This is Holy Week
Numerous area churches are celebrating and observing Holy Week with a variety of worship services. I learned tonight that St. Donatus Catholic Church in Brooten will host an Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday night, April 4 at 8 p.m.

I'm not sure what tomorrow will bring for sports. Today, we had incredible weather with full sunshine (most of the day) and a high of about 65 degrees. I finally dug dirt in our family garden! My soil thermometer is getting regular readings between 50 and 52 degrees at a depth of about 5 inches. This is great! The gardening season will soon be in full swing.
As it stands, the track and field teams have an invitational at Morris (hosted at the University of Minnesota-Morris track and field complex) at 4 p.m. Also, the baseball team is set to open their season at Paynesville Area high school. For the fastpitch team, they've got a road trip to Eden Valley. The forecast calls for 50 degrees as a high, a slight 15 mph wind plus heavy cloud cover. All told, a cool spring day is in store.

Right after returning home from the Bonanza Valley Royal Strutters Gun Blast last night at the Padua Pub, I went straight to the recording studio with the camera equipment. Instead of drawing up an intricate outline and speech for this 10th Fall Sports show of the season, I wanted to record it right away and get it done. With football and volleyball fresh on my mind last night, I figured I'd get most of what I wanted to say included.
Here's what I did not stress in the podcast: the trip to Fergus Falls on Tuesday night to cheer on our volleyball team is crucial! They will be playing on Tuesday without the support of the football team, who will be remaining home and just about wrapping up with their practice while the volleyball team is running pre-match drills. Let me be very clear on this: the match against West Central Area will be essentially a home game for the Knights. Their school district is neighbors right to the south of Fergus Falls. It's more or less a 20 to 30 minute drive for WCA Knights fans. For B-B-E fans, it's about a 1 1/2 hour drive. This is a HUGE hurdle to overcome! Please spread the word and fill up the car pools! Fan support goes a long way in the playoffs!

Today I thoroughly enjoyed having lunch at the Sunburg Free Lutheran church! They had an old-fashioned and delicious Lutheran potluck meal. They are hard to beat! Yah, sure, you betcha!
I looked ahead on the forecast, and it appears that our family garden vegetables will not make it into November. On the night of Halloween, a hard frost will take out what we have left growing with a low of 28 degrees. It is unclear if blankets will help. I may try a sleeping bag over a couple of our tomato plants. We'll see how the week goes.
Looking ahead to a few section football championship games... Section 6AAA: Minnewaska Area faces Albany in that section final at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1 at Rocori high school in Cold Spring. Section 5A: BOLD faces Minneota on Friday, November 1 at 3 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. Section 5AA: Kimball Area faces Holdingford on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. at St. John's University. Section 6AA: Staples-Motley faces Osakis on Friday, November 1 at the FargoDome at 3 p.m. Section 6A: West Central Area faces Parkers Prairie on Friday, November 1 at the FargoDome at 12:30 p.m. Section 4 9-man: Hancock faces Border West on Thursday, October 31 at the FargoDome at 11:30 a.m.
The B-B-E Class of 2024 had a terrific Baccalaureate worship service tonight in Brooten. Of the class of 39 graduates, 26 were in attendance tonight with numerous siblings, parents, stepparents and grandparents. This is always a marvelous event to take in. I am always immensely proud of our community - and more specifically our faith community - on Baccalaureate night.

After worship tonight, I enjoyed visiting with a handful of B-B-E baseball seniors about how the season is going. They were excited to host Paynesville, but that seems unlikely with tomorrow's forecast of additional rain and wind. The Bulldogs won their home tournament on Saturday with a 10-1 win against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg and then a 5-4 win over St. Cloud Cathedral. They are now 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Central Minnesota Conference.

11:30 a.m...about an hour ago, the home JV golf meet at Prairie View in Brooten was postponed one full week to Monday, May 6. As it stands, across the past 80 hours, the Brooten area has received between 3.5 and 4 inches of rainfall. Much of the ground is waterlogged for the time being.
Today's fastpitch game with Paynesville has been postponed to May 14 in Paynesville. For the baseball team, their game against Paynesville has been moved to tomorrow in Elrosa.
Holy Week started like a lion with a major snowstorm ripping across the Bonanza Valley area last Sunday and the days that followed. It was something to take in. I failed to heed my own caution, and I scooped too much of the heavy snow. No, I didn't have a heart attack, but I did wear myself out. I over-did it in a big way. I've needed the past two days to recover. It's amazing how having too much energy can get you in trouble!

Maundy Thursday worship services were held across the area tonight. We had a nice turnout of 36 worshipers at West Lake Johanna Lutheran church in Gilchrist Township. There was room for much more, though. I hope you can get to at least one worship service this weekend. Church will make your life better. No one goes to church and goes home saying, "Gee, whiz, I shouldn't have gone to church."

My wife has another doctor appointment as we further research why she is battling deadly blood clots.
The Lenten season is now in the second week for the Christian faith. Lenten worship services were held at a few area churches tonight. Tonight I took in a soup and sandwich supper plus a joint West Lake Johanna and Trinity Lutheran parish worship service at Trinity in Brooten. One week ago, I enjoyed a soup and sandwich supper at Grace Lutheran church in Belgrade. SUCH good food!!
While it ultimately came at the cost of speech team coverage, I finally got a story written with an ample array of pictures for B-B-E's Resistance Robotics team. You can see that in this week's February 22 issue of The Voice. They have an outstanding group of students on this year's team who are gearing up for the Great Northern Regional to be held in Grand Forks on March 6 to March 9. I am already making plans to travel to Grand Forks that weekend. We'll see how it all pans out.

I haven't gotten around to glancing at the thermometers we have around our properties, but I know it's cold out! I also haven't caught up to what churches have cancelled their worship services. West Lake Johanna Lutheran is one of them, however, so here I am late in the morning sitting in my home office instead of being out in Gilchrist Township at my usual spot in the church balcony.

Recently, the forecast called for a high of 9 below zero today for the Bonanza Valley area. Currently at our house, the two humidifiers we have running on the main level are not keeping up. I just saw that the humidity rate is down to 23 percent. Generally we keep it between 30 and 40 percent to stay comfortable and to maximize our personal health. Dry air is the enemy of humans in the winter time! This is common knowledge...although in today's world, we are seeing less and less common knowledge existing in society.
We keep our home's furnace thermostat set to keep the house between 65 and 66 degrees most of the time. With bitter cold temperatures, we turn that down to 64-65 degrees to save wear-and-tear on our natural gas furnace, which was installed in 2016. You can't be in our house for extended periods of time without wearing slippers on your feet. You have to have long sleeves. Walking around in a T-shirt in the winter is not part of our lifestyle. If you sit and watch TV, you're likely doing so under a blanket. We do this mostly to save money. It also builds character, in my opinion! I do not recommend these furnace settings if you have very young children, babies or are elderly.
How warm do you keep your house in the winter?
Weather update: as of 11:13 this morning, the temperature outside is 11 below zero. We're supposed to get "up" to 7 below zero as a high today. If you look at the extended forecast, we aren't going to get what I call "appreciable warmth" until January 21! On that day, they have a high of 21 degrees in the forecast.

In the latest Guillotine poll, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team climbed one spot to No. 2 in Class 1A. They are in the midst of a very special season. If you're up for some light traveling this coming week, I encourage you to cheer them on next Tuesday or Friday...on Tuesday, January 16, the Jaguars compete in a quadrangular in Eden Valley starting at 5 p.m. Three days later, on Friday, January 19, they travel south to New London-Spicer for a tournament that starts at 3:30 p.m.

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team is slowly moving above .500 and has an 8-6 overall record with about 5 weeks left in the regular season. They host Maple Lake on Tuesday, January 16 in their next game. That marks the beginning of a three-game homestand that also has Royalton coming to town on January 19 and then Paynesville Area on January 23.
On Friday, an 80-year old man drove his truck onto Mille Lacs Lake near Isle and died. His body was found floating at the hole where his truck went through, as he was wearing a flotation device. I don't know what good that is if you go in the lake, because unless you're pulled out immediately, you're going to die. If nothing else, it allows your body to be quickly recovered. The ice in that location was only 6 inches thick. The ice needs to be 13 to 17 inches thick to support most cars and trucks! Good grief. I hope no one in our area is driving a car or truck out on a lake right now.

I haven't caught up yet with how our local college basketball players have been doing lately. The last I was able to was a couple weeks ago. I will be able to do that today and update this blog post.
Tiyana Schwinghammer's Northland Pioneers women's basketball team of Thief River Falls has gone 2-1 so far in January after they beat then No. 4-ranked Riverland College 73-49 in that game on December 29. On January 3, the Pioneers lost 94-50 to North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. They've won two straight since then with a 96-32 win over Vermilion Community College on January 6 and then 75-64 over Rainy River College last night at Thief River Falls. During the win over Vermilion, Schwinghammer recorded her sixth double-double of her freshman season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. In last night's win over Rainy River, Schwinghammer earned her seventh double-double of her career with 17 points and 13 rebounds as her team improved to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the Minnesota Community Athletic College's North Division.
In the latest NJCAA Division III national rankings, the Northland Technical and Community College Pioneers women's basketball team is ranked No. 3. It is their first top-15 ranking during the 2023-24 season.
Schwinghammer's former Jaguar teammate Abby Berge is having an outstanding season as a true freshman at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, where her NCAA Division II Dragons women's basketball team has climbed to 6-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. In last night's 75-42 win over the University of Sioux Falls, Berge had 10 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes of reserve action. She made 6 of 7 shots at the free throw line. On Friday against visiting Southwest Minnesota State University of Marshall, the Dragons lost 74-61 after a rough first half. Berge had a monster game off the bench, though, with 26 minutes of action during which she earned a double-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. This was her second double-double of her college career.
MSU-Moorhead's women's basketball team currently has a 6-9 overall record, but they are 3-1 so far in January.
Monday, January 15 update: it is damn cold outside! I walked to my office once today, and the walk back home was pure hell. The northwest wind was raw. I had almost my entire face covered, but the wind ripped straight through my scarf and head coverings. I hope we all make wise decisions as we venture outside and do our traveling today and the rest of this week!
To help put a book end on the Belgrade August Fest celebration, the Big Grove-Crow River-Grace Lutheran parish held an outdoor worship at the city park on Sunday, August 13. The turnout surpassed 80 on the hazy, cool morning. After worship, a pulled pork lunch was served by the Free Spirits parish youth at the park shelter.

Here's video from worship service on the final Sunday before Lent began...Sunday, February 27. This is at Sunburg Free Lutheran church, where Pastor Ron Knutson leads worship every Sunday. A dairy farm boy from the Norway Lake area, in his younger days, he was a bruising fullback for the Brooten Buccaneers football team in the late 1950s.

I've had a lot of people ask me about Sleepy Eye St. Mary's and how good they are. I answer every time: they are very good! They are tough as nails! They played a tough schedule and won most of their games. On paper, they are underdogs in the upcoming match up with our B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team, but that doesn't mean it won't be the fight of our lives to get past the state quarterfinals. The game is not played on a stat sheet! I'm still compiling information on them. Stay tuned.
I'm still going over New York Mills statistics. One of their big guns is Noah Noffsinger, who scored just five points. B-B-E survived the game in part because of Noffsinger's shooting performance: 1 of 6 on two-pointers and 1 of 6 on three-pointers, plus he didn't get to the free throw line. Another big gun is Jack Peeters, who scored just four points on perfect 2-for-2 on field goals with no three-point shots and no free throws attempted. A third big gun for NYM is Jonah Johnson, who scored just two points on 1-of-5 field goal shooting with no three-point or free throw attempts. I've got other insights to the New York Mills game, but they will be saved for the print edition of the Bonanza Valley Voice to prevent any possible intel falling into SESM's hands.
A sermon by Pastor Ron Knutson always delivers! He's an outstanding country preacher who lives and works right among us. A feature article on his ministry was published a year ago in the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

Pastor Knutson is a 1958 graduate of Brooten high school. He was a powerful fullback and team captain for the Brooten Buccaneers football team.
Just how out of it was I this weekend? I never got around to posting the big news that the B-B-E Jaguars volleyball team earned second place at Alexandria yesterday. They lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Alexandria by a 21-19 score (in a 15-point game). The Jaguars take a 16-7 record into this Tuesday's home section match with Hancock.
**Don't forget about today's FREE harp/cello concert at Olson Auditorium, B-B-E high school! It starts at 2 p.m. And yes, it's FREE!
That's all for today. I'm still kicking my "Homecoming Hangover" - I could barely walk out of the stadium after Friday's game - I definitely over-did it last week, and I really shouldn't be doing that. Tomorrow is a pretty big day, too, with B-B-E's students holding their first digital learning day (at home) plus the last home tennis match of the fall season.

I'm back into catch-up mode on many fronts. We published a 12-page issue this morning. It was a huge lift! Yikes!
On the COVID front, it's worth noting that Minnesota has recently fallen "sharply" behind South Dakota in the race to vaccinate the public. As of today, South Dakota reports that 22 percent of their state has received at least one jab. In Minnesota, if 22 percent of the public had at least one dose, we'd have over 1.24 million with the first jab complete. Instead, we're hovering around 800,000 people who have had at least one jab.
We all need to keep asking the question: why is Governor Walz so bad at his job? Why is his state health department so bad at their job? Why do we accept a failed governor? It is really aggravating.

Also, I learned tonight that Perham will not be attending the wrestling triangular tomorrow at Morris Area high school. The event will be a dual between our B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team and Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta. The JV wrestlers will start competing at 6 p.m., and once that wraps up, the varsity dual will begin. On Thursday afternoon I'll get a live video player posted on this blog in a new blog post.

She is a grandmother to two of our B-B-E Jaguar athletes: elementary-age Taylor Pieper and also sophomore Kaden Pieper, who was a key reserve on last year's sub-section finalist Jaguar boys' basketball team. Erickson also works as a cook at B-B-E high school. Taylor and Kaden were both featured in photos in the November 12 Bonanza Valley Voice with deer they shot near Spicer back in October.
Two minutes into the video, Pastor Wayne Kopitzke begins his Holy Gospel reading. He reads from the Bible's book of Matthew, chapter 6. Then around 4 minutes into the video, worshipers sing the Gospel acclamation. Pastor Wayne's sermon begins at the 4:40 mark.
