What an awesome finish for two members of the Jaguars girls' golf team today at the Class A state golf meet in Becker. Junior Amy Knutson finished in a two-way tie for 10th overall by carding a 44 and a 43 for a two-day total of 180. Not far behind in the totals was teammate Peyton Miller, who finished with a 191 after carding a 46 and 50 today. In the final standings, Miller finished in a three-way tie for 27th. Both moved up in the standings from the Day 1 results.

The Class A boys golf meet was called on Thursday due to the inclement weather coming through central Minnesota. The scores from Day 1 stood as the final results. Ortonville, the Section 5A team champion, won the state title by a 321-311 stroke margin over runner-up Southwest Christian of Chaska.

More on that will follow later.

A great day on the links results in three Jaguars' golfers advancing to the Class A State Tournament - the most ever for B-B-E in one season

Corey Tonn in action at the Sub-Section 5A-North meet on May 28; he placed 5th at the Section 5A meet today.

Senior Corey Tonn, junior Amy Knutson, and seventh grader Peyton Miller all advanced from the Section 5A meet today to the Class A state golf tournament.

Tonn is the first Jaguars' boys golfer to advance to state since 2005, when then-senior Steven Hurst went in the two-class format and finished 7th individually.

Also, for the third straight year, the Jaguars' girls golf team will be represented at the state tournament. In 2008, Megan Herickhoff and Whitney Bertram both competed at state; in 2009, Bertram went for the second time.

  • Top finishers for the Jaguars at the Section 5A tournament in Benson:
Corey Tonn carded an 80, good for 5th overall on the boys' side
Peyton Miller carded a 91, good for 4th overall on the girls' side
Amy Knutson carded a 95 - it avenges the "narrow miss" she endured as a freshmen, when she missed out on going to state by one stroke at the Section 5A meet in '08.

The 2010 Class A state golf tournament will take place at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, MN, on Wednesday-Thursday, June 16-17. On both days, tee-off times are at 7:30am.

Jaguars' boys and girls golfers tee off this morning at the Benson Golf Course in the Section 5A meet

The Jaguars' boys golf team has a good chance at advancing to the state tournament, which would be a first in B-B-E school history.

Meanwhile, two members of the Jaguars' girls golf team are competing at sections as well. Junior Amy Knutson and seventh grader Peyton Miller will compete for a chance to go to state. Knutson is in her second trip to the Section 5A tournament, as she went as a freshmen with the Jaguars girls golf team, who were sub-section runners-up in 2008.

By 4:00pm I will post who is advancing to the state tournament.

Section 5A girls' fastpitch championship:
Barnum 3, Osakis 0

Section 6A girls' fastpitch championship:
Menahga 1, Parkers Prairie 0 (Panthers narrowly miss out on advancing to 3 state tournaments this year - they went in volleyball last fall and took 3rd in basketball in March)...making it tougher was the fact that the Panthers swept Menahga on April 27 in a Park Region double-header. Menahga takes an 11-14 overall record into the state tournament next week

Section 6AA girls' fastpitch championship:
Rocori 5, St. Cloud Cathedral 4 (10 innings)

In their season opener, the Jaguars fastpitch team loses 7-6 in nine innings at Osakis - That's harsh!

The Jaguar fastpitch infield gathers at the pitcher's circle prior to the start of the bottom of the fifth inning.

Senior Anna Marthaler crosses home plate after Raeann Sorenson's RBI-single brought her home for the Jaguars' fifth run of the game. They led 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning at this point.

What a tough loss for the squad.

The host Silverstreaks scored a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win. Sophomore Michelle Sanders took the pitching loss, going the distance while giving up three walks and two earned runs. She scattered seven hits and earned two strikeouts.

For Osakis, Sabrina Zimmel earned six strikeouts while scattering six B-B-E hits and giving up five walks and five earned runs.

Osakis improves to 4-0 overall. Their third victory of the season came at Kimball Area last Friday afternoon with a 9-3 final score. You can read about that game here at Vikinglandsports.com: http://vikinglandsports.com/newsarticle.php?yid=0910&nid=37207

Up next for the Jaguars fastpitch team: this Thursday, April 15, they host another sub-section rival, Browerville, in their home opener.

The Tigers (0-1) were crushed by Osakis 21-2 in five innings on April 8. The score of that game was actually 21-2 after four innings. That still does not mean, of course, that Browerville should be taken lightly.

A photo gallery from the game has been uploaded to the Sauk Centre Herald's website: http://Saukherald.Mycapture.com

The Jaguars boys golf team took third place at the Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins Invitational on Monday. They carded a 374, behind Pierz's 349 and first-place Delano's 326.

The Jaguars girls golf team finished in fifth place with a 467.

Area baseball results:
