State wrestling tournament, basketball playoff updates
I'm taking a break again from work, so there won't be much added here until closer to 8 p.m.
At the Class 1A state wrestling tournament...
Dover-Eyota had a 28-21 lead through 160 pounds against West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville. The Knights then won by tech fall at 170 and decision at 182 to go ahead 29-28. Dover-Eyota won a decision at 195 to give themselves a 31-28 lead.
The WCA/A/BE Knights grabbed the third-place trophy with back-to-back decisions at 220 and 285 to win 35-31. The scores were 7-4 and 5-2 at those two weights. It was a thrilling ending to WCA/A/BE's season.
In the fifth-place match, Kimball Area won 41-24 over United North Central. The Warriors (22-10) led 24-18 after 160 pounds, but the Cubs swept the remaining matches to score the last 23 points and take the consolation title.
Jackson County Central and Royalton/Upsala face off at 7 p.m. in the state title dual. **Update: with 13 of the 14 weights completed, the JCC Huskies hold a 45-17 lead over Royalton/Upsala. Final score: JCC 45, Royalton/Upsala 23. For the second year in a row, Royalton/Upsala finished as Class 1A state runners-up.
Our B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team begins the playoffs tonight with a home game at 7 p.m. in Belgrade. They face No. 9-seeded Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. Updates to follow in a new blog post (for basketball).
