Coming tonight! Spring concert (VIDEO)

Late on Tuesday night, a video was added to this blog post from the concert.

The B-B-E grades 6-12 choirs and bands will perform their spring concert tonight starting at 7 p.m. at Olson Auditorium. I'm currently looking for the live player web link for online streaming of the concert.

AND! Here's the link that you can share. I will try utilzing the "embed code" and post it to the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website. That link will also be posted here.

Direct YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/live/uBvaAXzygDU?si=M3Blb00uPP73x5tZ.

AND! Here's a link that you can click on to view a live video player during the concert: https://shorturl.at/OB0ge. This is posted at the newspaper's website. Please spread the word if you know of anyone who is unable to attend in person!

Slowly but surely, more albums are being added to the "news/events" folder for 2025 at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's SmugMug gallery. You can see all the 2025 albums by clicking here: https://bonanzavalley.smugmug.com/2025-B-B-EBonanza-Valley-area-events.

And in sports news...
Baseball practice, like all spring sports, has been conducted indoors and outdoors this spring. Last Friday, they had light pitching practice indoors and then outdoors as a team. While I was attending a track and field meeting after school on Friday, it was terrific to see senior Hayden Sobiech at pitching practice with Coach Klaphake. Fellow senior Ethan Mueller was catching for him in the gym.

Here's Hayden Sobiech practicing in the gym last Friday:

The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team makes up their doubleheader at Maple Lake on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Irish Stadium. It is great that they can pull this off this week, because starting next Monday...wait for it! Starting next Monday, Highway 55 gets blown up (figuratively speaking) with road construction and one-way traffic east of Kimball.

Let's revisit tonight's concert!
The spring concert held tonight at Olson Auditorium featured superb performances by the choirs and bands. The students and teachers should be proud of what they accomplished! I've got a mountain of material to work with across two newspaper issues.

Here's a short video recorded early in the concert...

In this video, the middle school choir ("Day 2 choir") is performing the song Flooding Rains by Harley Mead. Time to get back to the newspaper.

Winter Sports Show No. 2 and more Christmas music (VIDEOS, *UPDATES)

The B-B-E high school choirs and bands performed their Holiday Christmas concert on December 16 at Olson Auditorium. This week's Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper featured articles highlighting both the choir and band's performances that night.

Here's the last song performed by the choir at the Christmas concert:

Two videos from the high school winter concert have been posted at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website in a web article. You can find that one by clicking on the following link: https://www.bonanzavalleyvoice.com/section/bbe. In the next web article after that, you can watch the K-3 elementary Christmas concert from December 4.

Here's another link that directs to the high school choir and jazz band performing at Olson Auditorium on December 16: https://shorturl.at/vfcT9.

Also, I recorded a podcast tonight, and it is uploading now.

And here it is! My second sports show of the winter season:

As usual for these sports podcast recordings, it's entirely off the top of my head with no notes to speak of. While talking about the dance team, I forgot to mention an important point. At this juncture of the winter sports season, the Pirouettes dance team are far and away having the most success out of our winter sports programs. By a mile! Good for them, too, they have earned it. I hope to bring them dramatically better sports coverage in the newspaper in January.

Fingers crossed!

Thursday night, December 26 updates:
Getting back to basketball...the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team will have their hands full in a major way when they take on state-ranked Cass Lake-Bena on Friday this week at Sartell-St. Stephen. The Jaguars (4-5) will face the CL-B Panthers (8-1) in the first day of the Granite City Classic. CL-B's team is built around senior Gabby Fineday, who surpassed 2,000 career points this past February. Her Panthers started the season with 8 straight wins before they took a recent loss to Class 2A powerhouse Minnehaha Academy by a 101-35 score this past Saturday in Minneapolis.

In last year's meeting between our Jaguars and CL-B, which was also on the first day of the Granite City Classic, the Panthers won 71-45.

The Jaguars face another strong team in Saturday's game, when they take on Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at 10 a.m. at St. Cloud Tech high school. The W-H-A Wolves (8-0) are one of the favorites in Section 5A while currently being the top-ranked team in Sub-Section 5A-West. The Jaguars compete in Sub-Section 5A-East, where Braham (8-1) is the current top-ranked team (by QRF).

A few recent Fine Arts events have been uploaded to the newspaper's online gallery: https://bonanzavalley.smugmug.com/BBEBonanza-Valley-Area-Fine-Arts-2024.

A new web article from the Brooten Santa Day has been added to the newspaper website, and you can find it by clicking here: https://shorturl.at/pNA3j.

Merry Christmas to Jaguar Country! (VIDEO)

Today is Christmas in Jaguar Country!

I had the good fortune of having actual "free time" (whatever that is) to edit some video from the past few weeks. Some of it is uploading, but I'll post the embed code here for one video that should be viewable after noon today (Wednesday).

Here's the Middle School Choir singing "I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas" at the winter concert a week-and-a-half ago:

Altogether, the band and choir numbers in grades 6-12 are on the rise at B-B-E. This is a good thing. Not only is it is GOOD thing, but it is also a NECESSARY change! Parents need to get their children out of the terrible habit of quitting music when they get past the middle school grades. I go back to Christmas of 1938, and the Brooten high school band and choir numbers approached 120. That was little Brooten High School during the tail end of the Great Depression.

Update:...late Wednesday night, I'll get a second blog post up that will feature new videos, including my next installment of a Winter Sports Show.

High school band and choir Christmas concert is tonight (VIDEOS*)

Music students in grades 6-12 will hold their band and choir Christmas concert tonight (Monday) at 7 p.m. at Olson Auditorium. The middle school and senior high choir will perform first. The band concert is set to begin at about 7:45 p.m. starting with the 6th grade band. I am grateful and extremely appreciative that nothing gets in the way at B-B-E of our band or choir concerts! This is not the case at other schools, which is sad and pathetic. No athletic activities are scheduled for tonight - which is how it should be on music concert night!!!

You are welcome to tune in via the video player posted below. It should be "live" by 6:45 p.m. or about then.

LIVE video courtesy of B-B-E Broadcasting:

Further coverage to follow later tonight and also in the December 19 and 26 issues of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper. We'll see what I come up with this week! As of now, we are set to publish a 16-page issue!

Here's a very, very rough video featuring the final song performed tonight...

I shot the video on my big Nikon camera, which was very difficult to hold steady. I have a mountain of content from tonight to go through and prepare for publishing this week and next week. The concert was outstanding! Our high school musicians and their teachers have much to be proud of!

School closing (VIDEO)

I'm late to the party in announcing this but...today B-B-E schools dismissed at 1 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively, with busing departing the buildings at those times. The weather is at best "sketchy" now with icy rain coming down. There are no activities tonight. This is harsh to lose the girls' basketball game. HARSH. But as I told a couple of our teachers, 'We are all part of something bigger that we cannot see, so today we need to enjoy extra family time and make the most of it."

As I was combing through my concert photos from last night, I had a few more thoughts. In addition to the choirs, I also ESPECIALLY enjoyed the solos by Aidan Johnson and Samantha Baker with the senior high band. The Christmas caroling and final songs performed by the band were outstanding!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU to directors Kathryn Freeman and Sean Biehn!!! We will all work together and PUT OUR BACKS INTO building up our music program! The work continues.

Speaking of work, while it's likely your son or daughter was unable or perhaps forgot to bring their band instrument home, whether they're in band or choir they could spend part of this "partial snow day" improving themselves musically. There are countless ways this can happen. I shouldn't have to be the one giving those ideas out. EVERY DAY is a good day to become better!

Here's a clip of the senior high band performing one of their final songs last night:

More to come. I am bearing down on the 16-page layout and I hope it won't put me in an early grave!

**UPDATE at 6 p.m.: I fully expect that we could lose power tonight. There is heavy ice accumulating on the trees in town. YIKES. If there's any more weather-related announcements, I'll get that/them posted in a new blog post.

Grades 6-12 Christmas concert is tonight! (VIDEO)

The action starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Olson Auditorium in the high school.

UPDATE: that was a marvelous concert!! I think the best part was when band director Sean Biehn asked his senior high band members to stand up when he called out each student's activity...as in, the robotics kids, the track and field kids, the speech kids, the musical kids, the tennis kids, etc...there were numerous kids standing up for multiple activities. We are BLESSED with amazing kids here in Jaguar Country!

I doubt I will get to look at or upload any of my concert video until Wednesday. Right now I have the weight of the world on me as I am working on a 16-page newspaper issue. I am in a marathon right now and have to keep my eyes on the prize.

**OKAY! That concert was TOO good to resist looking at video...seriously...here's a clip from the senior high choir performance:

The choir was singing Underneath The Tree which is a popular modern Christmas song most recently made popular by Kelly Clarkson.

I also ESPECIALLY enjoyed the solos by Aidan Johnson and Samantha Baker with the senior high band. The Christmas caroling and final songs performed by the band were outstanding!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU to directors Kathryn Freeman and Sean Biehn!!! We will all work together and PUT OUR BACKS INTO building up our music program! The work continues.

On a downer note...I am not feeling good about the odds that we'll have a home girls' basketball game tomorrow night. The forecast looks truly awful. We'll see how it all pans out. As much as we want to live in denial, the fact of the matter is the 3 to 5 inches of snow that we're predicted to get will not bode well for any type of rural traveling.

Spooktacular is tonight!

Don't miss out! This has been heavily promoted in the last two newspaper issues. It runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the high school. Come out and show your support for our music program!

*Update! Update! Update!

What fantastic turnout! BRAVO! The main gymnasium was nearly shoulder-to-shoulder at one point. This was a very exciting night to be a part of. It was wonderful to see the amazing show of support for the B-B-E music programs.

Videos, catching up on the back log...and the Saints!

I've got a fair amount of photos and video content to post over the weekend. The last two weeks have been a blur. (Story of this past school year, really since things were cranked to "wide open" last summer across our area.)

**ADDED on Saturday afternoon...click on the following link to redirect to the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website, where you can watch the full high school graduation ceremony: https://bit.ly/3GRxNWf.

B-B-E's elementary physical education teacher, Austin Rambow, worked with the high school track and field team to host a field day event for students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The field days were held on Thursday and Friday, May 19-20 at the high school football stadium. I had the extreme good fortune to spend about an hour there on Friday that week with the fourth and fifth grade students. The comeraderie and support I saw between all students was something special to take in. They were all rooting and cheering for one another. You had to really be there to fully understand what I'm talking about.

Here's a video clip recorded on May 20 that features the fourth grade girls facing the fourth grade boys in a tug of war battle (short link): https://bit.ly/3Q4qUVU.

Fast forward from May 20 to May 30, and here's a video from Memorial Day that was recorded at the Brooten Pavilion (short link)...this video is posted at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website: https://bit.ly/39clw22.

Here's a good portion of the song performed by the senior high choir tonight at graduation:

The video was recorded on a "point-and-shoot" camera and not with a tripod. My tripod with my video camera was set up on the stadium bleachers.

***Just got the box score and stats! Wow! Holy cow! The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team won on the home diamond tonight while I was at graduation as they picked up a 3-2 win in 10 innings against neighboring rival Greenwald. Payton VanBeck started and pitched eight innings, and Ethan Vogt got the win as closer in the last two innings. Vogt also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Elrosa now hosts Regal in an exhibition game tomorrow night (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m.

Winter choir concert!

It was a smashing success! They were terrific.

I managed to snap 78 pictures at the concert. I'm combing through them now. I am flirting with the idea of a 16-page newspaper this week with extensive wrestling and choir coverage. We'll see how the next 24 hours go for this operation. The pictures turned out far and above better than I could have hoped for, but I'm getting the hang of shooting pictures in Olson Auditorium.

A big Halloween event tomorrow night

We've got a big, big event coming in Jaguar Country tomorrow night! (Monday) The B-B-E Band and Choir Halloween Carnival is tomorrow, Monday, October 25 at the B-B-E high school gymnasium and Olson Auditorium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Come enjoy safe Halloween fun with games, crafts, costume and coloring contests, food, Trick-or-Treat Street (sponsored by local businesses), spooky music performed by B-B-E band and choir students with fun for all ages. The Music Boosters ask that guests bring 1 nonperishable food item to be donated to the B-B-E food shelf or a free-will donation to the Booster Club.

Here's a video clip that I've never posted that is almost two years old. It's the senior high band performing at the Band/Choir Halloween Spooktacular concert on October 28, 2019.

This is an event I strongly encourage everyone to take in!

Blast from the Past: B-B-E Acoustics at The Barn

And what a day that was! Here's members of the B-B-E choir singing the National Anthem before the start of the boys' basketball team's state tournament run.

The date was Thursday, March 22, 2012, and the Jaguars defeated Lakeview Christian Academy 85-76 in the Class 1A state quarterfinals on their way to a state title in a perfect and truly unforgettable 33-0 season. The singing group included freshmen through senior choir members. A new member of the K-12 teaching staff at B-B-E, Brittany (Roelike) Borgerding, is in the far back of this group. She was a junior that year.

Photo galleries

A few additional photo galleries have been added, filled out and rounded out at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's online website...here's the general folder with events from 2019 across the area:
https://bonanzavalley.smugmug.com/2019-BBEBonanza-Valley-area-events.

...and here's the photo gallery that includes photos from various Fine Arts-related school and community events in the Bonanza Valley. The photo gallery from the December 15 Christmas recital at Belgrade Nursing Home was just added today:
https://bonanzavalley.smugmug.com/BBEBV-Area-Fine-Arts-2019.

I just saw this story on the West Central Tribune website tonight...and all I could think was "Good Lord, Almighty!" ...this is flat out crazy. Over $400,000 was allegedly stolen from New London-area small businesses by a Mounds View woman who worked as their bookkeeper.

Read more here (short link): https://bit.ly/2u8lxPF.

My two cents: CRIME SHOULD NOT PAY! And this type of predatory behavior towards small businesses should be severely punished.

5 ways you can show others Jesus this Holiday season

First, before diving into the long column posted below, you can take in the full video that I took on December 2 at the B-B-E high school Christmas concert...posted with a December 5 web article at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website (short link): https://bit.ly/398F7vk. Also included in that web article is a link to the newspaper's online photo gallery from that night.

And here's a link to the Bonanza Valley Voice website where you can watch a short video clip shot on main street Brooten yesterday morning (short link): https://bit.ly/37b2rXk.

"Five ways you can show others Jesus this Holiday season"

written by Kayli Thompson, http://www.crosswalk.com

If you’ve ever worked in retail, you know that the holiday season isn’t always “the most wonderful time of the year.” That’s because people get mean, and cranky. We get caught up in all that “has” to be done, rush through the holidays, and leave others feeling miserable. The other half of people don’t get mean, they just get grumpy because they’re tired of being treated terribly and feel like the whole season has become about stuff. So what can be done?
We’ve put together 5 ways you can show others Jesus this holiday season.
1. Volunteer
The most obvious way is to volunteer. Shelters, soup kitchens, rescue organizations all can use help during the holidays. They can use it year-round too, but the holidays are especially busy. Many places need people to come and either help serve food, clean, ring a bell, etc.
But if you can’t get there to volunteer in person, you can offer to provide items or a financial donation. You can give to a food pantry, donate to your local shelter, or pick out a few tags from the trees you see in stores to buy Christmas presents for a child in need.
This is one of the simplest ways to show others Jesus, volunteering your time to others. And there are so many different ways to volunteer now, it’s so easy you’ll wonder why you hadn’t started volunteering sooner. I volunteer for Jesus’ Economy from the comfort of my own home. And it’s incredible because I can visibly see the impact we’re making by extending love to those who need it. We’re always looking to welcome more people on board. You can also visit VolunteerMatchGiveGab, or literally google “places to volunteer near me.” When you find something that strikes you, check their website and social media or call to figure out how to best get involved.
2. Deliver Holiday "dinner" baskets to those in need
So many families can’t have a holiday meal because they can’t afford it or they don’t have a car to actually get the supplies for it. Food pantries and churches fill the gap where they can with offering free food and meals near the holidays but most food pantries don’t have the funds to give out 20-30 turkeys or hams.
You can give a family a special holiday meal by filling a box with basics like a ham, some veggies, instant potatoes, and a dessert. You can include a little note letting them know someone cares, whether you do that anonymously or not. You might already know of a few families in need, but if you don’t, you can reach out to your local food pantry, church, or school to identify who could benefit from a holiday dinner basket.
Providing a family or two with a holiday dinner basket shows them they aren’t alone in this world and that someone cares about them and their family. After all, Jesus tells us in Matthew that whatever we do to those in need, we do to Him. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, … ‘Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me’” (Matthew 25:35a, 40b, ESV). When we take care of others, when we help those in need, we’re doing the work Jesus wants us to do.
3. Give your time
The holiday season gets busy and depending on your ability to say no, it can get chaotic busy. Our calendars are filled with school, church, and work then we pack on events that those schools, churches, and workplaces hold along with sprinkling in fun, seasonal activities. It creates a few months of constant running and never pausing, never enjoying.
So imagine how you could make someone feel if you gave them your time. Even if it’s a couple of hours carved out of your day. We all know we’re busy this time of year so if you take the time to take a friend out for lunch or show up at their doorstep and say, “What do you need help with?” it’ll show them how much you care. Maybe it’ll look like offering your time to someone you’ve just met or that friend you keep saying you need to get together with.
Jesus spent time with so many people while He was here on Earth -- disciples, women, the unclean, the impoverished, Samaritans, centurions, tax collectors, you name it. He didn’t just give them ten minutes either. He sat down with them, ate with them, listened, and healed them when they believed He could. He showed how much He loved them because He gave them His time even when He knew that He didn’t have much. Don’t you think we could give even a fraction of the time that Jesus gave people?
4. Invite someone over for the holidays (and remember: Christmas continues even after December 25!)
There’s always people who could use a place to go for the holidays, whether it’s the college student who can’t get home, the couple who can’t afford it, or the single person who doesn’t have family. Holidays can be rough when you don’t have somewhere to go or someone to spend it with. And I can guarantee you they’re hoping someone will invite them over for the holidays.
I know it might be hard to invite someone into your family’s celebration and it might seem awkward, but it’ll be worth it. Bringing someone into your home, including them in your family, and showing them the love of Jesus by loving them is one of the greatest gifts you could give someone this season. You’ll never fully realize the impact it’ll have on them.
Peter wrote in his letter to believers that they should be hospitable without complaining and to use the gifts they’re given to serve others (1 Peter 4:9-10, ESV). If God has bestowed upon us a home with loving family, we should extend that gift to others who could benefit from it. God wants us to share His love with others (John 13:34-35, ESV) and opening your home and family to someone who could use it is a wonderful way to do that.
5. Be kind.
I guess we started and ended this list with obvious ones. It seems so simple, and yet, the world seems so void of kindness, especially around the holidays. It doesn’t have to be that way; we can extend kindness and watch it grow. You can be kind in even the smallest of situations, especially because you know deep down, those situations are temporary and not worth your anger or frustration.
Practicing kindness in big or small situations every day can make a big difference in not only your own life but of those around you. You can choose to be kind to the rude cashier or when your coworker makes a mistake or when your kids break something on accident. When you choose kindness over anger, you make the person you’re extending it to feel loved. And they might just turn around and pass it on.
God’s commandments to us were to love Him and love others as ourselves. When we’re extending kindness to others, we’re both loving God and loving others. What a beautiful picture that creates this holiday season.
