GAME DAY at STATE! In Mcleod County ...with a rain delay

This is a BIG game day for the Bonanza Valley area as we support the Elrosa Saints and Regal Eagles amateur baseball teams at the Class C state tournament. The state openers are today for both teams in Hutchinson. The games are played at Veterans Memorial Field near the North Fork Crow River.

The Elrosa Saints were supposed to face Windom at 1:30 p.m. Before that, the Regal Eagles were to play at 11 a.m. against the Dumont Saints. However, all of central Minnesota took 2+ inches of rain this morning, so there is a game delay in place. The Regal vs. Dumont game is probably going to start at around noon. This shifts Elrosa's game back to probably a 2:30 p.m. start.

Both games are on 1150 AM in Albany: http://www.mykasm.com. Further updates to follow at this blog post after noon.

I'm slowly getting to extended August Fest coverage. Two videos from August Fest can be found at the "News" collection at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's website: https://www.bonanzavalleyvoice.com/section/news.

UPDATES...
It's 2:08 p.m., and Regal is entering the 9th inning at the plate. The score is 0-0.

Final: Regal 2, Dumont 0 in 11 innings! Crazy.

Elrosa's game started at 3:22 p.m.

After 3 innings, Windom has a 2-1 lead.

After 5 innings, Windom has a 4-2 lead.

Final: Windom 6, Elrosa 2. That's all she wrote.

The Pirates won the Region 10C title with a 3-1 win over the Milroy Irish at Milroy's Irish Yard on Friday.

Region baseball continues in Spring Hill (VIDEO, UPDATES)

In a seeding game at Spring Hill today, the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team is facing Regal with the No. 3 seed to state up for grabs. Just like all Region 8C games, this game is being aired on KASM 1150 AM of Albany: http://www.mykasm.com.

Regal extended a 1-0 lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning while facing starter Hayden Sobiech. Luke Dingmann took over pitching duties in the fifth.

Josh Beier hit a three-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 5-0 lead for the Eagles. In the top of the 7th inning, the Saints were unable to score with a deficit on the scoreboard of 6-0.

Brayden Skindelien walked with an RBI to extend Regal's lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning. Regal's leadoff batter in the 7th hit a solo home run. In the bottom of the 7th, Regal scored twice on one hit with no errors and 3 left on base. Elrosa reliever Luke Illies recorded 3 strikeouts but also issued 4 walks.

In the top of the 8th, pinch hitter Kevin Kuefler drew a two-out walk. A throwing error then got Jackson Peter on base. Ashton Dingmann then punched a three-run home run to bust up the shutout. That at bat by Dingmann marked the first time that Elrosa had 2 runners on at the same time. A pop fly ended the top of the 8th inning with no runners stranded.

In the bottom of the 8th, Wyatt Steffensen took over pitching duties for Elrosa, and he fired a strikeout against the first batter he faced. Regal's next batter singled, and Steffensen then struck out Shane Radermacher.

Here's a video featuring action in the bottom of the 6th inning yesterday against Starbuck:

In the top of the 9th inning, Elrosa left two stranded as they went down on a strikeout for the game's final out. Final score: Regal 8, Elrosa 3. The Eagles continue at regions with another seeding game today against Farming. For the game, Regal had 12 runners stranded, while Elrosa left 6 on base.

As reported yesterday, Regal defeated Roscoe 6-4 to advance to state in their final elimination game. The Eagles and Rangers faced eachother in the opening game at Spring Hill yesterday.

As for the Class C amateur baseball tournament...
The state tournament begins next weekend with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (August 15,16,17) across four sites: Gaylord, Hutchinson, Brownton and Glencoe. The state brackets will be announced after 7 p.m. tonight, so for now, we don't know exactly when or where Elrosa plays their state opener. Additional state information is available at http://www.minnesotabaseballassociation.org/tournaments.

In other Region 8C games...
Paynesville won the Region 8C title by defeating Farming last night. The Pirates will be playing in the state tournament for the second time in program history.

Region baseball (UPDATES, VIDEO) SAINTS to STATE!

With 4 innings complete, Starbuck holds a 1-0 lead over Elrosa. These teams are battling at Spring Hill this afternoon in a Region 8C elimination game.

An incredible throw by Will Van Beck from left field to home base cut Starbuck down to end the 7th inning. Catcher Blaine Fischer applied the tag at home for the 3rd out. The score is tied at 1-1.

The Belgrade August Fest is also going strong at Belgrade.

From Spring Hill...here we go!
Down to their final out in the top of the 9th inning, the Elrosa Saints gained a 4-2 lead on a three-run bomb by Jackson Peter! Elrosa now needs to hold Starbuck in the bottom of the 9th to advance to state!

In the bottom of the 9th, the Stars got their leadoff batter on base on an error.

Final score: Elrosa 4, Starbuck 3. The Saints are state bound! Ethan Vogt pitched 7 strong innings to keep the Saints in the game. Will VanBeck was closer and recorded the win.

Here's a video from the top of the 6th inning today:

Elrosa Saints stay alive at Region 8C (VIDEOS)

After trailing 1-0 going into the second inning today against New Munich, the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team put up a 5-spot in the top of the second inning and stayed alive in the Region 8C tournament with a 10-4 win.

Will VanBeck started for Elrosa and earned the pitching win, and Wyatt Steffensen pitched in relief. Riley Meyer was closer.

Next: the Saints travel back to Spring Hill next Saturday (August 9) for another elimination contest. They play at 1:30 p.m. against Starbuck. It is also a state-qualifying game, so the stakes are huge!

Here's a video from the top of the 4th inning yesterday against Regal:

And here's another video from the Regal game...

Action in the top of the 5th inning...

Today's games in Spring Hill included a light drizzle/mist combination that delivered light precipitation throughout the day. The rainfall made conditions very tough during the first game today, an elimination game that featured Roscoe taking on the host Chargers. Roscoe won 12-6 to advance to next weekend's action.

In today's lone state-qualifying game played in Spring Hill, the Farming Flames edged Regal 3-2 to punch their ticket to the big show. The Regal Eagles play next Saturday, August 9 at 11 a.m. against Roscoe in an elimination game. Farming will make back-to-back appearances at state after also advancing last year.

Saints survive the Rangers

The Saints win! Hooray!

In the top of the 10th inning, Luke Dingmann led off with a double and later scored the game-winning run on a successful suicide squeeze bunt by Will VanBeck. In the bottom of the 10th, Elrosa closer Ashton Dingmann got a ground ball and two strikeouts to close out the win.

Elrosa Saints stung in 9th inning at Regal

A late 7-6 lead in the 9th inning could not hold up for the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team on Friday night. Under the lights of Buddy Beier stadium in Regal, the host Eagles plated 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th for a walk-off 8-7 exhibition win. Pitching for Elrosa were Riley Meyer (starter), Torii Johnson and Luke Dingmann. The Saints out-hit the Eagles 8 to 7. Casey Lenarz was 2-for-4 for Elrosa, and Will VanBeck was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI.

The Saints (5-3 overall) jump back into Stearns County League action with a North division contest at New Munich on Sunday, June 1. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. This game will be broadcast online at http://www.midmnsports.com.

Sunday afternoon update: the New Munich Silverstreaks led 3-0 after two innings. Through 4 1/2 innings, the score is 3-0. Both teams have 4 hits so far. Elrosa's starter is Will VanBeck.

In the top of the 7th inning, Elrosa came up empty on a bases loaded rally and still trail 3-0.

Final score: New Munich 3, Elrosa 0. Next: the Saints (5-4 overall) travel to Paynesville this week Wednesday (June 3) for an exhibition game against the Pirates, a County Line League team. First pitch is at 7 p.m. After that, their next game is an SCL game on Friday, June 6 at 8 p.m. on the home diamond against St. Martin.

In high school baseball news...
On Saturday in Marshall, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers baseball team suffered their first loss of the season. In the Section 3AA winner's bracket, the Tigers were manhandled by Luverne in a 16-5 loss. Now 21-1 overall, they are in the elimination bracket and face long-time rival New London-Spicer on Monday, June 2. The game site is to-be-determined, and first pitch between the Wildcats and Tigers is set for 5 p.m. UPDATE: the Region 3A officials need to be highly commended for their efforts at securing a game site much closer than Marshall for the MA/CA vs. NL-S game. While it could almost be considered a home game for NL-S, the game on Monday is at Paynesville's diamond at their high school. This is a far better drive for MA/CA fans than hauling down to Marshall!

NL-S is 14-8 overall. They went 11-4 in the Wright County West Conference, which was good for a tie for second place with Glencoe-Silver Lake. Rockford (18-4, 13-2) was the WC-West champion this spring. G-SL is in the Section 5AA winner's bracket final (the 5AA semifinal), and they face No. 1-seeded Providence Academy (16-1) on Monday in Litchfield.

For the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team, they travel to Chizek Field in Morris on Monday, June 2 to battle in the Section 6A elimination bracket. They play at 11 a.m. against Breckenridge. If the Jaguars win, they play again in Morris at 4 p.m. that same day.

The game-winner was scored in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 10th. Dylan Gertken's RBI-single scored Ethan Meyer from third base to end the game.

Anthony Revermann started for Spring Hill and pitched 5 innings while giving up 6 hits and 2 runs. Elrosa Saints start 2-0 (VIDEO)

Thanks to multiple outstanding pitching performances both yesterday and today, the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team has a 2-0 record, and it's not even May yet! On Saturday in an exhibition game in Elrosa, the Saints defeated Starbuck 7-0.

The Brooten city council meets in regular session tomorrow night, Monday, at 7 p.m. The meeting agenda can be found at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's editor's blog by clicking here: https://shorturl.at/ulxXf.

Monday afternoon update:
The weather forecast forced the cancellation/postponement of JV golf and varsity/JV fastpitch action today. As it turned out, the forecast did not pan out, and sunny skies with breezy 75 degree temperatures was what we had outdoors in the evening. Also, in Brooten, I recorded about 1.5" of rain in my rain guage.

Also! The B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch team has risen to the top of the Sub-Section 3A-North standings on the QRF. They are No. 28 out of all Class 1A teams, and Lac qui Parle Valley sits at No. 29. The Jaguars hold a 6-2 record, while the Eagles are 5-2.

Scheduling note for the fastpitch team: this week Tuesday, the Jaguars will host a doubleheader. They face Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at 4 p.m., and the second game features the Jaguars taking on Paynesville Area at approximately 6 p.m. More to follow after the Brooten city council meeting.

Saints bow out of Region 15C tournament

The Farming Flames came up big in the top of the sixth inning when they plated three runs on a successful suicide squeeze attempt today against the Elrosa Saints. The two amateur baseball teams were vying in an elimination game of the Region 15C tournament at Watkins. The three runs erased a 2-1 Elrosa lead, and the 4-2 lead held up as the Saints saw their season come to a close.

The Saints out-hit the Flames by a wide 11 to 4 margin, but three errors plus 11 stranded baserunners ultimately led to their demise. Payton VanBeck pitched an incredible complete game with 16 strikeouts. I'll update this blog post after I receive the official box score.

Elrosa finishes the season 14-9 overall with a youth-filled lineup. They won the Elite 8 tournament title for the third straight year as well as the Stearns County League North playoff title.

The county fairs for Pope County and Stearns County both conclude today. I've got two videos from Friday at the Stearns County Fair posted at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website: https://shorturl.at/ZV0c7.

Sunday night update...
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Terrace this morning to take in the Chippewa Falls Lutheran church's 150th anniversary worship service. I am getting my 1.54 gigabyte video uploaded tonight from the service. The organizers did a really fantastic job. I am proud of all our area churches! Look for extended coverage of their 150th anniversary worship in the August 8 and possibly August 15 issues of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

It looks like we are set to get another big shot of rain across the next 24 hours. Crazy! This is not a typical time of the year to receive ample rainfall. I know my garden is not complaining about it.

Saints suffer tough loss to open regions

A few county fair updates were posted at the end of this blog post on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team fell into the elimination bracket of the Region 15C tournament tonight with a tough-luck 10-8 loss to Pearl Lake. They trailed 10-4 before scoring four unanswered runs to make for an interesting final stretch. Two stranded runners in the bottom of the ninth inning was the outcome of their final at bat, however, as they now play to stay alive with an 11 a.m. game on Sunday back in Watkins. (Sunday, August 4).

The county fair activity in Sauk Centre and Glenwood is currently at its peak! I spent about three hours this afternoon at the Stearns County Fair in Sauk Centre, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The mercury raced to nearly 90 degrees this afternoon. It was HOT! Officially, the high temperature today in Brooten was 88 degrees. We are blessed with tremendous county fairs in central Minnesota. This is something we should all be VERY proud about! REMEMBER: three county fairs are advertised in this week's Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper! I hope you have a copy to read for yourself!

Additional updates to this blog post will be added on Saturday morning.

Saturday night updates...
The Elrosa Saints will play either St. Martin or Spring Hill in a Region 15C elimination game on Sunday, August 4 in Watkins starting at 11 a.m. The Region 15C opener for St. Martin and Spring Hill took place at 3:30 p.m. today. Results are not yet available but will be posted here later tonight. Elrosa faces the loser of that game.

Okay! So I got some bad info and did not check the brackets...the Saints will play Farming or Cold Spring on Sunday in the elimination game. I am struggling to find updated brackets and scores.

Finally! I found the correct Twitter page to get scores. In the second game last night (Friday), the Cold Spring Rockies defeated Farming 8-6 in a terrific ball game. The Farming Flames are who the Saints will play tomorrow in the elimination game. In the 6 p.m. game tonight, the Cold Spring Rockies faced Pearl Lake in the first state-qualifier of Region 15C.

The Watkins Clippers defeated Richmond in their region opener today. I do not have a final score on that.

The Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website has a web article (just a video) added today...you can see that by clicking here: https://shorturl.at/znd9V. Now it's time to head to the Pope County Fair for the second time of the day. My family and I will be taking in the Pope County Cattlemen's Association supper. It will be great! Later tonight, the Sedan/Terrace-based band Wasted Time will be the feature entertainment at the fair in Glenwood.

Here's Brady Nelson of Brooten at the end of his run through the tractor pull at the Pope County Fair on Saturday night:

Brady Nelson is a 2019 graduate of B-B-E high school. He was driving a John Deere "G" tractor that had a tremendous pull. I was recording the pull, and for a reason I can't explain, my camera stopped recording in the middle of it. I hit record again after his tractor had stopped. Unfortunately, I did not record when he "dug down" just after it appeared that the tractor was stopping roughly 30 yards short of a full pull. The file on my card was corrupted, so all I had was this little short clip at the end. It's weird how technology can fail you in ways you don't see coming!

On Sunday morning, I'll be in Terrace at Chippewa Falls Lutheran church for their 150th anniversary of the church's founding in Pope County.
