Jaguars Girls Basketball story from last week

Jaguars girls basketball has 3-0 week

Getting hot at the right time with playoffs looming on the horizon, the B-B-E Jaguars girls basketball team swept all three opponents last week, picking up two close wins in Central Minnesota Conference action over Pierz and Eden Valley-Watkins.

This week the Jaguars (5-6 CMC, 9-14) host Rockford on Tuesday night, Maple Lake on Thursday, and Kimball Area on Friday to cap the regular season.

Sub-Section 6A-South playoffs begin on March 1 with the play-in round. Quarterfinal action begins on March 4.

  • B-B-E 50, Osakis 29

After building a 30-19 halftime lead, the Jaguars went up 38-21 with a Julie Hieserich three-pointer and then 46-25 on a paint shot from Rachel Anderson to run away with the game at Osakis (7-15). Anderson's double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds led a balanced attack, with eight Jaguars scoring on the night.

B-B-E scoring: Julie Hieserich 8 (5 assists), Maggie Gruber 4, Ashley Kirckof 3, Raeann Sorenson 5 (5 assists), Lauren Anderson 9 (12 reb), Rachel Anderson 17 (11 reb), Shannon Gruber 2, Shyan Kuefler 2.

  • B-B-E 52, Pierz 44

A strong night on the boards, combined with 22-of-33 free throw shooting, helped the Jaguars return from Pierz with a much-needed win. Julie Hieserich's 15 points and two three-pointers led the attack, as the Jaguars led by double digits at the break, up 29-18.

B-B-E scoring: Hieserich 15, M. Gruber 8, Sorenson 4, L. Anderson 10, R. Anderson 9 (8 reb), S. Gruber 4, Kuefler 2.

  • B-B-E 34, Eden Valley-Watkins 30

In a tight ball game that stood at a 9-9 deadlock at halftime, the Jaguars pulled ahead with three minutes left on two Raeann Sorenson free throws. The sophomore guard made her final seven free throws and went 9-of-10 from the line in the game,
as she led the Jaguars with 13 points.

The other Jaguar scoring in double figures, Lauren Anderson, posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, they held the Eagles (7-5 CMC, 9-12) to
10-of-54 shooting from the floor.

B-B-E scoring: Hieserich 1, M. Gruber 2, Kirckof 3, Sorenson 13, L. Anderson 11 (11 reb), R. Anderson 2 (10 reb), Kuefler 2.

**Playoff notes:
The Jaguars host 9th-seeded Hillcrest Lutheran Academy of Fergus Falls on Monday night, March 1, at 7:00pm. The Comets got blown away in their regular season finale when they traveled to Wheaton on Tuesday, February 23, and went home as 58-30 losers to the Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Warriors.

The Comets finished 3-9 in the Little Eight Conference, good for 6th place in the seven-team league.

Here's a story about their loss at Wheaton: http://www.craigolsonsports.com/newsarticle.php?yid=0910&tid=171&sid=1230171&nid=36349

Jaguars Wrestling is back at State for the second straight year as seniors Cole Tensen and Travis Winter win Section 5A titles today

Senior Cole Tensen in action during the 145-pound championship match.

Senior Travis Winter in action during the 160-pound championship match.

In a very exciting and action-packed Section 5A individual wrestling tournament, the Jaguars wrestling team put eight grapplers in the Finals Round, with two emerging as section champions.

At 145 pounds, senior Cole Tensen won the championship match in a 9-4 decision.

At 160 pounds, senior Travis Winter won the championship match with a very intense 4-3 win.

Other placewinners for the Jaguars: Ross Rath, 3rd place at 103. Tyler Tensen, 6th place at 112. Brent Goodenbour, 3rd place at 135. Patrick Rooney, 4th place at 140. Dillon Knutson, 5th place at 152.

Ben Borgerding wrestled in the 5th place match, but I left before it was completed.
**Borgerding won the fifth place match by a 7-6 score over Mitch Zastrow of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. His winning finish in the 171-pound division of the Section 5A tournament was a great way to cap his junior season.

All in all, it was a very good weekend on the mats for the Jaguars.

**Update on State Tournament info for the Jaguars, which opens on Wednesday night, March 3, at 8:00pm at the Xcel Energy Center in St.Paul...

Tensen (33-3) opens the State Tournament facing Pipestone Area's Jadon Evans (26-11), a junior who was the runner-up in the Section 3A tournament 145-pound division.

Winter (35-2) opens the State Tournament facing United South Central's Dylan Thisius (32-6), a senior who was runner-up in the Section 2A tournament 160-pound division.

Jaguars Girls Basketball posts second straight win to cap the regular season, defeats Kimball Area 46-40

Just what the doctor ordered, two straight wins to end the regular season and gain some confidence as Sub-Section 6A-South playoffs approach. The Jaguars girls basketball team defeated visiting Kimball Area 46-40 on Friday night to end the regular season 11-15 overall and 7-7 (4th) in the Central Minnesota Conference.

The Jaguars were led by sophomore forward Shyan Kuefler's 11 points, while as a team, they out-rebounded the Cubs by a 33-20 margin. Senior center Lauren Anderson was the other Jaguar in double figures, tallying 10 points and eight rebounds.

Kimball didn't help their cause, shooting only 1-of-9 from the charity stripe.

The Cubs enter Section 5AA action with a 12-12 overall record; they went 4-10 in CMC play, tied with Pierz for 6th place. Kimball actually received the #3 seed in Sub-Section 5AA-North - it's got a pretty bad bunch of teams in the bottom half. Maple Lake, who finished dead last in the CMC and is only 5-19 overall, will actually have a home playoff game to start 5AA playoffs as the #4 seed. The Irish will host #5-seed Zimmerman, who went 3-22 in the regular season and actually defeated Maple Lake back on December 15 (however, that was the last time Zimmerman won, they are on a 20-game slide!).

Eden Valley-Watkins, just 10-14 overall, is the #2 seed in 5AA-North. They finished 8-6 in the CMC, good for 3rd place alone. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 22-4 overall, went 14-0 in the CMC for their first conference championship; they are the #1 seed in 5AA-South.

Central Minnesota Conference girls basketball results:
@ Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 71, Holdingford 63
Eden Valley-Watkins 41, @ Maple Lake 10
Rockford 70, @ Pierz 40

Final Central Minnesota Conference girls basketball standings:

6 - Kimball Area (4-10)
6 - Pierz (4-10)
8 - Maple Lake (1-13)

**On Saturday night this weekend, the Jaguars boys basketball team hosts 5-14 Parkers Prairie in a sub-section game at 3:00pm. The Varsity game is set to begin at about 4:30. The Panthers are 4-8 in the Little Eight Conference, good for 6th place in the 7-team league.

Jaguars boys basketball blow away another Central Minnesota Conference team, beating Pierz 73-52 on the road - Girls basketball drubs Maple Lake 54-32

Rachel Anderson (#20) led the Jaguars on the boards tonight against Maple Lake, hauling in nine rebounds. Lauren Anderson (#14), shown flanking Kimball's Amanda Wittenberg in a January 26th game, led the Jaguars in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds against Maple Lake tonight. They entertain Kimball on Friday night this week, looking to cap a series sweep over the Cubs.

The Jaguars girls basketball team won its 10th game of the season while improving to 6-7 in the Central Minnesota Conference with a 54-32 win over the visiting Maple Lake Irish.

Senior center Lauren Anderson led the Jaguars with 14 points and eight rebounds. She scored 10 of the team's first 16 points of the game, all on field goals, as the Jaguars jumped in front 16-6 with Anderson's strong play down low.

Maple Lake falls to 1-12 in the Central Minnesota Conference and 5-18 overall.

The Jaguars girls host Kimball Area on Friday night in the final game of the regular season. They look to cap a series sweep over the Cubs; they defeated Kimball 69-58 on January 26. Kimball Area just defeated Pierz 58-43 on Tuesday night, snapping a five-game losing streak to bring their overall record to 12-11 (4-9 CMC).

A final score out of Pierz tonight: B-B-E 73, Pierz 52. It is the biggest margin of victory that a B-B-E boys basketball team has ever had at Pierz.

Not only that, but the win marks the second 20+ win season in a row for the Jaguars, and the fourth overall in B-B-E school history. The 2001-2002 squad finished 21-3 before playoffs, the 2002-2003 squad was 20-5 before playoffs, and last year's team was 22-4 going into Sub-Section 6AA-East play.

Most impressive in tonight's win was that they trailed 33-31 at halftime and then proceeded to punish the Pioneers in the second half, outscoring their hosts by a 42-19 margin. Five Jaguars scored nine or more points, led by Kevin Kuefler's 20 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.

**In a colossal upset tonight in Sauk Centre, the host Mainstreeters girls basketball team lost their second straight game, falling to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 45-29.

Clips from the Jaguars boys basketball's 88-72 win at Paynesville Area

Coming later this week...my first "Blast from the past" commentary where I'll reminisce from noteworthy Jaguars boys basketball games from years gone by. I'll highlight an ugly 80-76 double-overtime loss that the Jaguars suffered at Paynesville in late February of 2002.

These Jaguars sports video clips brought to you by:

Hot off the press - Sub-Section 6A-South girls basketball seedings, Jaguars are ranked #8 in the 11-team group

Below are the seedings.

New York Mills is the #1 seed in Sub-Section 6A-North.

More info will be posted later tonight.

The Jaguars girls basketball team will host #9-seeded Hillcrest Lutheran Academy of Fergus Falls in a play-in game on Monday, March 1 at 7:00pm at the B-B-E High School. If they win, they will face #1-seeded and state-ranked Parkers Prairie in Parkers Prairie on Thursday, March 4.

My 2 cents: The Jaguars really got the SHAFT at seeding time. I don't have many good things to say about Little Eight Conference coaches right now! They certainly deserved a #7 seed, ahead of Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.

Hillcrest Lutheran Academy is 9-15 overall and 3-9 in the Little Eight Conference, good for 6th place in the 7-team league.

1 - Parkers Prairie

2 - Brandon/Evansville

3- Hancock

4 - Battle Lake

5 - Underwood

6 - Ashby

7 - Wheaton/Herman-Norcross

8 - B-B-E

9 - Hillcrest Lutheran Academy (Fergus Falls)

10 - Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley

11 - Henning

Both basketball teams lead by 4 at halftime tonight - Jaguars girls are stung by one-point loss to Rockford while Boys throttle Paynesville 88-72

B-B-E's Matt Goodwin and Brent Koehler collide with Paynesville's Matt Frenchick while going for a rebound under the Bulldogs' basket in a wild first half. It was a typical "border battle" where the records could be discarded at tip-off.

Kevin Kuefler stops in the lane for a shot attempt at Paynesville tonight, in a game won by the Jaguars 88-72.

The Jaguars girls basketball team took on the mantle of "heartbreak kids" tonight when they fell in a home game to Rockford by a 56-55 score in a Central Minnesota Conference game. The Jaguars are now 9-15 overall and 5-7 in the CMC going into the final two games of the regular season.

At halftime, the Rockets led 35-31. The Jaguars kept within striking distance in the second half, finally pulling ahead with 90 seconds left by a 55-54 margin on a field goal from Ashley Kirckof. With 14 seconds on the clock they missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity at the free throw line. On the missed free throw, a Rockets player was fouled on the rebound attempt to bring a bonus shooting opportunity for Rockford. She promptly sank both shots to give her team a come-from-behind win to make the 78-mile trip back down Highway 55 much easier.

Rockford's girls basketball team improves to 18-7 overall and 10-3 in the Central Minnesota Conference. They have 2nd place in the CMC locked up behind champion Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.

The Jaguars girls basketball teams's next game is on Thursday night at home against Maple Lake. That game will be aired on 106.5 FM The Train.

The Jaguars boys basketball team led 44-40 at halftime at Paynesville in a non-conference game. After going up 21-14 with 10:00 left in the first half, the Jaguars fell into a lull on both ends of the court, letting Paynesville take a 24-22 lead at the 7:38 mark with a three-point shot.

After Kevin Kuefler's two free throws tied the game, consecutive shots by Bennett Weller in the paint and beyond the three-point line put the Jaguars up 29-24 at the 5:40 mark. They didn't let up there, as shots in the paint from Connor Goodwin and Kuefler capped an 11-0 run for the Jaguars.

Ultimately, the Jaguars throttled the Bulldogs in a high-scoring affair, winning 88-72 at the final buzzer. They drained 6 three-pointers in the second half (10 overall) in which they outscored the Bulldogs 44-32. Five of the seven Jaguars who scored hit double figures.

An offense that puts 44 points on the board in each half of a basketball game will put a pile of "W's in the win/loss column.

Paynesville Area entered the game with a lowly 5-13 record, but they made the Jaguars work in the first half. It was a usual battle between the neighboring rivals, something that's expected when the two meet regardless of either team's record.

An online photo gallery at the Sauk Centre Herald website of pictures from the first half of the Paynesville vs. B-B-E boys basketball game can be found at the following URL: http://saukherald.mycapture.com/mycapture/index.asp

The Jaguars boys basketball team's next game is at Pierz this Thursday night, where they take on a dangerous 5-18 Pioneers team that has the ability to pull off an upset. They need two more conference wins to clinch a share of the CMC title.

In a game at "Fort Knox" in New London, the New London-Spicer Wildcats girls basketball team knocked off #1 Class AA-ranked Sauk Centre 45-41. The Wildcats led 29-21 at halftime, saw the lead shrink to 29-28, then pulled away for a period before the Mainstreeters came storming back. It was too little, too late, though, as the Wildcats hung on for the close win.

B-B-E boys basketball story from last week

Junior guard Bennett Weller drained 17 points against Rockford on February 11. He also nailed four three-pointers during the Jaguars' 91-59 win over Ashby last Thursday night.

In a pure shootout at Rockford on February 11, the Jaguars boys basketball team made the most of their lone game of the week by hammering the Rockets in a Central Minnesota Conference clash. With their high-octane offense running at full strength, junior Kevin Kuefler's 28 points led the Jaguars to a 90-76 win.

Last week the Jaguars (18-3, 10-1 CMC) whipped Kimball Area 84-53 and Ashby 91-59.

Their non-conference game at Paynesville Area (4-9 West Central North, 5-12) is re-scheduled for this week Tuesday, February 23. They travel to Pierz on Thursday for a tough game against the a dangerous Pioneers team (5-6 CMC, 5-17).

  • B-B-E 90, Rockford 76

Another hot night from field goal range fueled the Jaguars to a 48-39 halftime lead, as they shot 57% from the floor (3-of-5 beyond the arc) to help overcome 15-of-30 free throw shooting. Four Jaguars hit double figures in the blowout win, with senior Matt Goodwin having an outstanding all-around game with 14 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocked shots.

Rockford fell to 5-4 in the CMC with the loss. They are now 6-5 in the CMC and 8-15 overall.

B-B-E scoring: Bennett Weller 17 (5 reb), Kevin Kuefler 28 (4 steals), Matt Goodwin 14 (6 reb 9 assists 4 steals 3 blocks), Brady Koehler 13 (5 assists), Brandon DeKok 6 (5 reb), Kirby Montbriand 8, Connor Goodwin 4.

**This week the Jaguars girls basketball team hosts Rockford on Tuesday night in a CMC game. The Rockets currently hold down 2nd place in the CMC at 9-3 (17-7 overall).

On Thursday the Jaguars host Maple Lake, in a game that will be aired on 106.5 FM. The next night, Kimball Area comes to town for the final regular season game.

Jaguars girls basketball defeats Eden Valley-Watkins

The Jaguars won 34-30 over the visiting Eagles, extending their winning streak to three in a row. Incredibly, the score was 9-9 at halftime. This win marks the first time in school history that the Jaguars girls basketball team has swept the season series from Eden Valley-Watkins. They are now 5-6 in the CMC and 9-14 overall, with a real shot at climbing to third place in the league if they win out on the schedule.

Lauren Anderson posted another double double (11 points, 11 rebounds), while Raeann Sorenson led the Jaguars in scoring with 13 points and 9-of-10 free throw shooting.

Eden Valley-Watkins falls to 7-5 in the CMC and 9-12 overall.

Jaguars girls basketball picks up a much-needed win at always-tough Pierz 52-44, Boys basketball scorches Ashby 91-59

The Jaguars girls basketball team made the most of a long road trip to Pierz tonight, as they picked up their 8th win of the season by a 52-44 margin over the Pioneers (9-13, 4-8 CMC). Seven players hit the scoring column for the Jaguars, led by junior Julie Hieserich's 15 points and two three-pointers.

The Jaguars, who led 29-18 at halftime, improve to 4-6 in the Central Minnesota Conference.

Up next: the Jaguars girls basketball team hosts Eden Valley-Watkins on Friday night in a CMC game. The Eagles (7-4 CMC, 9-11) are vastly improved from the last time the two teams met on January 7, when the Jaguars picked up their first win of the season in Eden Valley 53-34.

All four games remaining on the schedule for the Jaguars are home conference games, and they have a chance at running the table. A 12-14 overall record and 8-6 in the CMC would look very good going into the Sub-Section 6A-South tournament. They have a real shot at moving from 9th place in the sub-section to as high as 6th or 7th when seeding takes place later this month.

In a home game tonight, the Jaguars boys basketball team improved to 18-3 overall with a 91-59 over the sub-section Ashby Arrows (8-11). After leading 30-14 at halftime, the Jaguars cranked up the after-burners and proceeded to outscore the Arrows 61-45 in the second half. A total of 13 players scored for the Jaguars - the entire team.

Kevin Kuefler scored a team-high 25 points, with fellow junior Bennett Weller leading the team beyond the arc with four three-pointers.

Up next: the Jaguars boys basketball team travels to Paynesville next Tuesday for a non-conference game.

Jaguars Hoops are both winners tonight on the hardcourt - Boys rough up Kimball 84-53, Girls thump Osakis 50-29

Rachel Anderson spins near the baseline to get a tough shot off during the Jaguars' 50-29 win over non-conference Osakis tonight. She led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Jaguars girls basketball team picked up their 7th win of the season with a convincing 50-29 win at Osakis. The Silverstreaks are a young team, enduring a rare losing season, and they fall to 7-13 overall with the loss.

The Jaguars (7-14) expanded on a single-digit lead at halftime to go up 30-19. A three-point play by Raeann Sorenson only three minutes into the second half made it 33-21. Four minutes later, a Julie Hieserich three-pointer put the Jaguars on top 38-21 and they never looked back.

The Jaguars boys basketball team is now 10-1 in the Central Minnesota Conference (17-3 overall) after a huge 84-53 win over visiting Kimball Area (2-8 CMC, 6-12). The game was aired on The Train 106.5FM.

Nine Jaguars scored in the big win over the Cubs, led by Kevin Kuefler's 29 points.

**In a very thrilling game at Minnewaska Area tonight, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta boys basketball team survived a scare from the host Lakers, as the Tigers scored on a buzzer-beater to win 67-66. The Lakers held a one-point lead with 11 seconds left, but went 0-for-2 at the free throw line to give MA/CA a chance.

Albany survived a scare from Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in boys basketball: Albany 41, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 40. (The Thunder were hosts)

In the premier matchup of the basketball season, NL-S whips Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, final score 89-68

It's ugly in New London.

I heard that a few minutes into the second half, NL-S led 60-35.

With about 8:00 left, the Wildcats led 74-50.

The state-rankings are living up to their billing tonight, as the Wildcats are ranked #1 in Class AA.

MA/CA has some work to do before they meet NL-S again.

**Out west at the University of Minnesota-Morris fieldhouse, the Hancock Owls girls basketball team (15-3) suffered only their third loss of the season in the Pheasant/Little Eight Conference shootout, falling by a 67-59 score to Parkers Prairie. Their 11-game winning streak was halted in the process.

Parkers Prairie improved to 18-1 overall.

Jaguars Girls Basketball stung by last-second shot by Holdingford in a home CMC game, 41-39

The Jaguars girls basketball team lost 41-39 to Holdingford tonight. It's a broken record - another heartbreaking loss. They were stung on a last-second rebound putback by the Huskers, who improve to 6-5 in the Central Minnesota Conference and 12-9 overall.

Holdingford didn't score their first points of the game until the 7:58 mark in the first half. The Jaguars had built a 6-0 lead by that point, as both teams were playing near-flawless defense. A Huskers' field goal at the 7:30 mark in the first half made it 6-4, and Holdingford went on to pull in front 18-14 by halftime.

With 4:36 left in the second half, the Jaguars led 34-32. Two free throws by the Huskers' talented senior center Rachel Nelson tied the game.

Holdingford took a 39-37 lead into the final minute of the game. With 42 seconds left, the Jaguars took a timeout after the Huskers went 0/2 at the free throw line.

After the Jaguars worked down the clock while managing to hang onto possession, sophomore Raeann Sorenson fired up a tough baseline shot with heavy pressure, it crawled over the front rim to tie the game at 39-39 with 5.4 seconds left.

Holdingford fired a long pass downcourt, where senior guard Nicole Berscheid put up a driving shot that rimmed out. Senior guard Stephanie Hellmann quickly put back the rebound and scored with less than a second on the clock.
Game over.

Senior Rachel Anderson's double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds led the Jaguars, who are now 3-6 in the CMC and 6-14 overall.

I look for the Jaguars to light up Osakis next Tuesday night in Osakis for a non-conference game. Another close loss will only provide more motivation to take it out on a struggling Silverstreaks team that is 7-12 overall and 6-5 in the Prairie Conference.

The Jaguars look to improve on their 6-13 overall record. They are 3-5 in the Central Minnesota Conference.

Jaguars Wrestling falls at Minnewaska 40-33

The Jaguars team welcomes Travis Winter back to the huddle after he won by pin at the 152-pound division.

Junior Ben Borgerding moves for a takedown in the 171-pound division, which he won.

The Jaguars fell short in their bid for a eighth dual meet victory to cap the regular season. After trailing 18-6 after four matches, the Jaguars made a rally to take a 23-22 lead following the 152-pound match, won by sophomore Dillon Knutson. They stretched the lead out to a 33-22 margin with a pin by Travis Winter and a major decision from Ben Borgerding.

The Lakers closed out the dual by winning the final three matches.

B-B-E will take a 7-15 overall record into Section 5A action, beginning next Tuesday night at 6pm at the A-C-GC High School in Grove City. The #9-seeded Jaguars take on #8-seeded Browerville/Eagle Valley. The Broncos are 17-9 in dual meets.

The top individual records for the Jaguars are held by seniors Travis Winter (32-2) and Cole Tensen (32-3).

Jaguars Boys Basketball wins a shootout at Rockford, 90-76 - Jaguars Girls basketball squeezes past K-M-S 45-42 in OT

Junior forward Kevin Kuefler poured in 28 points tonight for the Jaguars, as they swept Rockford for only the 2nd time in school history in a 90-76 win.

The Jaguars boys basketball team improved to 16-3 on the season and 9-1 in the Central Minnesota Conference with the win. Four Jaguars in double figures, led by Kevin Kuefler's 28 points, fueled their attack. The visiting Jaguars led 48-39 at halftime.

Rockford is now 5-4 in the CMC and 7-13 overall.

This marks only the 2nd time in school history that the Jaguars boys basketball team has swept Rockford in CMC play. Back in 2001-2002, they also went 2-0 against the Rockets before finishing 12-2 in the league and 23-4 overall.

The Jaguars have four CMC games left on the schedule, all against the 5th-8th place teams in the league. They need to go 3-1 in those games to win at least a share of the championship. Second-place Maple Lake (7-2), meanwhile, still has Rockford and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in their schedule.

**A scheduling note: the Jaguars boys basketball team at Paynesville Area will be made up on Tuesday, February 23. Also, in case anyone was wondering, here's the basic schedule for the Section 6A boys basketball playoffs: March 11 the Jaguars would host a 7pm game, March 13 in a Saturday afternoon game they'd play at the University of Minnesota-Morris, March 16 they'd play again at UM-Morris, March 19 they'd play at Concordia College in Moorhead.

In a home game tonight, the Jaguars girls basketball team dipped Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg below .500 with a 45-42 overtime win. The Jaguars improved to 6-13 with the win, while K-M-S is now 9-10 overall.

A three-point shot by sophomore Raeann Sorenson boosted the Jaguars into a 39-39 tie in the final minute of regulation play. Eight Jaguars scored altogether in a balanced attack, led by double-doubles by the Anderson cousins.

The Jaguars (5-13) will open up against #8 seed Browerville/Eagle Valley on Tuesday, February 16 at 6pm at the A-C-GC High School in Grove City. The winner advances to the Section 5A quarterfinals, which will be held later that same evening.

Osakis and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle will be facing off at the same time at A-C-GC in another play-in match.

For the Jaguars, their #9 seed is a nice improvement over their #12 ranking back in 2009, when they had to open up against then-#5-seeded Minnewaska Area. The Jaguars fell 39-23 in that playoff-opening match.

In 2008, the Jaguars lost 38-31 to Holdingford in the Section 5A opener.

In 2007, the Jaguars won 42-32 over Meadow Creek Christian/Rivers Academy in the play-in round before losing 53-15 to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in the 5A quarterfinals.

Tonight (Thursday) the Jaguars boys basketball team travels to Rockford for a CMC game against the Rockets. It will be a challenging game. Rockford is 5-3 in the CMC and 7-12 overall. The Jaguars are 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the CMC, holding first place alone as they get into the second half of the conference season.

The Jaguars girls basketball team hosts the 9-9 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints tonight (Thursday) in a non-conference game. They then host 10-9 Holdingford on Friday night in a Central Minnesota Conference game. The Huskers are 4-5 in the CMC, with a half-game lead over the Jaguars for 4th place in the standings.

Jaguars Boys Basketball bounces back from 3rd loss of the season with a convincing win vs. Maple Lake

The Jaguars (15-3, 8-1 CMC) are now in the driver's seat in the hunt for the Central Minnesota Conference after their 63-38 win over the visiting Irish. Their 8-1 record right now in the league won't mean much, though, if they don't beat Rockford later next week in Rockford.

Maple Lake's boys basketball team falls to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the CMC.

Central Minnesota Conference boys basketball results:
Pierz 75, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 67
Eden Valley-Watkins 61, Kimball Area 39

The Jaguars girls basketball team lost at Ashby 70-65 in a fast-paced game filled with numerous lead changes. The loss damages their ability to jump over the Arrows (7-8) in the sub-section seeding picture.

Ashby's senior Amanda Johnson poured in 34 points, hauled in eight rebounds, and grabbed five steals to lead her team to the win.

They still have room to move up - they just need to get on a winning streak, and fast. Their overall record is 5-13 with eight games left on the schedule before playoffs. In my opinion, all eight are very winnable games. Even going 6-2 down the stretch would set them up well for a mid-range seed in Sub-Section 6A-South. They just need to take it one game at a time.

cJaguars Girls Basketball takes a very tough loss at home to conference leader HL-W-W by 10 points **Jaguars boys basketball suffers third defeat

The Jaguars girls basketball team fall to 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the CMC with a 59-49 loss to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (9-0 CMC, 16-4). The Jaguars led 31-27 at halftime and still had the lead with 10 minutes left in the game before the Lakers converted turnovers into points and remained in control the rest of the way.

They now prepare for a road trip to Ashby on Friday night, to face the 6-8 Arrows. It's a must-win situation if they want to gain ground in the Sub-Section 6A-South standings.

Ashby just lost to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 50-40 tonight.

The Jaguars boys basketball team fell by a 77-72 score at Dawson-Boyd tonight, shattering their 11-game winning streak in the process. The only consolation is that it was a non-conference, non-section game.

The Blackjacks led 48-38 at halftime, after jumping in front by 15 points in the early stages of the game. That long bus-ride probably didn't do the Jaguars any favors. (At least it'll give them a taste of what they face in the playoffs in Section 6A.)

Dawson-Boyd improves to 9-5 overall with the non-conference win. More on this game will follow on Friday.

Jaguars Wrestling at Minnewaska tonight is cancelled

The area is currently under a winter weather watch.

Click here to read more about that = http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localalerts/56334?phenomena=WW&significance=Y&areaid=MNZ048&office=KMPX&etn=0009

It was reported tonight that the Minnewaska Area wrestling team has had to forfeit a few matches beginning this week. Last weekend at the West Central South Conference tournament, apparently a skin infection was present and all the WCCS teams have had to scrub some matches from their schedule this week.

**Luckily, this won't affect the Jaguars wrestling team whatsoever, other than losing a chance at gaining ground in the Section 5A standings with a possible win over the Lakers tonight. Their next action is next Tuesday in Melrose.

Coming Thursday night for the Jaguars wrestling, boys & girls basketball

**Tonight, Thursday, three of the winter Varsity Jaguars teams are in action.

The Jaguars wrestling team travels to Minnewaska for a 6pm dual non-conference meet against the Lakers. The match will be aired on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood. The B-squad match will begin sometime between 4:30 and 5pm.

You can listen to the match online by following this link: http://www.kmgk1071.com/

Minnewaska Area wrestling is 7-8 overall in duals this season. They started 0-4 and 1-7 before rallying to win six of their past seven matches. The Lakers defeated Holdingford 35-32 on January 26.

The Jaguars have a good shot against the Lakers, and it's a must-win situation if they wish to climb in the 12-team Section 5A standings, where they currently sit near the bottom of the pack.

**Update at 5pm - the meet was cancelled.

The Jaguars girls basketball team hosts Central Minnesota Conference front-runner Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted tonight. In a nutshell, I like the Jaguars' chances. They need to get hot in February and pick up some wins in order to get out of the bottom tier of the Sub-Section 6A-South standings.

HL-W-W girls basketball is 15-4 overall and 8-0 in the CMC, holding a two-game lead over second-place Rockford (13-5, 6-2 CMC). They defeated the Jaguars in a competitive game back in December by a 53-39 margin.

**The Jaguars danceline squad will perform at halftime, while the B-B-E Pep Band will also show their talents during pre-game and at halftime.

The Jaguars boys basketball team travels to Dawson tonight in a non-conference game against the 8-5 Blackjacks, who are 5-2 in the Camden North Conference.

The Jaguars (14-2, 7-1 CMC) will look to make it two straight over Dawson-Boyd, who they defeated last season in their first-ever matchup by a 62-46 score in December 2008.

Parkers Prairie's win last Thursday night elevated the Panthers to a 13-1 record and a No. 3 ranking through the first half of the season. The Panthers moved to 6-1 in the Little Eight Conference with the win. The Chargers fell to 10-4 and 4-3 in league play.

Both are two of the top teams in Sub-Section 6A-South, in which the Jaguars boys and girls basketball teams compete for post-season play.

Both basketball teams win tonight - Boys drub Eden Valley-Watkins 63-46, Girls get past Melrose 43-35

Senior post Lauren Anderson swats away a Melrose field goal attempt tonight, late in the Jaguars' win over the neighboring rival Dutchmen. She tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds in the game.

The Jaguars girls basketball team improved to 5-11 overall with the win. They led 17-12 at halftime. Melrose, who is 6-4 in the West Central South Conference, falls to 8-9 overall.

The Jaguars girls basketball team stretched their five-point halftime lead at Melrose into double digits, leading by as much as a 28-17 margin. After the Dutchmen went on a 7-0 run, two paint buckets by Raeann Sorenson and Maggie Gruber gave the Jaguars more breathing room.

Julie Hieserich then scored off of the press to make it 34-28 with 5:04 on the clock.

Down the stretch, strong free throw shooting by the Jaguars kept Melrose at bay, highlighted by Sorenson's 4-of-4 performance at the line.

The Jaguars boys basketball team led 33-17 at halftime on their way to another double-digit win in Central Minnesota Conference play, as they dropped Eden Valley-Watkins to 4-12 overall on the season and 1-6 in the CMC.

The Jaguars came back from early 4-2 and 6-4 deficits to throttle the Eagles in the final nine minutes of the first half. At the 9:15 mark, B-B-E led 14-10, but by halftime they had a 33-17 lead.
