Saints bow out of Region 15C tournament

The Farming Flames came up big in the top of the sixth inning when they plated three runs on a successful suicide squeeze attempt today against the Elrosa Saints. The two amateur baseball teams were vying in an elimination game of the Region 15C tournament at Watkins. The three runs erased a 2-1 Elrosa lead, and the 4-2 lead held up as the Saints saw their season come to a close.

The Saints out-hit the Flames by a wide 11 to 4 margin, but three errors plus 11 stranded baserunners ultimately led to their demise. Payton VanBeck pitched an incredible complete game with 16 strikeouts. I'll update this blog post after I receive the official box score.

Elrosa finishes the season 14-9 overall with a youth-filled lineup. They won the Elite 8 tournament title for the third straight year as well as the Stearns County League North playoff title.

The county fairs for Pope County and Stearns County both conclude today. I've got two videos from Friday at the Stearns County Fair posted at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website: https://shorturl.at/ZV0c7.

Sunday night update...
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Terrace this morning to take in the Chippewa Falls Lutheran church's 150th anniversary worship service. I am getting my 1.54 gigabyte video uploaded tonight from the service. The organizers did a really fantastic job. I am proud of all our area churches! Look for extended coverage of their 150th anniversary worship in the August 8 and possibly August 15 issues of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

It looks like we are set to get another big shot of rain across the next 24 hours. Crazy! This is not a typical time of the year to receive ample rainfall. I know my garden is not complaining about it.

On to the Round of 32 at State! Let's go Saints! (VIDEOS, UPDATES!)

Note: this was updated yet again on Monday morning...see below.

The Elrosa Saints baseball team will play in the second weekend of the 100th Class C amateur state tournament. They earned that right thanks to a walk-off RBI-single by Jackson Peter to defeat Hadley 4-3 in today's opening round game in Dassel.

Peter's base hit was buried in left field, which allowed Andew Weller to score from second base for the game winner. Weller, the leadoff batter for the Saints in the ninth, was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Will VanBeck's sacrifice bunt. Kevin Kuefler drew a walk, and Jackson Peter then drilled his shot over the third baseman's head for the game winner.

*Here's a rough video of the exciting post-game celebration in Dassel!

*Here's a video from the bottom of the 8th inning when the Saints tied the game at 3-3...

Hadley got a two-RBI home run in the top of the fifth inning that gave them a 3-2 lead.

Payton VanBeck got the pitching win in the ninth inning in relief of Cole Fuchs of Cold Spring, who pitched three scoreless innings. Starter Brett Engelmeyer of Greenwald went the first five innings.

*Here's a video featuring the entire top of the 9th inning with VanBeck on the mound:

Next: the Saints play Region 9A champion Minneota next Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with the site to be determined. **UPDATE: the game will be in Litchfield. Further details to come. Video is uploading. I have to put sports aside for part of the evening as I join what is the 'Event of the summer' at the Brooten Pavilion, where the wedding reception is being held for Larry Torkelson and Eva Smith of Sunburg. They got married! And we couldn't be happier for them.

UPDATE: the Spring Hill Chargers have also advanced to the second weekend of state! They toppled Roseau 6-4 tonight in Litchfield to get Region 15C a total of four teams in the final 32 teams left in contention. Congratulations! Ben Welle started for Spring Hill and pitched seven innings and was relieved by Anthony Revermann, who pitched the eighth inning. Lake Henry draftee Grant Ludwig was closer in the ninth. Next for the Chargers: their second round game is on Friday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Delano, where their opponent will be the host Delano Athletics, champions of Region 12A.

New York Mills ended Regal's season with a 3-2 state tournament win in Litchfield after the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. It marked the first state win for New York Mills since 1969.

The Kimball Express defeated Region 9C's runner-up team, the Dumont Saints, by a 4-2 score on Friday in Litchfield to advance. They play Region 8A champion Buckman on Saturday, August 26 at 7 p.m. in Litchfield, a game that follows Elrosa's game with Minneota.

Region 15C champion St. Martin opens their state tournament with the Loretto Larks on Sunday, August 27 at 1:30 p.m. in Litchfield. The Larks were the fourth-place team out of Region 12C, and they beat Luxemburg 8-3 to advance.

State opener is today! (VIDEOS)

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team begins the Class C state tournament today with a first-round game at 1:30 p.m. in Dassel. THe Hadley Buttermakers will provide the competition on which team advances to the Round of 32! The game will be broadcast on KASM 1150 AM of Albany and on their website: http://www.mykasm.com.

*Here's a video from the top of the 9th inning last Saturday in Lake Henry:

In honor of the incredible level of respect and admiration that I have for the Elrosa Saints baseball program, I wanted to share this incredible video recorded at a farmer's market in North Carolina where now-famous farmer and song artist Oliver Anthony drew a crowd of over 1,000 people to hear him sing! This is amazing.

Enjoy for yourself...

Remember that on Friday, June 12, 2020, our Elrosa Saints baseball team displayed their own version of civic disobedience in defiance of Governor Tim Walz when they played a baseball game on a quiet Friday night against the Cold Spring Rockies. I'll never, ever forget that night.

I have to get a new blog post added tonight on the B-B-E girls' tennis team, who fought their way into the win column yesterday on the first day of competition of the fall season. They beat Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area by a 4-3 score.

Updates to follow on this blog post this afternoon.

Game updates...
After one inning, it's a scoreless game.
*After 3 innings, the Buttermakers hold a 1-0 lead. They scored in the top of the second.
**After 5 innings, the Saints are trailing 3-2. Hadley got a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to reclaim the lead.

**After 7 innings, Hadley is ahead 3-2.

**Final: Elrosa 4, Hadley 3. The Saints advance to the Round of 32! Details to follow in a new blog post.

Region 15C baseball continues today (UPDATES)

A note from the publisher's desk...if you can't make it to the region amateur baseball games, I urge you to go to the Pope County Fair! They are having a terrific fair so far, and your attendance and support would be greatly appreciated!

The second day of the Region 15C amateur baseball tournament continues today with the first games being held in Lake Henry. The Elrosa Saints face New Munich at 1:30 p.m. If the Saints win, they play again TONIGHT! Yes, that's right, and that game will be at St. Martin under the Lights at Ray Weber Field.
In the opening game of the tournament last night in St. Martin, Cold Spring won a nailbiter over Spring Hill in 12 innings by a 6-5 score. The Chargers fall to the elimination bracket and play next at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday) to fight to keep their state tournament hopes alive; they face Lake Henry. Cold Spring will play in a state-qualifying game on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Today at Lake Henry, St. Martin beat the host Lakers 2-1 in Saturday's opening game. This was originally the 4 p.m. game, but because of the forecast, these two local teams decided to bump that up to a 9 a.m. start!

In today's second game at Lake Henry and the third game overall of regions, Kimball faces Pearl Lake at 11 a.m. You can listen to the game at KASM's website: http://www.mykasm.com. They are also on the radio at 1150 AM!

Baseball UPDATE: that Pearl Lake vs. Kimball game is still going at 2 p.m., although they are near the 9th inning.  UPDATE at 14:04... Kimball defeated Pearl Lake by a 4-1 score, and they advance to play tonight in St. Martin. Kimball was lifted earlier in the game by a three-run home run by Adam Beyer, which broke a scoreless tie.

Elrosa vs. New Munich updates will be posted in a new blog post.

In county fair news...
A photo gallery with almost 100 pictures from yesterday's activities at the Pope County Fair in Glenwood has been uploaded to the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's SmugMug site. You can find that by clicking on this short link: https://tinyurl.com/2s4wd7rk. You can read a full article on The Voice website that features information on today's activities by clicking here: https://tinyurl.com/3mcezezx. That article has a new video I just added which was recorded last night at the fair.

*Here's a video from last night at the fair:

GREAT news...related to the weather...it appears that they've taken much of the chances for rain out for today and the early evening hours. This bodes well for both baseball and county fair events today! As of now there's an overall 42 percent chance of rain for Brooten.

It's a win! And the Saints are in (VIDEO)

A determined, gritty Greenwald Cubs team came to town today for a border battle to open the Stearns County League North division playoffs. After drawing first blood with one run in the top of the third, the Cubs fell behind 5-1 in the bottom of the third when Gavin Kampsen hit a grand slam home run over the left field fence at Saints Field. His one-out bomb, which sailed 5 to 10 feet above the fence, gave the Saints a 5-1 lead.

**Here's a video featuring Kampsen rounding the bases and being greeted back at the dugout:

Down the stretch, the bats came alive for the Saints, who finished with two doubles and one triple to go with Kampsen's grand slam. Elrosa joins St. Martin as two SCL teams with tickets to the Region 15C tournament in Lake Henry/St. Martin in August.

Final: Elrosa 12, Greenwald 3. Ethan Vogt pitched six innings for the win with five strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs. Ashton Dingmann earned the save in three innings with just one hit, no walks and three strikeouts. Overall, the Saints had 12 hits to 10 for the Cubs.

NEXT: the Saints play in the division championship at noon tomorrow, July 23, at New Munich. Their opponent will be the winner of this afternoon's game between New Munich and Spring Hill. First pitch at the Silverstreaks' stadium is at 2:30 p.m.

At St. Martin last night, the host Martins defeated Richmond 3-2 in walk-off fashion after trailing 2-0 to earn a spot in the region tournament.

UPDATE on my Bonanza Valley Days coverage...we are entering the final week with BVD coverage to publish in the newspaper. The July 27 issue will have additional coverage from the BVD kiddie parade, kids pedal pull, Scouts BSA Waffle Feed, the Miss Brooten program and the grand parade. So far at the newspaper's SmugMug photo gallery, the BVD photo totals is 855 pictures from the big four-day celebration in Brooten. Of that total 371 uploaded photos are from the BVD grand parade. Elrosa Saints win walk-off thriller, Legion Post 288 stays alive in sub-districts

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team has clinched the Stearns County League North division title, the 11th overall in program history. They did so tonight thanks to late-game heroics at the plate combined with speedy baserunning as they edged visiting New Munich by a 3-2 score. Blaine Fischer's RBI-single with no outs scored Will VanBeck from third base for the game winner.

New Munich had just tied the game with one run in the top of the ninth inning. Video from the end of the game is uploading.

Ethan Vogt started for Elrosa, and Will VanBeck was the closer. For New Munich, Ty Reller pitched all nine innings. Each team finished with 7 hits. Jackson Peter hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

*Here's video featuring the bottom of the ninth inning:

That was some rough video, but it's better than nothing. I had my Porsche camera in action for the first time at a night-time baseball game. I did not know what I was doing with it, although I have an idea now on what settings work best under baseball stadium lighting.

NEXT: the regular season concludes for Elrosa with a trip to neighboring rival Spring Hill on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. contest.

Also, the Region 15C tournament will be hosted in Lake Henry with night games in St. Martin.

In a sub-district elimination game at Benson, the Brooten American Legion Post No. 288 baseball team defeated Benson/Hancock 4-1 to advance to the championship game. Luke Dingmann pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. They play tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Minnewaska Area high school where they face Glenwood/Lowry. They need to win twice to advance to the district tournament.

COMING UP! The 121st annual Stearns County Fair is coming in Sauk Centre from July 26 to July 30. They will advertise in the Bonanza Valley Voice across the next two weeks.

REMEMBER: Elrosa plays tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:30 p.m. in Meire Grove in a seeding game. If they win, they will be the No. 2 seed to the Class C state tournament out of Region 15C.

Region 15C baseball updates

We have rain delay changes at the Region 15C baseball tournament in Meire Grove today.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the first game (the 11 a.m. game) was still going in the ninth inning. The second game, which is the "1 o'clock game" is likely to get going at about 3 p.m.

The Elrosa vs. Spring Hill game will likely start at about 5 p.m. today in Meire Grove. More updates to come. I am going to make a swing over to the Pope County Fair before heading back into Stearns County!

On Friday night, the Richmond Royals won 7-2 against Watkins in the first game of the region tournament. That game was played in Elrosa.

*Update: the Elrosa game started shortly after 5 p.m. against Spring Hill. Starting for Elrosa is Payton VanBeck, while Anthony Revermann is Spring Hill's starting pitcher.

In the first game played today, St. Martin defeated New Munich. All games are being broadcast on KASM 1150 AM radio and at "mykasm-dot-com" online.

Final score: Elrosa 4, Spring Hill 1. The Saints play at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow back in Meire Grove.
