Jaguars win again! (VIDEO)

The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team continues their deep run in the Section 6A playoffs and is moving on to Thursday after they beat Ashby 8-3 tonight at Minnewaska Area high school.

The Jaguars led 6-0 after two innings. Ashby finishes a terrific season with a 19-4 record.

Updates to follow.

**UPDATE: the Jaguars (14-11) play next on Thursday in another elimination game. The opponent will be New York Mills, and they play at 2:30 p.m. at Minnewaska Area High School. Spread the word! Let's get a huge crowd there! I don't have further information on the Section 6A bracket, as they haven't been updated yet as of 7:30 p.m. tonight. I am assuming that New York Mills lost to K-M-S in their section semifinal (winner's bracket) game today.

*Here's video from the bottom of the sixth inning last Thursday in Morris:

In that game in Morris, the Jaguars were battling state-ranked and once-beaten Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in a winner's bracket game of the tournament. The Fighting Saints won 4-1 to advance. B-B-E has been battling their way through the elimination bracket since that night, and they have their eyes now set on New York Mills in the final playback game. If they beat NYM on Thursday, they will face K-M-S in the opening game of the Section 6A championship series. More on that to come tomorrow.

New York Mills is 19-3 overall after they lost 2-0 today to K-M-S in the winner's bracket final (Section 6A semifinals).  The Fighting Saints are 21-1 overall.

Coach Van Beck talks to his Elrosa defense during the top of the 5th inning against K-M-S tonight.

At the Sinclair Lewis Days Little League tournament in Sauk Centre, teams from B-B-E and Elrosa earned wins today on an absolutely fabulous day for youth baseball. The B-B-E Jaguars defeated Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 7-1 in their opener before losing to a loaded Osakis team in the semifinals. The Elrosa Saints beat Sauk Centre Maroon 6-3, then faced Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg tonight and won 8-1.

Once it's done processing on YouTube, click here to see a video of the last two outs recorded between Elrosa and K-M-S tonight, with the Saints turning a double play (second baseman unassisted to first base):

Speaking of baseball, tomorrow is a big day for area teams!

Summer sports

Aspen Peterson pitched the last four innings of tonight's Babe Ruth game against Waite Park.

Ben Schumann, who was B-B-E's starting pitcher tonight, had his share of hits in the game.

Summer sports seasons are heating up in Jaguar Country. Last night I watched some 5th-6th grade baseball and some 3rd-4th grade slowpitch softball. Tonight it was 7th-8th grade Babe Ruth baseball, and on Thursday I'll watch some B-B-E Legion baseball at the high school JV diamond.

Playing catch up

As I'm now buried in the midst of Sinclair Lewis Days activities in Sauk Centre, including a Little League tournament that has Elrosa and Belgrade/Brooten teams included, I'm finally getting caught up on uploading Bonanza Valley Days photos from last weekend.

Here's the link to day two activities:

By the way, great job to the Belgrade/Brooten 5th-6th grade baseball team as they defeated Opole 6-1 in their first game of the Sinclair Lewis Days baseball tournament in Sauk Centre this afternoon. In round two, they played a great game but lost 10-3 to Elrosa.

Elrosa plays in the championship on Sunday at 1:30pm against either Osakis or Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

It was a beautiful night for baseball!

'Boys of summer' playing plenty of baseball

Local baseball teams are as numerous as they can be in a small community like B-B-E. We've got numerous teams for kids age third grade up through college age...and of course amateur ball for the young and young at heart.

Players on the B-B-E 5th/6th grade traveling team gather in the dug out after their game last Saturday morning in Elrosa during the 2nd annual Saints Wood Bats tournament.

I would be hard-pressed to think of a better place for kids to be in the summer than on a baseball or softball diamond.

If you are looking for some plans on Saturday, make tracks to Elrosa to watch the Saints play Raymond and St. Mathias in amateur baseball action. They play Raymond at noon, with the second game to follow at about 2:30pm.

Peterson is third at Pitch, Hit and Run Regional contest

Peterson with his President's Award for Academic Excellence, given to him at yesterday's elementary awards program. He is one of only seven members of his class of 58 students to earn the Gold-level Presidential Academic award. Four also earned the Silver-level award.

Aspen Peterson, an incoming seventh grader (Class of 2019) at B-B-E, finished third at today's Regional Pitch, Hit and Run contest in Foley. He just missed out on an automatic state tournament berth, but he's still in the running for an at-large wildcard bid. Peterson represented B-B-E in the 11 to 12-year old bracket. Further announcements on a possible advancement to the State competition is forthcoming. The State competition is on June 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

The Pitch, Hit and Run contest was sponsored locally by the B-B-E Area Jaycees, and the local contest was held earlier in May. Read all about the Pitch, Hit and Run contest, sponsored by Major League Baseball and the Boys and Girls Club, at the following link: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/kids/mlb_pitch_hit_run.jsp

By the way, I recently had supper at Classic Company Dinner Theater, and they put "Bambi" on the big screen for our kids to enjoy. What a neat atmosphere! The food was outstanding.

Jaguars suffer tought loss in game one at Pierz

The Jaguars baseball team lost 8-6 in the first game tonight at Pierz in a Central Minnesota Conference double-header. The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead in the first inning before the Jaguars scored three times in the third and three more in the fifth to tie it at 6-6.

In game two, the Pioneers hold an 11-1 lead after four and a half innings. Final: Pierz 11, B-B-E 1 in five innings.

Prairie View Community Golf Course was hosting a CMC boys' golf meet today. It was a blustery to say the least. Many drives got hung up in the air and sent sideways or even backwards.
