Elrosa Saints Win Stearns County North playoff title, boosted by Olmscheid's Grand Slam in Eighth Inning

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team won the Stearns County North playoff title with a 7-1 win over Spring Hill on the Charger's diamond today. In the top of the eighth inning, Jonathan Olmscheid's two-out grand slam shot into the trees behind the
center field fence broke a 1-1 stalemate and lifted the Saints to victory.

The Saints will now have first dibs at calling for drafts from the three Stearns County North teams who did not make the region tournament.

The Saints next play the Stearns County South runner-up, Lake Henry, in the opening round of the Region 15C tournament. The game will be played on Saturday (August 4) at 1:00pm. Lake Henry is the host of the 2007 Region 15C tournament. The Lakers were blanked at St.Martin by a 9-0 score today, as the Martins won the Stearns County South playoff title.

Around the area in playoff action:
New London-Spicer won the Cornbelt League North playoff title with a 10-3 win over Starbuck on Sunday afternoon at the Green Lake Diamonds. The Twins (14-6) and the Stars (10-14) both advance to the Region 15C Tournament. The loss capped a three-game weekend for Starbuck, which beat Regal 4-3 Saturday and Norway Lake-Sunburg 5-1 earlier Sunday.

Bombers are Rained Out at Kimball -- Game Will Not be Made Up

The rain poured like crazy at Kimball (missing the Belgrade area almost entirely, of course).

What I've found out: The Bombers are in the Division II, District Six Final Four or Final Eight. Cold Spring and Kimball are two of the other teams that have advanced that far. I am not sure if we have four or eight teams still standing, looking for a trip to the American Legion state tournament. It is a double-elimination tournament, so we will have two games on Thursday, August 2. The first will be at 10:00am in Regal, and the second will be at 3:00pm (location to be announced).

From the West Central Tribune, Friday edition:

BBE-Kimball washed out

Rain Thursday postponed the District 6, Division II Melrose Sub-District Legion baseball final in Kimball between Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Kimball. The game will not be made up and both teams advanced to next week’s district tournament.

BBE will play its first-round game next Thursday at 10 a.m. in Regal while Kimball will play in Paynesville.

Elrosa Saints Advance to Regions! Earn a 3-0 Blanking of New Munich in the Stearns County North Division playoffs

The Elrosa Saints won 3-0 tonight at Eden Valley Hawk Field. It was the deciding game in the Stearns County League best-of-three divisional playoffs.

Also, St.Martin defeated Roscoe in their deciding game of the divisionals by an 8-3 score in eight innings at the Cold Spring diamond.

The Saints play at Spring Hill on Sunday (July 29) at 1:30pm in the region seeding game. The Chargers were the Stearns County North's top seed after regular season play. Lake Henry will play at St.Martin for the other Stearns County League seeding game. All four teams qualify for the Region 15C tournament, held August 4-5/11-12 at the Lake Henry diamond. The games on Sunday have big implications as far as who gets the best drafts before entering the region tournament.

The Stearns County League teams appreciate your support. See you at the Spring Hill diamond on Sunday.

B-B-E Bombers Legion Baseball Team Bombs Top-Seeded Sauk Centre 10-7 in District Opener

A three-RBI home run by Jared Waller in the top of the eighth, along with a spectacular center field pop fly grab by Josh Beier for the third out in the bottom of the eighth, led the B-B-E American Legion team to a memorable 10-7 win over their neighbors to the north. The game was held tonight at the Sauk Centre high school field, as they were the number one seed in the north sub-district.

The Bombers now move on to play second-seeded Browerville in the sub-district semi-finals. The game will be at 6:30 on Wednesday night at Jack Dressen Sports Complex in Browerville. A win over Browerville would put B-B-E in the double-elimination part of the tournament, the Division II, District 6 Final Four.

Legion Post 288 Wins On the Road, 9-5 Over Kimball

The B-B-E Bombers Legion team won on the road at Kimball in a league game to raise their record to 5-1 this season. They have makeup games on Wednesday and Friday nights this week. The Wednesday game is at Elrosa at 8:15 against Browerville. Coincidentally, one of the Bombers coaches, Matt Middendorf, will begin his prep teaching/coaching career at Browerville this fall.

On Thursday, July 12 they host Sauk Centre at 8:00 in Elrosa. Please note the time change for that game. The coaches wanted to get some games for the kids "under the lights." That will be a fun game against a team that our local players are familiar with.

B-B-E Legion Baseball Team is 4-1... Up next, Thursday July 12 against Sauk Centre in Elrosa

The B-B-E Legion Post 228 team is 4-1 so far this season, winning their most recent outing in a home game against St.Joseph Post 328 last week. The final score was 10-9 in regular innings. Their home games are played at Saints Field in Elrosa.

The next home game for the Bombers is a much-anticipated matchup with neighboring rival Sauk Centre, on Thursday, July 12, at 6:00. They also travel to Upsala-Swanville on Monday night, with the game held in Swanville.

The Legion team is made up of mostly 10th-12th graders from the previous school year, basically the 2007 Jaguars varsity baseball team. They are coached by Matt Middendorf and Matt Bauer, two key members of the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team.

In local amateur baseball action, the Elrosa Saints town team beat Greenwald 11-4 last night (Friday) to finish 9-4 in the Stearns County League North, good for a first-place tie with Spring Hill. Up next for the Saints is an exhibition game on Wednesday night at St.Cloud's Joe Faber Field at 7:30, against St.Cloud Orthopedic Ice (11-11 overall). They then shift their focus to a home game to open the north division playoffs, on Sunday, July 15 at 1:30. New Munich (7-6 Stearns County North) will be the opponent.

The division playoffs is a best-of-three series. The higher seed hosts the first game, followed by a trip to their opponent's home field on July 22. A potential third game would be played at a neutral site the following Monday (July 23). The top two teams in the north and south halves of the Stearns County League advance to 'seeding' games for the Region 15C tournament, which will be held in Lake Henry this year in the first two weekends of August.
