Gary Fauskee Memorial Scholarship Old Timers tournament is July 14

Mark your calendars for Saturday July 14th during Bonanza Valley Days for the Gary Fauskee Memorial Scholarship Old Timers tournament. The action takes place at Quisberg Park in Brooten from 1 to 4 p.m.
According to one of the event organizers, rumored teams who will be in attendance include the Ole Voice Boys, Miller Wild Acres, a group from Sunburg and the KaDe Shack.
Fauskee is a Brooten High School graduate who became part of the Fauskee Oil Company and was a great friend to anyone who knew him. He passed away last July (2011) after an accident at home.

Jaguars win today's home varsity basketball tournament

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team went 3-0 today in their home varsity tournament in a field of eight strong teams. They edged Maranatha Christian and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game, they won 51-49 in two overtimes against Melrose Area. The second overtime ended in sudden death fashion, and James Kuefler won the tip off for B-B-E, fed Brian Goodwin in the back court to set up the final play of the game. Goodwin shot a pass to Trey Heinsius on the left sideline, and Heinsius went in for a runner on the baseline and drained a shot on the left block to end the game in thrilling fashion.

A shot by James Kuefler puts the Jaguars in the lead in the second half vs. Melrose after they trailed down the stretch...

...and Trey Heinsius hit the game winner in this video clip...the whole game was "ridiculously" entertaining considering it's just summer basketball.

Update on the Cobalt vs. B-B-E school bus accident

Well, it's more of a non-update, since there's nothing to report other than the matter is currently with the office of the Pope County Attorney (Neil Nelson of Glenwood). They are still investigating the accident, and at some point in the future they will release information regarding possible charges and other circumstances surrounding the May 25 accident north of Glenwood.

Both Jaguar girls' golfers have an outstanding finish at the Class A state meet

Both Peyton Miller and Jordan Gruendemann turned in outstanding scores in the final day of the Class A state golf tournament today in Becker. Miller fired an 84, and Gruendemann shot a 96 as both golfers dramatically improved their scores from the first day, and Miller is currently in the running for an All-State finish depending on how the remaining scores look.

Regardless of where they finish in the overall standings, today was a terrific day for the B-B-E Jaguars golf program!

Peyton's finish of a 176 landed her in a tie for 14th place overall in the final Class A overall standings in her second trip to the state meet. Jordan's finish of a 204 brought her to 59th place at a 204 in her first appearance at state. A total of 86 athletes made up the Class A field in girls' golf.

As a seventh grader in 2010, Peyton finished in a three-way tie for 27th place with a two-day score of 191.

Brooten/Belgrade summer rec loses season opener at Willmar 9-5

Austin Young is shown on the mound for the Brooten/Belgrade 5th-6th grade team at Willmar tonight.
In their season opener, the Belgrade/Brooten 5-6 grade summer rec team gave a valiant effort against a much deeper, more experienced Willmar Bluejays team at the Willmar senior high school fields tonight. After the Bluejays spotted the Jaguars a 5-0 lead, they pulled in front over the final few innings in a 9-5 win. The nine Jaguars who suited up for the game gained valuable experience and learned quite a bit from their mistakes.

Elrosa takes down Lake Henry

After taking last year off, the call of the baseball diamond was too great to resist for Aaron Vogt, shown playing at first for the Saints on Friday night against Spring Hill.
The Elrosa Saints handed Lake Henry a 3-2 loss on Sunday afternoon to keep their slim hopes of a Region playoff appearance alive. Brady Weller pitched seven innings (five hits) to pick up the win for the Saints, who improved to 3-5 (4th) in the Stearns County League North standings. Matt Middendorf and Ethan Vogt had two hits each to lead their team at the plate. Lake Henry is 5-4 (2nd) in the SCL-North division.

Elrosa's next action is this Friday, when they host Greenwald in an 8:00pm game at Saints Field. Greenwald picked up their first win of the season against Farming on Sunday by a 5-2 score. The Flames were in second place in the SCL-South before that loss.

Chargers win first meeting of the year with Elrosa

The Spring Hill Chargers were held scoreless in 8 of 9 innings tonight, but the three runs they plated in the third inning were all they needed in a 3-2 win over Elrosa tonight at Saints Field. Ethan Vogt went the distance for the Saints in the loss and pitched a great game against one of the better-hitting lineups in the area.

The Chargers improve to 7-1 (1st) in the Stearns County League North, while the Saints are 2-5 in the league. Elrosa plays at Lake Henry on Sunday at 1:30pm. Spring Hill's next action is on June 17 when New Munich comes to Chargers Field.

Battle for the Keg 2012 Part I is tonight!

First pitch is set for 8pm tonight in Elrosa between the Saints and the Spring Hill Chargers in a classic border battle in the Stearns County League at one of the top baseball diamonds in central Minnesota, Saints Field.

From the Spring Hill Chargers website:
The Chargers have been working on their self defense skills because of the upcoming battle for the most coveted sports trophy, the traveling keg.  The Keg will find itself up in Elrosa Friday night at 8:00 under the lights, and will hopefully make the trip back to its resting grounds in Spring Hill.  The Chargers will be defending the safety of the keg where legend has it not only do the Vogt brothers fight with each other while milking cows, they fight with the keg as well.  The confident Saints were even spotted requesting the song Keg in the Closet in anticipation of winning it back.  You can be sure to find the Chargers and Saints battling it out Friday night.  So take yourself out to the ballgame, buy some peanuts and, well let’s face it, adult beverages because this one is sure to be an instant classic.
