Allisa Knight broke the school record in the triple jump. *Update: she earned nice hardware with a fourth-place medal!

**Update: Kyle Felling is in rare company as he is headed to state in three events! He took second in the long jump, and he just won the Section 6A 400-meter dash. He took second in the 200 dash to advance in that event.

In addition to all of that, the boys' 4x400 relay squad placed fifth to earn medals. In the pole vault, eighth-grader Tyler Jensen had a terrific day while breaking his personal record of 11 feet, three inches. Jensen earned a section medal with a fifth-place finish.

Section golf

Three B-B-E golfers have advanced from Section 5A to the Class 1A state golf meet. They are Jacqueline Gossen, Jaden Gossen and Jayden Miller. It will be Jaden Gossen's third trip to state. For Miller, it will be his first state trip. He is the first boys' golfer to get to state since Corey Tonn did it in 2010.

In other news...on Wednesday, the fastpitch season for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg came to a close in a 7-2 loss to Camden Conference rival Lac qui Parle Valley in the elimination bracket of Section 3A.

I looked at the Section 6AA fastpitch playoffs, and I noticed that Holdingford is one of four teams remaining in contention. They are in the elimination bracket and face St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday to stay alive.

In Section 3A baseball, K-M-S defeated Minneota 8-0 on Wednesday to advance to the winner's bracket final game. That will be played on Saturday at noon in Milroy.

Successful baseball opener

Not season opener...but rather playoff opener!

The No. 2-seeded B-B-E Jaguars baseball team defeated No. 7-seeded St. John's Prep 6-3 in the Sub-Section 6A-South quarterfinals tonight in Elrosa. The Jaguars scored three runs in the second inning and two more in the third for a 5-0 lead. The Johnnies (3-11) put up three runs in the top of the fourth, and the Jaguars added one final run in the bottom of that frame for the final score.

Now 10-10 overall, the Jaguars advance to the semifinals and play either West Central Area or Upsala/Swanville Area on Thursday in Morris. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Chizek Field ball park located north of the University of Minnesota-Morris campus.

Win or lose, the Jaguar will play again at approximately 5 p.m. in either the winner's or loser's bracket of Section 6A.

**Update: in other sub-section baseball games, No. 4-seeded Ortonville ended No. 5-seeded Hancock's season in a 7-1 win. Also, West Central Area defeated USA 6-0 to advance to play our Jaguars on Thursday.

And a quick shout out to Paynesville's baseball team as they remain in the winner's bracket of Section 3AA. They beat Pipestone Area 3-1 tonight. I believe they are now two wins from state.

And! More props for the Central Minnesota Conference! Holdingford, seeded No. 12 in Section 6AA, bounced No. 5-seeded Sauk Centre from the playoffs by a 4-2 score tonight. Great job, Huskers!

Also, good luck to the B-B-E Jaguars girls' golf team and also two members of the B-B-E Jaguars boys' golf team as they compete in the Section 5A finals tomorrow at Eagle Creek golf course in Willmar.

In the other loser's bracket game of Section 6A, Wheaton/Herman-Norcross won 10-9 over Frazee after they trailed 9-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. W/HN and Browerville play in another elimination game tonight. The winner of that game will do no worse than third place in Section 6A.

Sub-section baseball playoffs

The field is set for the Sub-Section 6A-South baseball playoffs, which begin on Tuesday, May 29.

The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team caught enough breaks with what happened with other top-tier teams in the sub-section while getting the necessary wins of their own to climb to the No. 2 spot just in time for the QRF seeding on Saturday. With a 9-10 overall record, the Jaguars have their sights set on a deep playoff run just as they've done in 2016 and 2017. This year they have every bit of confidence that they can go even deeper. The best playoff finish they've had in school history came in 2016, when they took third place in Section 6A.

This year the Jaguars host St. John's Prep in the sub-section quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 29 with a 5 p.m. start at Saints Field in Elrosa.

If they beat the Johnnies in the first round, they advance to the semifinals that will be played at the Chizek Field park in Morris on Thursday, May 31 with a 2:30 p.m. start. Win or lose, they have a second game to follow at 5 p.m. with an opponent to-be-determined. The remaining playoff dates in Section 6A are June 5, June 7 and June 8.

2018 Sub-Section 6A-South baseball seedings:1. Border West (12-3)
2. B-B-E (9-10)
3. West Central Area (11-5)
4. Ortonville (8-6)
5. Hancock (8-11)
6. Upsala/Swanville Area (5-13)
7. St. John's Prep (3-10)

New York Mills (15-3) is the No. 1 seed in Sub-Section 6A-North. The QRF scale has them sitting at No. 5 in Class 1A of Minnesota, which has 120 teams. B-B-E is ranked No. 27 in the last QRF calculations. Border West, the regular season Pheasant Conference champion (10-2) is ranked No. 19. That is a first-year baseball coop made up of players from Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Wheaton Area and Herman-Norcross high schools.

Fastpitch playoffs - updates!

This post will be updated on Thursday night with updates from Minnewaska Area high school.

Final score in game one: West Central Area 7, B-B-E 3. The Jaguars trailed 4-3 after four-and-a-half innings.

Next: an elimination bracket game against Ortonville. The game should start at around 17:50.

Update: heading into the fifth inning, the Trojans are ahead 2-1.

In the winner's bracket game, WCA had a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning.

**Here's video from the bottom of the sixth inning...it's rough footage! But the Jaguars scored two runs in this clip to make it a 4-3 game. The third run came in by Josie Knutson on Kaylee Torgerson's RBI-single to center field.

***Final score! B-B-E 5, Ortonville 4. The Jaguars won their seventh game of the season in dramatic fashion by scoring two runs in both of their final two at bats!! Up next: they play in another elimination game next Tuesday back at Minnewaska Area high school. Spread the word so we get a huge crowd out there to cheer them on deeper into the playoffs!!

With the 1-1 mark tonight, the Jaguars are 7-15 overall. They'll play a fourth postseason game for the first time since 2008. In the 2007 and 2008 seasons, the Jaguars played five playoff games each year. In 2008, they started the postseason 3-0 while winning B-B-E's only sub-section or district championship in fastpitch.

It's important to note!!! This team, or basically most of the roster of this B-B-E team, earned a co-championship during the regular season of summer league last year. In the league playoffs, they finished in second place as well. They undoubtedly a championship-caliber team. I believe in them! They need to continue believing in themselves. They can do this!!!

Ortonville's season comes to a close with a 5-15 mark. Seeded No. 6 in Sub-Section 6A-South, the Trojans earned an upset win over neighboring rival and No. 3-seeded Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in the quarterfinals. C-G-B won both contests in the regular season over Ortonville during Pheasant Conference play.

I learned that West Central Area won by a final score of 7-3 over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross to remain in the winner's bracket. WCA is 19-4 overall, while W/H-N continues into next week's action with a record of 12-9.

**Late Thursday night update: the next opponent for the Jaguars will be Browerville. The Jaguars and Tigers will square off in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29 at Minnewaska Area high school. Browerville is 14-7 overall after going 1-1 in tonight's action in Sub-Section 6A-North. They defeated Brandon/Evansville 7-5 in their first game before losing 5-0 to top-seeded and defending section and state champion New York Mills (22-1).

Browerville is the No. 2-seeded team in Sub-Section 6A-North. They went 6-2 in Prairie Conference action while winning the South division title in their conference. B-B-E and Browerville last met during MSHSL spring fastpitch action on April 13, 2017, when the Tigers defeated the visiting Jaguars 7-6.

Also in Sub-Section 6A-North, Frazee ended Brandon/Evansville's season with a 5-0 elimination bracket win. The Hornets (11-12 overall) face W/HN in an elimination game at the same time and same location as the B-B-E vs. Browerville game next Tuesday. Brandon/Evansville finishes the season 15-6 overall. They were 12-2 in the Pheasant Conference while taking first place. WCA was runners-up in the Pheasant Conference, also 12-2 in the league.

More info to come.

The B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch team won a sub-section quarterfinal game for the first time since 2010 after they defeated No. 4-seeded Upsala 6-3 tonight. It was the Sub-Section 6A-South quarterfinals, and the Jaguars (6-14) advance to the semifinal round on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Minnewaska Area high school. The opponent will be No. 1-seeded West Central Area (17-4). Also noteworthy: the Jaguars are now in the double-elimination portion of the playoffs. Win or lose, they will play a second game on Thursday night at Minnewaska Area. Of course, I'd MUCH prefer they stay in the winner's bracket!

In the Sub-Section 6AA-West fastpitch playoffs, No. 4-seeded Royalton ended No. 5-seeded Paynesville's season with a 9-5 win. In the east half of Section 6AA, Pierz defeated Milaca 13-3 in five innings to advance to the semifinals.

Four losses

An 0-4 mark was the overall outcome for the Central Minnesota Conference doubleheaders held tonight for our B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch and baseball teams. At Eden Valley-Watkins, the fastpitch team lost both games. At home against Pierz, the baseball team also went 0-2 in losses by 2-0 and 9-1 scores.

It was a tough night indeed, as both teams had eyes set on going 2-0 while solidifying their odds at earning home playoff action. As of now, that remains to be seen.

Next: the baseball team (5-8) hosts Eden Valley-Watkins on Thursday, while the fastpitch team travels to Upsala that same night. Both outings are doubleheaders.

In game two, the Jaguars lost 8-5 after the Cubs scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie.

In a CMC girls' golf meet, the B-B-E Jaguars won by a healthy 12-stroke margin over front-runner Osakis (172 to 184). Now the Jaguars trail the Silverstreaks by seven strokes with three meets in the book.

At Kimball, the B-B-E Jaguars fastpitch team lost two CMC games to the Cubs.

More to follow later.

3,000 words

The finishing touches have been put on a 3,035-word school board story highlighting the interview of Mr. Walsh of Hutchinson, who has agreed to take the position of B-B-E superintendent.

I don't know if it's possible to get the whole story in the layout this week, but I'll know a couple hours from now!

Here's random thoughts worth sharing from the meeting notes:

"If you start off knowing you don't have enough time or money in your system, then you become really good at saving time and money."

And...

Walsh asked what is 'awesome' at B-B-E, and Brian Knight replied, "We are a family. We're like brothers and sisters. We don't always get along, but we miss each other if we don't see each other."
