Some fun Belgrade Redmen history

Here's part of a story that just could not fit into print, for a story that will be published this week. This part begins with mention of the newly-paired Belgrade and Brooten track and field teams in the spring of 1982.

In 1983, the B/B girls' team won the Prairie Conference and District 20 titles while also earning the runner-up trophy in Region 5. Over the next three years, the B/B girls' team continued winning conference titles while climbing the ranks at the state meet. They took 10th at state in 1984, sixth at state in 1985 and then won the Class 1A title in 1986.

Redmen volleyball went undefeated all the way to the state semifinals in 1984, where they lost to Concordia Academy. Belgrade finished 25-1 while earning third place. Two years later they earned the program's third District 20 title.

Belgrade wrestling had its share of state qualifiers beginning with Ron Weller in 1972 when Minnesota had just one class. Other state entrants included Brian Weller, Jon Anderson, Marlyn Marquardt, Kevin Weller, Randy Larson (state runner-up) and Gregg Weller. (Records for the 1988 season were unavailable.)

One of the highest points for the Belgrade athletic program came under the head coaching of the late Dennis Weimerskirch, who led the program from 1988 through the pairing in 1988-1989.
