Speech!!! CHAMPS!!

Quite a day!! It's been terribly busy in Jaguar Country, with my day beginning at the home elementary wrestling tournament. It was terribly exciting to watch our elementary wrestlers beat New London-Spicer 49-27 in the opening round!!

Fast forward to tonight and I was taking care of getting more coverage going on the B-B-E speech team...check this out!
http://www.bonanzavalleyvoice.com/story/2016/01/28/bbe/b-b-e-speech-team-champs-at-eden-prairie/182.html

In other news from today, and this is not a complete list...the B-B-E fifth grade girls' basketball Jaguars took first place at K-M-S. The 7th & 8th grade girls' basketball Jaguars each took third place in a tournament held at New London-Spicer.

This afternoon at the B-B-E high school, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team lost 64-49 to state-ranked and two-time defending Section 5A champion Browerville/Eagle Valley.

In the second game of the double-header, the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team saw their five-game winning streak crash to a halt after the state-ranked Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers beat them 87-52. The first half was very competitive, but the second half belonged to the seventh-ranked (Class 1A) Tigers, who improve to 16-2 with the win. The Jaguars are 13-7 overall heading into a tough home game this Tuesday (Feb. 2) against Minnewaska Area.

**One important side note: the B-B-E/Paynesville dance teams will perform at halftime of the JV and varsity boys' basketball games on Tuesday. Come out and cheer them on along with our boys' basketball team!

Also, I am pleased to report that the second annual Anthony Tullis Ice Fishing Memorial tournament had a great turnout of people today on Norway Lake. They raised over $1,200 for their scholarship fund. Look for more coverage on that fishing tournament in next week's Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

Overtime...lots of them!!

In rural Howard Lake, the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team is playing the third overtime against the Lakers in a Central Minnesota Conference battle.

The B-B-E girls' basketball team beat visiting Pierz 66-34 after holding a commanding 37-13 lead at halftime. The Jaguars missed nine of their first 10 field goal attempts, and throughout the first 10 minutes or so of the first half the shot chart was ugly to say the least. They picked things up though and poured the oats on the Pioneers before subbing down the entire bench in the final five minutes. Pierz is 4-12 overall and 1-7 in the CMC; the Jaguars are 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the CMC.

On the road in an important Section 5A match-up, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team beat Royalton/Upsala 33-31! They are 11-6 overall with two duals left in the regular season.

**Update: the boys are in a fifth overtime!!!

**Update: the Jaguars found their footing in the closing minute of the fifth OT and are heading home with a memorable 73-68 win!!!! They are 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the Central Minnesota Conference and temporarily have a half-game lead over Pierz and Maple Lake for second place; the Lakers fall to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the CMC. This B-B-E vs. HL-W-W contest was the lone CMC game tonight.

Here's how the final minute played out in the fifth overtime...the Lakers were ahead by one point. Then with 45 seconds left, the Jaguars were up by two. Tanner Heinsius was at the free throw line with 32 seconds left and cashed both shots. With the Lakers furiously trying to get shots off to close the gap, Ryan Illies came up with a huge block. Heinsius later cashed two more free throws for a six-point lead with 8.6 seconds to go, and the Jaguars hung on for the insanely wild and epic win!  They host state-ranked Browerville/Eagle Valley on Saturday at the high school at 5 o'clock; the girls' varsity game is at 3 o'clock. *(JV games, both girls and boys, start at 1:30 p.m. at the high school.)

Quite a night

The Jaguars are off to the races here against Hancock.

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team beat Hancock 69-63 in a battle of the top two teams in Sub-Section 6A-South. The Jaguars led 33-32 in a topsy-turvy first half. That trend played out in the second half with the game hanging in the balance the whole way. After B-B-E took 45-38 lead with 12:35 left, the Owls blew the lid off the basket with a 13-0 run. With 8:30 left, Hancock's junior guard Tyler Reese made two double bonus free throws to put his team ahead 51-45. Over the next 100 seconds, the Jaguars tied the game at 51-51 on field goals by Austin Trustheim, Tanner Heinsius and Ryan Illies.

Hancock took their last lead on a three-point play Reese with 5:50 left, up 54-51. Trustheim's 10-footer put the Jaguars in the lead for good 58-56 with 4:10 to go.

The Jaguars are 11-6 overall; the Owls fall to 9-4.

At Holdingford the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team won 62-54 to improve to 5-2 in the Central Minnesota Conference. I really believe they have to run the table and finish 12-2 in the CMC to have a shot at winning the title. Holdingford is 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the CMC.

At Long Prairie the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team went 2-1 with wins over Border West (score of 48-27) and state-ranked West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville (score of 34-30). Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, a Class 2A pairing, beat the Jaguars 39-26; tough and close losses by decisions at 138, 145 and 220 cost the Jaguars the win.. The Jaguars (9-6 overall) host Sauk Centre-Melrose on Tuesday night, January 26.

Central Minnesota Conference girls' basketball scores on Jan. 22:
Kimball Area 63, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 55 (the Cubs improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the CMC; they are having their best girls' basketball season since 2002-2003, when they beat Hancock 47-41 in the Section 5A championship and advanced to the state tournament)
Eden Valley-Watkins 65, Paynesville Area 47

...and this one was a dandy! Featured in the video below is the sixth grade championship from the B-B-E elementary youth basketball tournament held yesterday. Unfortunately, the Jaguars lost a cliffhanger by an 18-17 score. It was one of the finest youth basketball games I've ever seen. Both teams played hard-nosed basketball.

Slaying the Irish

Final score in boys' basketball action tonight: B-B-E 57, Maple Lake 55! The Jaguars led 25-23 at halftime against the defending conference champions.

State-ranked (#9 Class 2A) Eden Valley-Watkins is still on top all by themselves at 6-0. The Jaguars are 4-3 in the CMC in fourth place by themselves.

It was an interesting night in the CMC! See the scores below.

Dogfight in the conference

The Jaguars provide defense against HL-W-W's senior guard Maggie Miller, who knocked down multiple three-pointers to help counter B-B-E's strong inside game in the first half.

Wow! The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team won 73-71 in overtime tonight against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The score at the end of regulation was 66-66 after the Lakers scored from the right block with two seconds on the clock. The game featured two second-place teams in the Central Minnesota Conference and had the makings of a dogfight from the very beginning. Both teams went hard to the basket and were not afraid to take outside shots when seeing an opening.

The win raised B-B-E's record in the Central Minnesota Conference to 4-1; they are 10-2 overall and have their biggest game of the season on the horizon when they travel to Eden Valley-Watkins next Tuesday, Jan. 19. The Eagles sit in a virtual tie for second place with the Jaguars.

HL-W-W fell to 4-11 overall and 3-2 in the CMC.

Back on track

In spite of shooting poorly from the floor and the free throw line for the third game in a row, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team got back into the win column after beating last-place Maple Lake 52-43 tonight in a Central Minnesota Conference game. The Irish fell to 0-4 in the CMC and 2-7 overall with their seventh loss in a row. The Jaguars, who led 25-18 at halftime, shot an abysmal 47 percent at the free throw line and just 31 percent on field goals. They have a few days of practice to figure out how to make free throws before hosting Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (4-9, 3-1 CMC) next Thursday, Jan. 14. The Lakers won at Pierz tonight 58-47.
Kimball prevailed in their second battle for first place in the CMC when freshmen guard Ashley Schindele drained a three-pointer in the final seconds to lift her team to a 53-51 win over the defending champion Eagles. The Cubs are now 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the CMC in sole possession of first place.

At the eight-team Paynesville tournament, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team hammered their way through a tough field to take third place behind state-rated Litchfield and Sartell-St. Stephen. Five of the 12 Jaguars who competed took first place: Adam Jaeger (138), Isaiah Gilbert (145), Colby Schramel (152), Ben Thompson (195) and Joe Reller (220). Overall, 10 Jaguars placed fourth or better. Nice work!!! They host a CMC triangular that includes HL-W-W and Pierz on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Huskers get the win

Holdingford won tonight's game 68-53 over our visiting B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team. They led 8-1 early and 28-26 at halftime. The Huskers are 8-4 overall (2-2 CMC) and are having their best season since 2005-2006, when they lost in the Section 6AA championship game to Braham. Honestly, the Huskers have had tough seasons ever since with successive losing records. This is definitely a turnaround season.

Next for the Jaguars (6-5 overall) is a home non-conference game against Parkers Prairie (7-5 overall) on Monday. It's a HUGE game with sub-section seeding implications. I consider it a must-win game.

Kimball

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team is losing 29-26 at Kimball with 15:17 left in a Central Minnesota Conference game. At halftime, the Jaguars led 24-22.

Kimball won 61-60. It was a pure heart-breaker. After trailing 49-40 at one point in the second half, the Jaguars took a 60-59 lead with 18 seconds left in the game on a layup by Nicole Wesbur. The Cubs (10-3 overall, 3-0 CMC) scored with eight seconds left, and a shot in the final seconds by B-B-E rimmed out.

After starting the season 8-0, the Jaguars have now lost two straight.
