B-B-E is closed for Tues. Nov. 30

The view off of Highway 29 in Glenwood this morning.

Just checked KSAX.COM...B-B-E has been closed today due to the fierce blizzard that's raging across central Minnesota.

A bit further to the west, the snowfall hasn't been as heavy and most western MN schools are only two hours late.

It's wicked out there!

Friday night schedule for the 5th annual boys basketball Tip-Off Classic

Friday night's games:
6:00pm - B-B-E vs. Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. 7:45pm - Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City vs. West Central Area.

On Saturday night, the Friday losers play at 6pm for third place, and the Friday winners play after that for the championship.

I've got some information on the WCA Knights. They have two outstanding seniors on the team, Beau Kashmark and Colton Blascyk, the lone returning starters from 2009-2010. Last year, WCA went 15-11 and nearly knocked Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta out of the Section 6AA playoffs in the semi-finals in an overtime loss to the state-ranked Tigers.

Kashmark (6’3”) was an All-Conference player last year in the Heart O' Lakes Conference averaging 12 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg and 4 blocked shots per game while shooting 51% from the field and 43% from 3-point range. Blascyk (6’0”) was named honorable mention All-Conference last season and averaged 11 ppg, 3 rpg, and 2 apg.

Beyond that, the Knights have many question marks but I'd say they are the Jaguars' top competition at this four-team tournament.

WCA's Blascyk is a play maker, being recently named the Most Valuable Quarterback in the Heart O' Lakes Conference. Kashmark is a two-time state entrant in track and field.

The 5th annual Tip Off Classic will be held at the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School in Grove City. (Same place we were for football on November 5 for the section championship.)

Schedule for Benson girls basketball tournament coming this weekend

Friday night's games: 6:00pm - MACCRAY Wolverines vs. Prairie Seeds Academy Lycans. Approx. 25 minutes after that, sometime between 7:30 and 8pm, the second game will start between the host Benson Braves and the Jaguars girls basketball team.

A JV game between Benson and B-B-E will be played at 6pm on Friday night.

Prairie Seeds Academy is a charter school from Brooklyn Park, MN. Their boys soccer team won the Class A state title just a few weeks ago.

Benson went 21-7 last year, one of their better seasons in school history, while finishing as runners-up in the Sub-Section 6AA-West championship game. They lost to Staples-Motley, a team that fell in the Section 6AA title game to Sauk Centre last March.

The third place game will be at 6pm on Saturday night, with the championship game to follow.

**Just added on Monday night...Girls basketball pre-season rankings by the Minnesota Basketball News publication:
Class AA - Sauk Centre is 7th. Class A - Parkers Prairie is 5th, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart is 6th, Minneota is 9th.

A nice accomplishment for the Jaguars football team, as they land two All-Area football pics in the West Central Tribune

I'm guessing you'd have to go back quite a ways to find a season in which two members of the Jaguars football team were awarded spots on the West Central Tribune All-Area team.

Seniors Kevin Kuefler and Ben Borgerding were both named to the team, which was just announced today.

Kuefler's capsule stated: Kuefler, a three-year starter for the Jaguars, caught 33 passes this season for 407 yards and five touchdowns. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa reached the Section 4A championship with Kuefler accounting for the lone B-B-E score in a 15-6 loss. On defense, Kuefler intercepted three passes, had five pass breakups and made 44 tackles. He also returned punts and kickoffs.

Borgerding's capsule stated: Borgerding made tackles all over the field for the Jaguars, finishing with a team-high 87. He also defended the pass well, while using his quickness and a nose for the ball, helping B-B-E reach the Section 4A title game. On offense, Borgerding led the Jaguars in rushing with 420 yards and seven touchdowns and also caught four passes for 45 yards.

Story on the Eden Valley-Watkins vs. Triton Class AA semi-final football game last weekend

Click here to read it, it's pretty good: http://myprepsplus.ourvarsity.com/schools/school-article-profile.php?Article_ID=2249&Schools=|66|

Best line of the story - the last paragraph.

"There will come a time when we'll be able to look back at how special it really was," EV-W head coach Jon Thielen said. "Right now, it hurts too much, but that's also what fuels the program, too."

A little on Jaguars wrestling...

The Jaguars shown during the Minnewaska dual meet on February 12 last season, a 40-33 win for the Lakers.

The 16th annual pre-season Central Minnesota Mat Rats report has just been released by by area wrestling guru Roger Mischke. Below is a little information from his report.

The Jaguars wrestling team went 7-16 overall last year and 2-5 in Central Minnesota Conference duals. They open the 2010-2011 season with a home tournament (8 teams) on Friday, December 3.

The Jaguars return five section place winners, including sophomore Ross Rath. Rath took third place in his bracket of the Section 5A individual tournament in Sauk Centre last year, as well as All-CMC honors during the season. He went 29-9 during his freshmen campaign on the mats.

Ben Bordering is the lone senior returning from last year's team. He competed at the 171 pound bracket in 2009-2010, finishing 19-20 overall and taking fifth place at the Section 5A individual tournament.

Eden Valley-Watkins and Kimball Area have been given the nod as pre-season favorites in the Central Minnesota Conference. EV-W went 13-5 overall last year, advanced to the Section 5A final four, and won the CMC title at 7-0 in duals.

Kimball Area went 5-2 in the CMC and 22-6 overall, the best season the Cubs have had since 1998, when they beat B-B-E in the Section 6A championship and finished 2nd at the Class A state tournament.

New Ulm Cathedral slays another favored football team in the playoffs - Final score from the 'Dome: NUC 34, Minneota 33

New Ulm Cathedral, who had knocked #1-ranked Springfield out of the playoffs in the Section 2A championship on November 5, won its Class A state semi-final battle with Minneota 34-33 on Saturday at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Minneota led 14-0 with 11:00 left in the first half, and with 4:39 left in the first half the score was 20-7 in favor of the Vikings.

At halftime: Minneota 20, NUC 14. The Greyhounds (12-1) earned a key interception with about 90 seconds to go in the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter, New Ulm Cathedral went for two to get the lead and held on with a stop in the final minute after a Minneota holding penalty set up 3rd & 11. Good game by both offenses and Minneota had a couple of penalties that hurt them and turned it over once at the end of the first half and had the late holding penalty that cost them.

Credit to New Ulm Cathedral for not giving up because they were down to the defending state champion by 14 points on at least 3 different occasions and they rattled off the last 14 points to win the game.

Minneota ends their season 11-2 overall, with a very talented crop of seniors who will be lost to graduation next spring.

Barnesville (13-0) won the other Class A semi-final game, beating a very tough Goodhue team 49-30.

  • In a tough loss for Eden Valley-Watkins, the Eagles lost 12-6 to Triton in one of the two Class AA semi-finals.
It marks the 2nd straight year that EV-W has gone 12-1 and lost a close heartbreaker in the state semis. In 2009, the Eagles fell 21-20 in overtime to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, who won the state title. Interestingly, both WEM and Triton hail from Section 2A.

The Eagles' touchdown came with 3:09 left in the game. Most of EV-W's 231 overall yardage was earned in the fourth quarter. They were limited to 69 yards rushing.

From what I heard, the Triton defense controlled the game from beginning to end. That's crazy, considering what all B-B-E and CMC football followers know about the Eagles.

Triton earned 3 picks in the game, the last coming on the final play, when the Eagles were on the Triton 49 yard line hoping to score and tie it up. EV-W had only one interception all season coming into the state semi-final game.

Jaguars' coaches Moscho and Weller will be on Smooth Magic 107's Coaches Roundup on Saturday morning **Beginning at 7:15am

A real quick note...

Jaguars football coach Chris Moscho will be on the Coaches' Roundup beginning at 7:15am on Saturday morning.

Jaguars volleyball coach Kevin Weller will follow Moscho's interview at approximately 7:40.

This is a slight change from what I posted earlier in the day on Friday, since Dave McClurg had a longer interview than expected with Coach Weller. Plenty to talk about with a big state tournament run, of course!

You can tune in on the radio (107.1FM) or on the internet at their website: http://www.smoothmagic107.com and then click on the blue "listen" logo to pull up Windows Media Player streaming audio.

On another note, I've uploaded and edited quite a few more Jaguar volleyball video clips from the Section 5A playoff run and the state tournament. Look for more of them over the weekend.

Winter sports season is not far away! The rosters for the B-B-E girls basketball and girls dance teams have been posted already at the MSHLS website. I'll be commenting on them next week after I get a light pre-season Central Minnesota Conference story put together. Boys basketball opens December 3 at Grove City, girls basketball on Dec. 3 at Benson, and wrestling on Dec. 3 with a home invitational. Yikes, only two weeks away.

BBE vs. Cherry - Class A state consolation semis

The Jaguars' defense held the Tigers' offense to a negative hitting percentage, with 22 errors on 88 attacks with 21 kills as a team. Cherry's lone hitter in double figures for kills was Morgan Hanson, who had 10 kills on 39 attacks.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars' offense tallied a .277 hitting percentage as a team, led by Maggie Gruber's 20 kills on 31 attacks. Shyan Kuefler was next for kills with seven, followed by Taylor Braegelman with five.

This is the opening minutes of game one between BBE and the Cherry Tigers on November 12 at Xcel Energy Center.

Early in the second quarter: 7-7 tie, after Maple Lake's Jesse Puncochar scores on a 1-yard, fourth-down run.

The Irish cut into a 28-14 Cobras' lead with a 17-yard TD pass from Cameron Knudsen to Mitch Wurm makes it Triton 28, Maple Lake 21 with 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Jaguars go down in four in consolation championship vs. Win-E-Mac

Coach Weller consoles his team moments after they lost in the consolation championship match to the Win-E-Mac Patriots.

Just as many travelers in Minnesota had their trips literally derailed as their autos flew into the ditch during a very serious winter storm, the Jaguars volleyball team's hopes of finising their season with a win were derailed in the consolation championship of the Class A state tournament. Against Section 8A champion Win-E-Mac, the Jaguars went down to defeat in four games.

In game four, they held a 22-19 lead before Win-E-Mac closed out the match with a 6-1 run.

Win-E-Mac high school is located in Erskine, in northwest Minnesota.

Jaguars take control during game two vs. Mayer Lutheran

The beginning of the video clip is pretty rough - then it settles down. The Jaguars ultimately won game two 25-17.

They play again today at 3pm at Xcel Energy Center against Cherry, from Iron, Minnesota near Hibbing.

State tournament update - Sauk Centre goes up 2-1 in games on Marshall

The 'Streeters won game two 25-16 and then won game three 25-19 to go up 2-1 in games on #3 seeded Marshall in the Class 2A quarterfinals. They were drubbed in game one 25-11 and it did not look good going into game two for the Mainstreeters.

Update at 20:43...Sauk Centre won! They played back from an early 7-1 deficit in game four and defeated heavily-favored Marshall 25-23 to take the match. Marshall led 21-14 and appeared poised to force a fifth game. Kali Peschel stepped up as all great players do and scored the first six points of a Streeters' 11-2 run that closed out the match. B-B-E coach Kevin Weller's niece Macy Weller (sophomore) drilled an ace block and a kill to tie it at 23-23. The Tigers hit long on the final two points to lift Sauk Centre into the semi-finals, where they'll face undefeated Wadena-Deer Creek.

See you at Xcel tomorrow.

Jaguars' state title dreams go by the wayside in a 3-1 loss to Mayer Lutheran in quarterfinals

Senior Julie Hieserich, a third-year starter who also ran the offense on the 2008 state team, sets things up early in game two here for the Jaguars this afternoon.

Pre-match scenes...

In a 3-1 loss to Mayer Lutheran, the Jaguars volleyball team's state championship dreams ended in the state quarterfinal round at the XCel Energy Center in St.Paul on Thursday afternoon. Game scores were 25-27, 25-17, 22-25, 24-26.

They play in the consolation semi-finals tomorrow (Friday) at 3pm against Cherry. Cherry (22-3) lost to Wabasha-Kellogg 25-14, 25-16, 25-4 in the other quarterfinal match at 3pm. Their school is located in Iron, Minnesota - directly between Hibbing and Eveleth, Minnesota. This is their first ever trip to state in volleyball.

My two cents - the Jaguars certainly did not play poorly. They played very well at times, with lots of hustle and teamwork. In the end, though, they didn't have the desire or firepower that was a trademark of their Section 5A championship run.

They'll come out firing tomorrow!

About the Cherry Tigers...Cherry, who hails from Section 7A in northeastern Minnesota, is a senior-dominated team with four seniors in the starting six. The top three players off of the bench are juniors. They have two junior hitters in the starting lineup, then three senior hitters and a senior setter - running a 5-1 offense.

Cherry head coach Pam Pioske's comments about her team: "Important factors in the success of our team this season are team unity and bonding, believing in ourselves as a team. We were Arrowhead Conference Champions at 9-0 and St.Louis County Champions at 6-0."

More will follow into the evening.

You can view photos from the match at the Sauk Centre Herald website online gallery: http://saukherald.mycapture.com (They won't all be uploaded until mid-morning tomorrow, I've got about 100 up tonight)
