, very tough thing to pull off in that moment.
