Area football updates

**Update at 9:25pm...The Central Minnesota Conference has three teams in section final games: Eden Valley-Watkins, Pierz and Maple Lake. What a huge accomplishment for the Central Minnesota Conference.

All three teams very well could make the state tournament - obviously EV-W has the best chance. Don't count out Maple Lake, though - they play a 7-3 Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop team at SCSU on Friday, November 6 at 5:45pm.

Section 6AA:
Pierz is beating Osakis 37-0 going into the 4th quarter in a 2 vs. 3-seed matchup.
That ended up as the final score.

The Pioneers rushed for 320 yards.

Crosby-Ironton ended Holdingford's stellar turnaround season with a 35-28 win over the visiting Huskers. Holdingford finishes 6-4, C-I improves to 10-0.

Section 5AA:
Eden Valley-Watkins was beating Morris Area 20-0 in the second half. They are beating Morris Area 39-6 in the fourth quarter.

Yellow Medicine East is leading #2-seeded BOLD 14-0 with only 6:00 left in the game.
That was the final score.

Section 4A:
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 61, St.Agnes 6 (UUF DA! the country boys smash the city boys)
St. Bernard's 49, Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 11

Jaguars Volleyball pummels visiting Upsala, 2nd best Prairie Conference team, in 3-0 sweep - Up Next: Kimball next Tuesday

U.S. economy grew 3.5% in the most recent quarter

After four brutal quarters of the economy shrinking, the economy actually grew 3.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

It is more evidence that the recession may be ending. It's too soon to know 100%, we still need 1 more quarter of growth to know that.

Exports and imports increased, motor vehicle sales increased, as just a few examples of how the growth has taken place.

Will it last? Time will tell.

Jaguars football loses hearbreaking battle with #4-seeded Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity in a 14-10 game

The Jaguars wrap up the 2009 season with a 2-7 overall record, falling in the Section 4A quarterfinals. They led 10-7 in the third quarter before the Bulldogs scored a game-winning touchdown. A scoreless fourth quarter played out in a very thrilling playoff game.

The seniors on the team should be proud of the season they had, standing tall against some of the best AA teams in the state. Five CMC teams (Holdingford, EV-W, Maple Lake, Pierz, and HL-W-W) won first-round games, I think that's the most playoff opening wins by the Central Minnesota Conference ever.

Not only that, but all five CMC teams have a shot at making the section titles in Sections 6AA, 5AA, and 4AA. If that happens, HL-W-W and Maple Lake would face eachother again, and Holdingford and Pierz would also battle it out for a state tournament berth.

LP/HT improves to 6-3 overall with their win over B-B-E. They will take on top-seeded St.Bernard's on Saturday night at 7pm at Hamline University.

More will follow on Thursday regarding area playoff action in Prep Football. There were no real upsets, for the most part top seeds handled the 5-8 seeds without any close calls.

Section 5A volleyball seedings released just 15 minutes ago - Jaguars seeded #1 and will probably host Upsala

The number-seven state ranked Jaguars Volleyball team is seeded number one for the third straight season for playoffs, and fifth time in the last six seasons.

They will host the winner of Thursday night's Eden Valley-Watkins vs. Upsala match for the Sub-Section 5A-South quarterfinals.

That will be held this Friday at 7pm at home.

If the Jaguars win, they would get a second home playoff match next Tuesday (November 3rd) against the other remaining team still alive.

EV-W (3-18, 1-6 CMC) is the #5 seed in the southwest pod, while Upsala (18-5-1, 8-2 Prairie) is seeded number four.

The seven-team southwest pod is very competitive, with Kimball Area (20-6) at number two, Osakis (17-6-3) at number three, and Upsala (18-5-1) at number four.

In the northwest pod of Section 5A, Sebeka (20-5-1) swiped the #1 seed from Bertha-Hewitt (25-4), mostly due to their 3-0 sweep of the Bears on October 22 in the Park Region conference championship.

Sebeka and Bertha-Hewitt are odds-on favorites to battle one another for the right to face the Jaguars in the Sub-Section Section 5A-West championship match, which will be held on Thursday, November 5th at Brainerd High School. (That assumes that the Jaguars will win their first two matches in the sub-section.)

Full Section 5A, Southwest pod pairings:

10/29 action:
#7 Swanville at #2 Kimball Area - 7pm

#6 Royalton at #3 Osakis - 7pm

#5 Eden Valley-Watkins at #4 Upsala - 7pm

10/30 action:

EVW/Upsala Winner at #1 Belrade-Brooten- Elrosa - 7pm

Swanville/Kimball Area winner vs. Royalton/Osakis winner at high seed - 7pm

11/3 Winners at High Seed - 7pm or 8:01pm - depending on site and teams

More will follow later. Lots to chew on as playoffs are staring us in the face!

Some area football notes

The Pierz Pioneers football team is 32-1 in the past six seasons on their home football field. They have never lost a post-season game at the Pierz field in the last six years. They will host West Central Area (who beat the Jaguars 20-7 in Week 1) for the Section 6AA opener next Tuesday night. The Pioneers have the #2 seed, while the Knights (4-4) are seeded #7. WCA was snakebitten in their regular season finale 12-6 to the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, who went 0-7 before their upset win against the Knights.

Had WCA defeated W-DC, the Knights would've had the #6 seed and traveled to Osakis (the #3 seed) for the opener.

Quite a difference, huh?

On paper, Osakis is 7-1 and Pierz is 7-1...but I'd say Pierz is 10 times tougher!

Yeh I'm biased, of course, hoping for success of Central Minnesota Conference teams.

In Section 4AA, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted has the #3 seed, with Maple Lake ranked #4. Kimball Area is rated #5, and they travel to Maple Lake for the 4AA quarterfinals. HL-W-W hosts a really bad St.Paul Humboldt team (the #6 seed).

And now, a story on the Upsala-Swanville Area vs. Royalton football game that's set for the Section 6A opener next week in Upsala.

Playoffs give us gift of Royalton v. USA part two
Matt Perkins
Morrison County Record sports reporter

Its reputation preceded itself, and it did not disappoint. USA won, last minute, 7-6.

I described it as one of the best high school football games, if not the best, I have ever seen.

And now, football fans are about to get a second dose of Royalton vs. USA.

While Tuesday night's first round of the playoffs bring plenty of great match-ups, including Pierz hosting West Central and Little Falls traveling to Rocori, I find myself licking my chops over the thought of another helping of Royals vs. Patriots.

Without taking away anything from other area football programs, this particular match-up always impresses because both teams have it all:

Hard-hitting linebackers, agile pass rushers and, overall, defensive-minded football teams - check. Athletic offenses fueled by speed more than size - check. Coaches that coach a team up, year after year, despite graduating talent - check. Superstar athletes - check.

I mean anyone who has watched them this season will tell you, Royalton's Zach Lanners and USA's Brandon Welinski are worth the price of admission. While Welinski is the run-first quarterback in the Patriots' wildcat-like offense, thus he touches the ball every play on offense, Lanners might as well be seen the same way. Even if the Royals don't hand it off or pass it to Lanners, opposing defenses are forced to assume he will touch the ball. That's just how talented Lanners is, explaining why the kid is getting feelers from schools like USC and Notre Dame.

But, most of all, this match-up comes down to the fans in the stands who travel to support their small town teams. It is the fans that create an atmosphere that leaves us sportswriters thinking after a great game, "I can't believe I just got paid to watch that."

PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

I don't have the guts to pick a winner between the Royals and the Patriots. But in Pierz, look for the Pioneers to continue its home field successes. And how about a fairy tale trip to state for the Little Falls Flyers? At least a first round win.

PREDICTION - Pierz over West Central, 38-7; Little Falls limits Rocori's passing offense in a 16-14 win for the Flyers.

Jaguars Volleyball sweeps Holdingford, wraps up 24-5 regular season and 3rd straight 7-0 CMC season, 4th title in a row

The Jaguars won 25-16 in game one after opening up an early 18-5 lead.

Games two and three went to the Jaguars 25-12, 25-14.

The game was aired on 107.1 FM out of Glenwood.

The Huskers enter Section 6AA-North playoffs 9-15-1 overall, with a 2-5 final record in the Central Minnesota Conference.

The Jaguars are now four-time defending CMC champions, having won the crown outright with 7-0 records in 2007, 2008, and 2009. They open Sub-Section 5A-South playoffs at home next Friday (Oct 30) - assuming they receive the #1 seed in the "southwest" pod of Section 5A.

By the way, a big shoutout to junior cross country runner Grant Bell, who earned All-Central Minnesota Conference honors at the CMC Meet on October 13. Bell took second place in the boys division. He placed fifth as a sophomore to earn All-CMC honors in 2008.

The Jaguars cross country team runs in the Section 6A meet on October 29 at Long
Prairie.

Central Minnesota Conference results:
Maple Lake 3, Eden Valley-Watkins 0
Kimball Area 3, Rockford 0
HL-W-W 3, Pierz 0 (hard to believe that one!)

In a stunning outcome in Park Region volleyball action, the Bertha-Hewitt Bears lost in a 3-0 sweep to the Sebeka Trojans in what was the conference championship, as both teams were 5-0 in league play going into the match. The Bears are the #4-ranked team in Class A and the top team who will challenge the Jaguars for the 5A-South sub-section crown.

Bertha-Hewitt falls to 24-4 overall with one match remaining before playoffs (tonight against a bad Eagle Valley team) - Sebeka improves to 16-4-1, while also enjoying the right to take the 2009 Park Region championship tropy to their high school. Sebeka was champions (6-0) of the Park Region in 2008 and 2007 as well, with the Bears finishing as runners-up. In 2006, 2005, and 2004, the Bears were undefeated champions.

Sebeka and Nevis are the top teams in Sub-Section 5A-North. They duked it out in 2008 for the sub-section title, with Nevis coming out on top.

Area volleyball scores:
Canby 3, Hancock 0 (Owls are competitive in all 3 games against the #3 ranked Lancers and are 20-6 overall going into 6A playoffs)
BOLD 3, Paynesville Area 2 (Bulldogs played in six 3-2 matches, and won two of them)
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 3, Ortonville 0
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 3, Milaca 0
Marshall 3, MACCRAY 0
Sauk Centre 3, Mora 0 (Sauk is 23-3 going into 6AA playoffs, ranked #1 in the north half)
Sebeka 3, Bertha-Hewitt 0 *a result with big 5A implications)

Area football scores:
Yellow Medicine East 20, Lac qui Parle Valley 6
Willmar 42, St.Cloud Apollo 12

Sub-Section 6AA-North seedings:
1- Sauk Centre
2- Pierz
3- Melrose Area
4- Albany
5- Little Falls
6- Long Prairie/Grey Eagle
7- Holdingford
8- Staples-Motley

Hats off to Melrose Area, who have had a great year and earned a #3 seed for post-season action, their best ranking since 2004.

Sub-Section 6AA-South seedings:
1- New London-Spicer
2- Rocori
3- Annandale
4- St.Cloud Cathedral
5- Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted
6- Dassel-Cokato
7- Litchfield
8- Paynesville Area

In Section 5AA, Maple Lake earned the #1 seed for the north half. Delano, the #5-ranked team in Class AA, is the #1 seed in the south half. The Irish (17-6) have a great shot at advancing to the section finals for the first time since 2007.

Section 4A football standings are complete - playoff quarterfinals set for Tuesday, October 27 - Jaguars open at Lester Prairie

Travis Winter and Eric Speldrich are shown teaming up with a third Jaguar defender as they smother a Kimball Cubs ball carrier - they are two of 14 seniors on this year's Jaguars football team. Section 4A playoffs begin for B-B-E at Lester Prairie next Tuesday night. Read more below.

Two final scores from Wednesday night action: St. Agnes 40, West Lutheran 7 - St.Anthony Village 24, St.Bernard's 21.

The Jaguars Football team is seeded #5 for the upcoming Section 4A quarterfinals, and they will open at #4-seeded Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity next Tuesday night at 7:00pm. The LP/HT Bulldogs play their games in Lester Prairie, which is straight south of Howard Lake.

The total distance from the B-B-E high school to Lester Prairie, driving through Litchfield and Howard Lake, is 76 miles. (A better path may exist that I'm unaware of.)

"131 Hickory Street North" is where the Lester Prairie school is located.

The Bulldogs' football field is located on the southeast end of Lester Prairie, near the swimming pool. If you head two blocks to the south from the school, turn left, it's about 3 blocks down from the K-12 building of Lester Prairie.

Section 4A Quarterfinal matchups:
#1- St.Bernard's first round bye
#2 St.Agnes vs. #7 Lions Gate Academy
#3 A-C-GC vs. #6 West Lutheran
#4 LP/HT vs. #5 B-B-E

The following are mini-capsules of the seven teams of Section 4A, detailing their section ranking, overall record, and the points earned in regular season play in games where they earned points.

#1 - St.Bernard's is 5-3, they lost a close matchup with Class AAA St.Anthony Village 24-21 on Wednesday night. They have 33 points with five wins against 3A teams, and three losses against 3A teams.

#2 - St.Agnes is 5-3, with an assortment of wins and losses against 1A, 2A, and 3A teams. They have 24 points.

#3 - Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City is 4-4, with four wins against 2A teams, and four losses against 2A teams, all West Central South Conference opponents. They have 24 section points but lose the tiebreaker with St.Agnes due to one fewer regular season wins.

#4 - Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity is 5-3, with three wins against 1A teams and two wins against 2A teams, along with one loss to a 3A team. They have 23 points.

#5 - B-B-E is 2-6, with one win against a 3A team, a win against a 2A team, and six losses to 2A teams. They have 17 points.

#6 - West Lutheran finished 3-5 in the regular season, they have 15 points with two wins against 2A teams, a loss to a 3A team, and one win against a 1A team.

#7 - Lions Gate/Bethany Academy is 3-5, with two wins against 2A teams, one win against a 1A team, and one loss to a 3A team. They have 15 points. They lose the tie-breaker with West Lutheran due to their 20-13 loss to West Lutheran in Week 2.

More information will be posted later today regarding the LP/HT Bulldogs football team, and other random playoff information.

Don't forget! Tonight the Jaguars Volleyball team will be on Smooth Magic 107.1 FM out of Glenwood in their final regular season match against CMC rival Holdingford, beginning at 7:30pm. Pre-game coverage will start at about 7:15. It will be one final tune-up before Sub-Section 5A-South playoffs begin later next week.

Jaguars Football trails 44-20 at halftime at Holdingford

It's been an offensive shootout at Holdingford in the regular season finale for the Jaguars and Huskers.

An interception and a lost fumble against the Jaguars have hurt their cause, leading to the halftime score.

It is easily the highest-scoring first half ever that a B-B-E football team has participated in.

More will follow later tonight.

Monday, October 19, 2009

Jaguars Volleyball gives a big statement tonight, buries the visiting Osakis Silverstreaks in a three-game sweep

The Jaguars Volleyball team won its 23rd match of the season in a 3-0 sweep tonight against the Osakis Silverstreaks. The match was broadcast on Glenwood's Smooth Magic 107.1 FM. Game scores were 25-6, 25-13, 25-17.

Osakis falls to 17-6-3 overall. They are the 2009 Prairie Conference champions with a 9-1 league record and one of the top teams in Sub-Section 5A-South. They were no match, however, for the power and balance of the Jaguars volleyball team.

The Jaguars improve to 23-5 overall, with one match remaining in the regular season. This Thursday they will travel to Holdingford (9-13-1, 2-4 CMC) to close out the Central Minnesota Conference schedule. They already have the CMC title wrapped up with their 6-0 record. Pierz and Kimball both hold down second place at 4-2 each.

The Thursday night match at Holdingford will also be aired on Smooth Magic 107.

**Tuesday night, the Jaguars football team (2-5, 2-4 CMC) will attempt to pick up their third win of the season with a road game at Holdingford. That game will be aired on Smooth Magic 107. The Huskers are 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the CMC.

All that B-B-E coverage has led sports broadcaster Dave McClurg to dub this week "Jaguars Week" - thanks for the coverage, Dave!

Area volleyball results:

BOLD 3, Montevideo 2
Holdingford 3, Swanville 0

Some fun facts about football shutouts by the Jaguars

On September 8, 2006, the Jaguars buried the visiting Rockford Rockets 27-0. On September 26, 2003, two winless teams (both 0-4) met in Belgrade, with the host Jaguars beating Kimball 20-0. Back in the 2000 season, the Jaguars won an early season game against Kimball by a 9-0 score on the road.

In 1997 during a 7-4 campaign, the Jaguars recorded two regular season shutouts (LQPV, Montevideo).

I believe they had one in 1993 during a 5-5 year.

In their only win of 1989 at New London-Spicer (the "Toilet bowl" - two winless teams met in Week 8), the Jaguars won 27-0.

In an 8-2 year in 1988 (the first B-B-E team) they had two shutouts.

We've only had 10 shutouts at B-B-E in 22 seasons, 196 games played as the Jaguars.

Orders being taken right now for special T-shirts for Heidi Deters, helping in her fight against cancer

Special note from an employee at Bayer Built - Kris (Skarpness) Cortez, B-B-E Class of 1996.

Pictured are Jamie and Heidi Deters and their three children.

We are going to make some Tshirts to wear and sell at Heidi’s benefit. The bad part is it was a late idea, so we are short on time. If any of you would like to order a Tshirt, please email me back ASAP! I need to have the order in by 1:30 today for the Tshirts to make it by tomorrow so they can start screen printing them. We don’t know an exact price yet, but we should be getting them at cost (Thanks to Erica Van Beck) and then anything above that will be profit for Heidi! We also don’t know the exact design yet, it should be finalized today. It will say Fight like a girl (from the Bombshell song) in purple with a purple ribbon and possibly boxing gloves hanging from the ribbon. The T-shirts will be black. I am assuming the shirts run in mens sizes, but I am waiting to hear back. Please specify for each, just in case. We will order extra to sell and if you get this after 1:30 today, we can hopefully still get you a T-shirt!!

Also, Michelle (Gjerde) Herickhoff had talked to Angie Gregory and said many people who have volunteered to help were wondering what time to show up. Angie would like a list of people coming to help. Can you email me that back as well? That we have until Friday of this week and then we will send her a list.

Please get back to me ASAP!!
Thanks,
Kris Cortez

Her e-mail is = KCortez@bayerbuilt.com Please include what size and how many you want in the e-mail!!!

With their backs to the wall, Jaguars Football pitches a 15-0 shutout against Kimball, holds onto 5th place in Section 4A standings

The Jaguars football team improved to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the Central Minnesota Conference with a shutout win over the visiting Kimball Area Cubs.

A 15-0 score after one quarter of play stood the rest of the game - the Cubs coughed up the ball five times on lost fumbles and the Jaguars also earned one interception.

Up next: a Tuesday night (Oct 20) trip to Huskers Territory to face Holdingford in the final game of the regular season. The Huskers lost 20-6 at Pierz on Tuesday night, falling to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Central Minnesota Conference.

Around the Central Minnesota Conference:
The Maple Lake Irish traveled to the two-year old stadium of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School and came away with a big 27-6 win over the Lakers. The Irish improve to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the CMC, while also edging HL-W-W in the Section 4AA standings. HL-W-W is 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the CMC.

Rockford continued its winless ways with a 55-7 loss on their home field to Class AA #2-ranked Eden Valley-Watkins. It set up a Central Minnesota Conference "Toilet Bowl" for next week, a rare game in which teams with zero conference wins will meet up to see who will spend the off-season smarting from sitting at the bottom of the CMC standings until 2010.

As stated earlier, Pierz defeated visiting Holdingford 20-6 to improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the CMC. The Pioneers travel to Howard Lake next week with a shot at locking up second place in the final league standings.

Speaking of Section 4A...
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City hosted a struggling 1-5 Benson Braves team and survived a scare, winning 28-26 to improve to 3-4 overall. They manage to hold onto the #3 spot in the Section 4A standings.

Results from other games involving Section 4A teams (section teams in italics):
-Lion's Gate/Bethany Academy 10, New Life Academy 6
-Providence Acad./Heritage 42, Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 3
-West Lutheran 34, St. John's Prep 0
-St.Croix Lutheran 53, St.Bernard's 19
-Le Center 33, St.Agnes 0

A logjam exists between the second and sixth spots in the section standings, with only five points separating 2nd and 6th place! (For arguments sake, five points is earned by a win over a Class AA team, and six points is earned by beating a Class AAA or AAAA team.)

**Revised standings:
1st - St.Bernard's (32 points)
2nd - St.Agnes (20 points)
3rd - A-C-GC (19 points)
4th - Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity (18 points)
5th - B-B-E (16 points)
6th - West Lutheran (15 points)
7th - Lions Gate Academy (10 points)

Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity will most likely beat a 1-5 Class AA New Life Academy next week and finish with 23 section points. New Life Academy's only win this season is against St.John's Prep by a 33-14 score. A-C-GC will probably beat LP-GE to finish with 24 section points, and that would tie what St.Agnes will probably finish with, as they play Class A West Lutheran (3-4) in the final regular season game. West Lutheran does have a shot against St.Agnes, and if they did win they would finish with 19 section points - putting them ahead of the Jaguars if they lose at Holdingford. The Jaguars would fall to sixth place if that happens.

I haven't found out how the section handles tie-breakers. I recall that Section 5A used a coin flip to break a tie.

LP-GE does have a chance of beating visiting A-C-GC next week, which would be a huge gift to the Jaguars, providing the Jaguars beat Holdingford. The Jaguars would leapfrog A-C-GC to grab number four if that happens.

The bottom line is, the Jaguars must beat Holdingford and control their own destiny.

Ponder this: if the Jaguars had beaten WCA in Week 1 (a game they should've won) and then HL-W-W in Week 2 (a tough OT loss) - they would be 4-3 now and playing for an above-.500 record at Holdingford next week. It shows how little room for error exists being a Class A team in a mostly Class AA conference.

Also, even a 4-4 final record (with wins over WCA & HL-W-W) would give them 27 section points, nailing down the #2 seed as the season wraps up! Those two early losses hurt. Now it doesn't matter - the Jaguars need to beat Holdingford and get a winning streak going as section playoffs heat up later this month.

In a big Prairie South Conference matchup, Royalton invaded the Swanville football field to face the Upsala-Swanville Area Patriots. The Royals left town with a tough 7-6 loss, falling to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Prairie South. It leaves Class AA #5-ranked Osakis (6-0, 3-0 Prairie) as the only undefeated team left in the Prairie Conference. United North Central (5-2 overall) leads the Prairie North with a 4-0 record.

Area football results:
Melrose 29, Sauk Centre 15 (the Dutchmen win the classic border battle and the bragging rights that go with it)
Minnewaska Area 27, Paynesville Area 26 OT! (a tough loss on the home gridiron for the Bulldogs)
Albany 32, Foley 6 (a huge win for the Huskies in the West Central North Conference)
Alexandria 33, Little Falls 7
BOLD 41, Lac qui Parle Valley 0 (uuf da! BOLD is in playoff form)
Browerville 35, New York Mills 0
Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross 14, Ashby 8
Dawson-Boyd 14, Adrian 6 (a big win for the Blackjacks)
Eagle Valley 30, Wheaton 6
Glencoe-Silver Lake 35, Watertown-Mayer 6
Montevideo 35, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 6
New London-Spicer 47, St. Cloud Cathedral 0 (NL-S clinches share of WCCN title)
Osakis 39, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 6 (K-M-S is 0-4 in the Prairie South)
Rocori 20, Willmar 14 OT (tough loss for the Cardinals)
Yellow Medicine East 20, Morris Area 6

Jaguars Football hosts Kimball tonight (Wednesday) in a key game

The Jaguars still have a shot at hosting a first-round playoff game in Section 4A. A 3-5 record could give them a number-four seed depending on how other teams fare in the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Kimball Area Cubs are winless in the Central Minnesota Conference and 1-5 overall.

To make things more interesting, a huge snowstorm is sitting on the MN-SD state border as of 1:00pm, and it's on its way towards B-B-E country. "Healthy" amounts of snowfall is predicted.

It might be a rough drive to work on Thursday morning!

God Bless Minnesota weather - it always keeps you guessing.

Jaguars Volleyball improves to 21-5 overall with 3-0 sweep at Minnewaska Area

The Jaguars pounced on the Lakers in game one, stretching an early 10-6 lead into a double-digit lead that they held onto in a 25-11 win. They coasted in games two and three, winning 25-14, 25-15.

The match marked the first varsity start in the career of freshmen Taylor Braegelman, part of the starting six in place of Julie Hieserich, who was out with illness. Braegelman played with ice in her veins to the tune of 21 set assists - not bad for a rookie!

Jaguars Football team loses 54-0 at Eden Valley-Watkins

The Jaguars kept it respectable at halftime, down 28-0 to one of the best teams in Class AA. Three of the first four Eagles' touchdowns were on pass plays.

The last time the Jaguars played at Eden Valley, 2007, they trailed 48-0 at halftime.

Three of the past five seasons, the Jaguars suffered shutout defeats to the Eagles, all in Eden Valley. They lost 56-12 in 2006 and 60-14 in 2008 on the home field.

The really frustrating thing is, had the Jaguars stayed in the West Central South Conference - they'd be really competitive against Benson, Morris Area, Minnewaska Area, Lac qui Parle Valley - and even Paynesville and Montevideo - along with A-C-GC and Yellow Medicine East. I could see the Jaguars finishing 5-3 this year, even better other years in what is now the WCCS.

B-B-E competed in the West Central South Conference from the fall of 1989 to the spring of 1999.

In the mid 1990s, the push was made to switch conferences. At the time, no one knew that Eden Valley-Watkins would become a state power in football. The 1997 season was the Eagles' first winning season since the 1970s.

However, it should have been pretty obvious that schools to the west of B-B-E were falling in enrollment, while schools to the east were growing. A simple phone call to the various schools to the east and west would have shown that trend in 1997, 1998, 1999.

What's happened to the population of towns/schools between B-B-E and the Metro Area? For the most part, they've grown. It was a trend that started long before B-B-E switched to the Central Minnesota Conference in 1999.

It's easy to criticize a decision made many years ago, when you've got 20/20 hindsight - however, it's frustrating that decisions are made by people who have little or no perspective of what's going on outside the little "bubble" of a small, rural community.

At least the Jaguars can look forward to the final two regular season games, both winnable games - and hopefully they'll be able to go into playoffs with a 3-5 record and a shot at doing some damage in Section 4A.

Around the Central Minnesota Conference:
Pierz 31 @ Maple Lake 7
(Maple Lake's lone touchdown came on a kickoff return after trailing 28-0)
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 40 @ Kimball Area 8
(the Lakers led 40-0 in the 3rd quarter when the Cubs scored their lone touchdown of the game to make it 40-8 going into the 4th quarter)
Holdingford 30, Rockford 0
(the Huskers are 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the CMC, having won four in a row - from 2006-2008 they had a total of only three CMC wins)

Area football scores:
Morris Area 35, Benson 0
Albany 42, Melrose 14 (a border battle that wasn't much of a battle)
Foley 28, Sauk Centre 7
Royalton 20, Browerville 6 (a huge Prairie Conference battle, Tigers' tagged with first loss)
BOLD 14, Paynesville 6 (a battle for 1st place in the West Central South Conf.)
Osakis 30, Upsala-Swanville Area 21 (Osakis remains unbeaten, 6-0)
Montevideo 21, Lac qui Parle Valley 6
Minneota 33, Dawson-Boyd 26 (that had to be a heckuva game!)
Adrian 41, Renville CountY West 14
United North Central 34, K-M-S 7 (K-M-S is 2-4)
New London-Spicer 49, Milaca 6
Little Falls 28, Fergus Falls 12
Sauk Rapids 33, Willmar 27, OT
Minnewaska Area 34, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 0
New London-Spicer 49, Milaca 6
Yellow Medicine East 14, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 6 (A-C-GC is 2-4)

On deck for the Jaguars on Monday night - Volleyball hosts Morris Area, Tennis hosts Annandale

The Jaguars volleyball team hosts a very good Morris Area team tonight at the elementary school. The Tigers are one of the top teams in Sub-Section 3AA-North, with a 14-4 overall record, 7-1 (2nd) West Central South Conference. They went 2-2 at the Hancock Tournament on Saturday, defeating Ortonville and Central Minnesota Christian-Prinsburg, then being defeated by CMCS as well as Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross.

Earlier in the day, the Jaguars girls tennis team hosts another very good team, Annandale, at the high school tennis courts at 4:15. The Cardinals, a Sub-Section 5A-East team, are 9-4 overall.

Saturday, October 03, 2009

It was bound to happen - luckily playoffs are a few weeks out - Jaguars Volleyball drops three of five matches at Willmar Cardinal Classic Invitationa

The Jaguars Volleyball team is now 18-5 overall going into the final stretch of the season. They won in 2-0 matches against Renville County West and Buffalo Lake-Hector, but fell in 2-1 matches against Benson, Willmar, and unfortunately New London-Spicer.

It's the first time B-B-E has lost to NL-S since October 2001, the Sub-Section 6AA-East semi-finals.

Grr!

The upside is, this wasn't the playoffs, and there's still plenty of season left to iron out any wrinkles before Sub-Section 5A-South action begins in late October.

Read more about the tournament in this week's local newspapers and the Sauk Centre Herald.

Random football notes...the last time Osakis was 5-0, the year was 2005 and the Silverstreaks went all the way to the Class A state semi-finals, where they lost to eventual state champion Springfield 34-17. Their only loss of the regular season was to Upsala-Swanville Area, who won in Osakis by a 3-0 score! USA was 2-3 coming into that game and finished 6-4 overall. Osakis finished 11-2. They also advanced to the state semi-finals in 2002.

Browerville is 5-0 for the first time since 2004, when they went 8-0 in the regular season and 10-1 overall after losing 37-6 to Ottertail Central in the Section 6A championship. Browerville actually played in the 6A title game in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 - losing every time.
