Home fastpitch double-header is underway today

The Jaguars fastpitch team, searching for the second win of the season, hosts Kimball Area at 4 p.m. today in a Central Minnesota Conference double-header.

The second game will follow at about 6 p.m.

Emily Roelike is B-B-E's first-ever Division II fastpitch softball athlete

Roelike, shown in action at shortstop for the Jaguars during her prep career, is without a doubt one of the most talented athletes to walk the halls of B-B-E High.

Just announced in today's West Central Tribune, 2009 B-B-E graduate Emily Roelike has signed with Minnesota State University-Moorhead to play fastpitch softball with the Dragons. MSUM is 12-20 overall and 4-15 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Dragons head coach is Kelsey Fehl, an interim head coach, who started for four seasons on the MSUM fastpitch team. Fehl was a three-year letterwinner in softball and soccer at Willmar High School, earning two basketball letters as well. She was named to the Minnesota All-State and all-section softball teams for the Cardinals as a senior,

For the Ridgewater Warriors, Roelike is hitting .509 with 10 home runs, 42 RBI, 56 runs and is 26 of 27 in steal attempts. A shortstop, Roelike is a key reason why her squad is 27-6 this season as the playoffs draw near. The Warriors fastpitch team is nationally ranked #2 in NJCAA Division III.

Not too shabby.

Thankful for the press box at Saints Field

It was a cold afternoon for a baseball game on Thursday, but Elrosa's crown jewel was definitely up to part on accommodating a photographer! The baseball complex in Elrosa is no doubt the best in Central Minnesota.

Jaguars win 1-0 vs. Pierz in CMC baseball action today

Kirby Montbriand pitched a complete game win vs. the Pioneers, while also earning one of the Jaguars' four hits.

The Jaguars recorded their first out of the game in the first inning when catcher Brandon Roelike gunned down a Pioneer trying to steal second base, with second baseman Matt Schmitz grabbing the throw and tagging the runner out on the slide.
In their first game at Elrosa, the Jaguars baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 1-0 win over Pierz in Central Minnesota Conference action. The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning on a two out RBI-single by Nolan Zachman. Kirby Montbriand pitched a complete game for the Jaguars, who are now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the CMC. Pierz falls to 1-5 with the loss.
Coach Montbriand earned his 100th career win today. He has been head coach of the Jaguars from 1991-1996 and from 2007-present. The best two seasons in B-B-E baseball history have come under his tenure as head coach. In 1995 the Jaguars went 16-4 and won the West Central South Conference, and in 2008 the Jaguars finished 15-5 and 10-4 in the Central Minnesota Conference (2nd place).
The Jaguars fastpitch team was a hard luck loser today, as they lost 7-5 at Pierz despite out-hitting the Pioneers by a 14-4 margin. Six errors that led to six unearned runs led to the Jaguars' demise. Michelle Sanders earned six strikeouts in the pitching circle while limiting Pierz to four hits.

In a boys' golf Central Minnesota Conference meet at Pierz today, the Jaguars boys golf team finished in fifth place. Their team score of 183 was only five strokes behind the first place team (Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins). Jordan Lewis led the Jaguars with a 43.

Central Minnesota Conference baseball results on Apr. 21:
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 5, Rockford 1
Kimball Area 5, Maple Lake 0
Holdingford 6, Eden Valley-Watkins 2 (EV-W's first loss since May 26, 2009)

Central Minnesota Conference fastpitch results on Apr. 21:

Jaguars host Pierz for Central Minnesota Conference baseball action in Elrosa

It was a cold day for a baseball game, but the game is certainly not for wimps!

I'm glad I could finally get to a baseball game, the first one of the season. In just a little over one week, the Elrosa Saints amateur team will get into action with a road game at Spring Hill on May 1 at 1:30 p.m.

Coming Thursday - Jaguars host Pierz in baseball action

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. Pierz is 1-4 overall.

Here's a story on the recent Pierz vs. Eden Valley-Watkins baseball game, won by the Eagles 11-6. EV-W scored six runs in the fourth inning to help fuel the win... http://mcrecord.com/archives/483707/pierz-baseball-battles-but-comes-up-short-11-6-against-defending-champs/

**Just heard from Gumby, the game will be held in Elrosa! He's taking down the last remnants of the outfield snow drifts tomorrow and said the field should have no problem hosting the game. (Yes, one part of the outfield at Saints Field still has snow on it!)

This is awesome - the Jaguars boys' track and field squad out-placed Paynesville Area at their home invite yesterday. I finally got around to checking out the team standings from the meet. The Jaguars placed fifth with 57 team points, while the Bulldogs finished with 45 in 6th place.
More from the meet will appear in next week's local papers.

A note on boys' golf...the Jaguars were scheduled to travel to Sauk Centre for a 1 p.m. meet on Wednesday, but that meet was postponed. It is rescheduled for May 23 at 1 p.m.

Jaguar track and field invitational is underway

Senior Whitney White finished in the top three in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at eight feet.

Katelyn Heinze ran an outstanding race in the 400 meter dash, placing fifth overall. (I don't have her time though.)

Whitney's third attempt at 8 feet, 6 inches in the Pole Vault event...

A few noteworthy items (I have incomplete results but will get more results this week from the track meet)...Zaph Dotson won the 100 meter race with a time of 11.79 seconds. He out ran the runner-up finisher by .01 seconds.

In the girls' 100 meter race, Kinlee Swanson finished in second place with a time of 13.62 seconds.

Great job, Jaguars!

More updates will follow from the track meet on Wednesday morning.

Knutson is co-medalist at home CMC girls' golf meet on Monday this week

Senior Amy Knutson earned co-medalist honors at the second Central Minnesota Conference meet of the season on Monday, shooting a 43 to tie Erin Dingmann of Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball Area.
Eighth grader Peyton Miller was not far off of the mark set by Knutson, as she came in with a score of 45. Both Miller and Knutson are returning state qualifiers for the Jaguars girls' golf team.

The meet was hosted by the Prairie View Community Golf Course.

In the first boys' Central Minnesota Conference meet of the season, Jacob LeBrun paced the Jaguars with a 43 at the Osakis Country Club on Monday. LeBrun was only three strokes off of the medalist, Alec Raabe of Rockford. The team results were incredibly tight, as the Jaguars finished fifth but trailed first place Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted by only 11 strokes.

Boys' golf team scores at Osakis: (1) Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 177 (2) Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins 179 (3) tie, Osakis and Pierz, both 182 (5) Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 188 (6) Rockford 196 (7) Maple Lake 201.

Varsity baseball today vs. Browerville is postponed

Also, the girls golf meet hosted by Rockford in Plymouth is postponed until May 13.

The girls fastpitch game at home vs. St.John's Prep is postponed.

A winter weather mix is moving to our area today/tonight. Good grief!

Six years ago today I recall planting oats/alfalfa. I don't think farmers will get in the fields until May at this rate.

Jaguars fastpitch team wins big at Browerville

Amy Bast, shown crossing first after she earned a hit against Osakis on Monday, earned a whopping four RBI at Browerville tonight.

The Jaguars fastpitch team lit up the Browerville Tigers early and ended up winning 14-6 in a non-conference game tonight. They led 11-0 in the second inning.

Junior Michelle Sanders recorded 13 strikeouts in the pitching circle.

The Jaguars (1-2) are set to host St.John's Prep tomorrow at 4:30.

Just saw this - White wins pole vault event at Paynesville track and field meet

At the eight-team Paynesville Invitational on Tuesday this week, senior Whitney White emerged as champion of the Pole Vault event with a best vault of 8 feet, 1/2 inch.

The Jaguars track and field teams are next in action with a home invitational, next Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m. Other teams included are Benson, Eden Valley-Watkins, Holdingford, New London-Spicer, Paynesville Area, Saint Cloud Christian, and Saint John's Prep.

Tonight (Thursday), the Jaguars fastpitch team travels to Browerville searching for their first win of the season. It's a must-win situation, as they need to knock off the Tigers to help out with sub-section seeding. It will be the season opener for Browerville, while the Jaguars enter the contest 0-2.

I had some incorrect information posted earlier, saying that the Jaguars baseball team will host Browerville/Eagle Valley on Friday this week. In fact, the Browerville/Eagle Valley baseball pairing has dissolved, and each school is fielding its own baseball team.

The Browerville Tigers, who will visit Regal on Friday to face our Jaguars, are coached by Matt Middendorf. Amateur baseball fans recognize that name as the Elrosa Saints' star shortstop for the past few years.

Middendorf's Tigers are 2-0 heading into their home game with Osakis tonight. They beat Eagle Valley 9-0 on April 8 and Pierz 12-3 on April 12.

Special note on the Jaguars baseball team's next home game

Today I heard that the Jaguars baseball team's next scheduled home game is on Friday, April 15 against Browerville/Eagle Valley, a sub-section rival.

It appears that the game will be held in Regal, with a start time of 4:30. I will nail down if that is accurate as soon as possible.

Saints Field in Elrosa will hopefully be ready to host games in time for the April 21 game against Pierz.

Fastpitch, baseball both drop games today

Fastpitch final: Osakis 12, B-B-E 0 (5 innings)

Baseball final at Spicer: NL-S 8, B-B-E 6 (the Jaguars blew a 5-1 lead)

In their home opener, the Jaguars fastpitch team gave fell behind 12-0 after three innings and never recovered. They were limited to three hits by Silverstreaks' pitcher Sabrina Zimmel, an Honorable All-State selection last year.

The fastpitch team will travel to Browerville on Thursday this week before returning home the next day and hosting St.John's Prep on Friday. Both games are at 4:30.

Jaguars fastpitch falls 10-5 at New London-Spicer in season opener - Jaguars baseball drops home contest to Upsala/Swanville Area

A young Jaguars fastpitch team had a solid outing in their 2011 season opener today, but a few bad innings cost them a shot at winning, as they fell 10-5 at New London-Spicer today in a non-conference game.

The Jaguars now prepare for the home opener, as they host defending sub-section champion Osakis on Monday afternoon. I am unsure yet which field they play on in Brooten.

The game will be aired on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood.

In a home game held in Belgrade today, the Jaguars baseball team fell to 1-1 overall with a loss to Upsala/Swanville Area. The Patriots plated seven runs in the first two innings to take an insurmountable lead.

The game was a rematch of two teams who met in last year's playoff opener, when USA beat B-B-E 4-0.

The Jaguars travel to NL-S (Spicer) on Monday to face the Wildcats in their third straight non-conference game to open the 2011 season. The Central Minnesota Conference opener won't take place until April 18, when the Jaguars travel to Holdingford.

Jaguar fastpitch season opener is today

Who would have thought only a week ago, or even just earlier this week, that three Jaguars spring sports teams would get the 2011 season out of the starting gates yesterday and today?

Later this afternoon in a 4:00pm game, the Jaguars fastpitch team will open their season with a non-conference game at New London-Spicer. The Wildcats were a force in the West Central North Conference last season, finishing third with an 11-5 league record and 13-7 overall after going 1-1 in the Sub-Section 6AA-West playoffs. They are led by senior pitcher Allison Ruter, who fueled her team to a win at Foley in their season opener yesterday.

The Jaguars were 6-12 overall last season and 1-1 in the playoffs. They will ride the veteran pitching of four-year starter Michelle Sanders this season. She is one of seven returning players from last year, as graduation hit the team hard in 2010.

Jaguars baseball opens the 2011 season with a win

The Jaguars baseball team took a 1-0 lead over St.John's Prep in the fourth inning tonight in their season opener.

Final score from Dick Putz Field in St.Cloud: B-B-E 1, St.John's Prep 0. The Jaguars picked up their second season-opening win in a row. With a great nucleus of players back, they are looking to improve on a 7-12 overall mark from last year.

Tonight's game was the first meeting of the two teams since April 15, 2005, when the Jaguars defeated the Johnnies 12-1 in St.Joseph.

Up next for the Jaguars baseball team: a short trip south to Green Lake Diamonds in Spicer next Monday, when they'll take on the New London-Spicer Wildcats. First pitch is at 4:30pm for the varsity game. Today I heard from John Vraa, NL-S athletic director, who said that the field should be ready to go by next week. Ridgewater might get in a game on Saturday there.

A quick sidebar, on upcoming radio coverage of the Jaguars fastpitch team. They are set to host Osakis next Monday afternoon, and I heard that Smooth Magic 107 will carry the game. I am guessing it will be hosted at the softball field adjacent to Prairie View Community Golf Course.
