On Thursday night this week, B-B-E schools announced that the Homecoming football game will not have a gate fee. Instead, the school is collecting a free will offering at the gate which will be fully donated to the Reed and Carrie Adrian family. The B-B-E Jaguars football team hosts Maple Lake, and kickoff is at 7 p.m. At halftime, the 5th-6th grade youth tackle football team will play in an intrasquad scrimmage. I have heard they have very good numbers this fall, which bodes well for the future of the program.
The Homecoming tailgating party, sponsored by the Belgrade Commercial Club, starts at 5:30 p.m. at the ag shop on the east side of the school building. That is also where the free will donation will be collected.

It is great to hear all the concern from people, and I also want to ask the public to be patient with a funeral announcement. My suggestion is to be prepared to be flexible and be willing to sacrifice part of your time and energy next week for that whole process. There is no playbook here. Also, pray endlessly, and be willing to offer grace to others.

Homecoming Coronation was terrific (VIDEOS*, UPDATES)

Tonight, on Day One of Homecoming week, B-B-E high school's Olson Auditorium was the site of another wonderful Homecoming coronation ceremony. Year after year, this event does not disappoint! I can't say enough about how enjoyable this event is. HATS OFF to the hard work of the student council and their fearless advisor, Mrs. Carrie Halvorson!

In sports news...
TheB-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team lost in what felt like a bone-crushing defeat tonight in the first of their two Homecoming matches this week. Against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area, the Jaguars suffered a 4-3 loss. It was a back-and-forth match the entire night. The Thunder won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and the Jaguars then won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Thunder then won 2 of the final 3 points on the table to earn the Prairie Conference win. Next: the Jaguars have a makeup match at Parkers Prairie on Tuesday.

Tuesday...Hawaiian Day at the high school! Homecoming Day No. 2...
The girls' tennis team hits the road to Parkers Prairie for a Prairie Conference match at 4:30 p.m. The volleyball team hosts Sauk Centre in a highly anticipated border battle clash. This is their first meeting on the volleyball court since 2021, when the Mainstreeters went 33-1 and won the Class 2A state title.
This is Homecoming Week in Jaguar Country, today is Day One!
We woke up in Jaguar Country to thick fog and tremendous dew on the ground. It was wet! The sun is supposed to burn through it and give us a warm, sunny day.
Two big events are today for Day One of the Homecoming week, the 37th annual at B-B-E schools. The first Homecoming at B-B-E was in October 1989 during the first year of the academic pairing between Brooten and Belgrade-Elrosa schools.
1.) The B-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team host Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area in a Prairie Conference match. This begins at 3 p.m. at the high school courts.
2.) The Homecoming Coronation ceremony is at 7 p.m. tonight at the high school's Olson Auditorium. This is open to the public.

Over the noon hour today, the sun came out! It is shining strong, which is great. It's easy to tell that this is fall, and the sun does not have quite the kick it had across June-July-August. That saddens me, because it means winter is coming.

Homecoming Day IV! Another exciting day underway - and tennis wins!
We're having another incredible day of Homecoming excitement in Jaguar Country!
At Clara City tonight vs. MACCRAY/Renville County West in their last regular season match, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team earned a convincing 5-2 win over the Wolverines. I know the Jaguars had wins at No. 2 singles (Bree Thieschafer in straight sets) plus No. 3 doubles (Olive Olson and Hannah Wurm). This improves their overall record to 4-11 as they prepare for the Section 6A playoffs. It's also their best regular season record since 2021! Playoff seeding takes place on Monday, so the Jaguars won't know what the playoff road looks like until that night. Section 6A includes 9 teams, and currently, the Jaguars sit in the No. 7 or No. 8 range.
Other tennis wins against MACCRAY/RCW came at No. 1 singles (Hannah Hirman), No. 3 singles (Izzy Graham) plus No. 1 doubles (Grace Berndt and Ellan Fischer).
I also heard that the 7th/8th grade junior high football Jaguars lost a heartbreaker to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle by a 14-12 score in double overtime. A crazy tough loss, but they played a great game. Coach Funk reported that the Jaguars trailed 6-0 with a minute to go in regulation. They tied it with a 70-yard touchdown pass to force the first overtime.
More to come after tonight's varsity volleyball match. Our Jaguars are hosting Eden Valley-Watkins, who enter the night with a 3-10 record. They are ranked No. 4 as of this week in Sub-Section 3AA-North.

We are having another marvelous day of Homecoming in Jaguar Country! FULL sunshine and very little wind to speak of! The current temperature in the early afternoon hours hovers around 70 degrees! How about that! The predicted high is 71 degrees, although I think we'll get a little past that.

At the high school, grades 6-12 students enjoyed a grill-out for lunch, which was pretty neat to take in! Shop teacher Reed Adrian and math teacher Jack Mueller handled most of the grilling duties for hamburgers and hot dogs. This is such a wonderful day! Outstanding to be a part of Homecoming week!

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team lost a very close battle against Parkers Prairie by a 4-3 margin today on the home courts. It was also a Prairie Conference match. They were in the running for a third straight win, but it was not meant to be. Additional coverage is forthcoming in this week's Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

Upsala/Swanville Area, B-B-E's next opponent, is a fellow Top 10-ranked team. This makes our 36th Homecoming football game the first time in school history that two Top 10 teams will do battle on our football field! It's going to be one hell of a game!
I've been quiet the past couple of days...still recovering from the past...few...months! More or less...the weekend was...nuts!!!! I have over 1,100 musical photos to comb through. It could take a week or more...B-B-E's fall musical is a REALLY BIG DEAL! In case you haven't noticed from the attention I throw that way...it's a huge, huge deal!!! It happens just one weekend per year. We are so proud of all of the students involved!
More on this next item will be published in this week's newspaper...the Belgrade Commercial Club raised over $600 at the Homecoming Tailgating party on October 6 at the high school shop. This is amazing! It's far and above more than what other recent Tailgating parties have raised at this event.
Bravo to everyone involved!
Also coming in this week's newspaper will be a season preview article for the 2023-2024 girls' basketball team. They open the season at Melrose next Tuesday.
Newspaper update...let the record show that I may never get coverage like I did for a musical like I did a year ago. I looked and counted roughly 55 pictures that were published for the musical across two weeks in 2022. This year in this week's newspaper, I have 14 musical pictures included. We will see how it goes next week.
For state football coverage...I have 13 pictures from the Minneota game in this week's Voice.
Think of this as the calm before the storm! This is a yearly thing in my world, the day before crazy begins that we know as the fall playoff push with the volleyball and football teams and also the musical cast and crew...throw in Halloween, a number of community events...a "Gun Blast" at the Padua Pub...and it's a perfect recipe for some of the craziest weeks of the year. Trust me! We are in for a wild ride for the next few weeks.

The Jaguars prevailed in game one before losing game two. They won game three but then lost game four. The fifth game went to the Jaguars! They sewed up their fifth conference title in the past six seasons! B-B-E opens playoffs tomorrow night against Ortonville at 7 p.m. in Brooten. The Trojans defeated Benson 3-1 last night in Benson.

LATE tonight after I get some urgent newspaper work done, I'll get an area scoreboard posted with tonight's football playoff results. The big game we are all interested in is the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City vs. Benson game at Grove City. The winner of that game will travel to Belgrade THIS Saturday for the section semis to face our Jaguars!
UPDATE: with 9 minutes to go in their Section 4A quarterfinal game, A-C-GC held a 26-7 lead over visiting Benson.
FINAL SCORE: A-C-GC 34, Benson 13...the Falcons are now 6-3 overall and travel to Belgrade on Saturday for the Section 4A semifinals. They led 20-7 at halftime against the Braves, who finish 1-8.

Friday Night Lights VI: Jaguars win Homecoming by wide margin (VIDEOS**)
*Saturday night...I have cleaned up a few things in the blog post, such as incorrectly stating that Braeden Michels scored B-B-E's second touchdown of the game...he got the third one in the end zone, and it was Toby Cebulla who punched in our second score. My sports show recorded last night after the game is now live...
Mark it three in a row for Homecoming night!
The B-B-E Jaguars football team is on a special run this fall and also extended another winning streak as they won Homecoming night for the third straight year. Off the top of my head, they were also Homecoming winners in recent history in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017. I looked and saw the Jaguars also won Homecoming in 2008. B-B-E's first Homecoming game under head coach Chris Moscho was a 21-6 loss to Maple Lake in 2010. Overall, the Jaguars have had a great run for Homecoming and have won 8 Homecoming games under Coach Moscho, who is 8-5 in Homecoming games!!!
In 2020, B-B-E's Homecoming week was held in September during the COVID season, and the football season did not begin until the season opener on October 9 at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.
Also a fun fact I realized: this is the second time in school history that B-B-E has won three straight Homecoming football games. The first streak, mentioned above, was from 2011, 2012 and 2013. To no one's surprise...the Jaguars also had an outstanding QB1 in that era with Class of 2014 phenomenon Brian Goodwin.
B-B-E wins 42-6 over Browerville for Homecoming 2023! How it all transpired...Against a tough Browerville squad in a Mid Northwest Gopher Gold district game, the Jaguars posted a 16-0 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a 3-yard run by Toby Cebulla. The Tigers, on their second series of the game, mounted an 80-yard scoring drive and punched through with Mason Bruder's six-yard run with 7:12 left in the second quarter. Bruder's carry for the score came on a fourth-and-one play. B-B-E's Toby Cebulla and Carson Gilbert both earned assisted tackles on the two-point conversion to make it a 16-6 score.

The Jaguars opened things up with two more touchdowns before halftime. Braeden Michels scored with 4:41 left on a 6-yard carry. B-B-E then had one of their finest defensive performances of the season when they held Browerville to a net negative one yard on three plays with a punt at the 3:10 mark. The Jaguars then started their fourth series of the game on their own 40-yard line with 2:55 left. Brett DeRoo hauled in a Luke Dingmann pass all alone over the top in the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown with 39 seconds remaining. Owen Paulson's two-point carry made it 30-6 at halftime, at which point they had amassed 272 yards of offense. Luke Dingmann's passing numbers showed 9 connections on 12 attempts for 128 yards and one touchdown.
The second half was a shut out for the Jaguars! DeRoo caught a 19-yard pass to extend the lead to 36-6 with 8:09 left in the third quarter. Carson Savage capped the game's scoring with a one-yard plunge with 9:03 left in the fourth quarter. The last touchdown drive included a 43-yard run by Ethan Mueller for one of the most exciting plays all season.
B-B-E's student section was loud, proud and active the entire game. The B-B-E Pep Band played through challenging conditions, even in a light rain at one point, and concluded with the school song after the final horn sounded. I am so proud of everyone, top to bottom, who was a part of this MAGNIFICENT, memory-filled day and night!!!
FINAL: No. 9-ranked B-B-E 42, Browerville 6. This wasn't all easy, and the Jaguars had a few more penalties than they probably would have liked. Browerville (3-3) challenged them early with a lengthy touchdown drive on their second possession of the game. The Jaguars overcame whatever they faced, which is the sign of a team that is putting it all together.
Just how dominating was B-B-E's defense? Browerville had 80 first half yards on four possessions, although the final possession took place in the last 33 seconds of the second quarter with five yards gained. The first three possessions of the second half yielded a net negative one yard of offense, with the first two earning a net negative 10 yards. For the game, a total of 21 Jaguars earned at least one assisted or solo tackle. Owen Paulson led the way with 5 solos and one assisted tackle.
This win, coupled with Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg's 20-14 loss to Upsala/Swanville Area earlier today, puts the Jaguars in the driver's seat for the district title. The final stretch of the regular season will be interesting!
A few other postgame statistics: B-B-E had 407 total yards of offense (229 yards rushing and 178 passing) while holding the Tigers to 84 net yards. The Tigers were held to a net negative 7 passing yards while earning 91 rushing yards. Worth noting: of B-B-E's total yardage, the JV squad earned over approximately 107 of them! Another area of wide disparity: B-B-E had 19 first downs to just 4 by the Tigers. The Jaguars got stronger and stronger as the game wore on!!! Luke Dingmann had 10-of-15 passing marks for 144 yards with two touchdown throws. Aiden Mueller went 3-of-5 for 34 yards with his JV unit.
Ethan Mueller was B-B-E's leading ball carrier with 8 rushes for 72 yards. He led a group of five Jaguars who ran for 24 or more yards. Ryan Jensen was the leading receiver for yardage with 2 catches for 62 yards. Overall, the Jaguars punted just one time.
The Tigers are young with just 7 seniors, although 4 are linemen. Two of their main playmakers are seniors. Senior quarterback Kayden Tabatt went 1-of-4 passing for minus seven yards. He ran 9 times for 30 yards as Browerville's leading ball carrier. Senior wide receiver Miguel Maloney had one catch for minus 7 yards.
NEXT: the Jaguars (6-0) travel to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle next Friday, October 13 for another district contest. See below for the outcome of LP-GE's game tonight.

It's volleyball night in Jaguar Country! And we're in Day Two of B-B-E's 35th Homecoming week! Our B-B-E Jaguars volleyball team hosts Hancock in a sub-section battle in Brooten. This is quite a Homecoming night, and a valued one, as the volleyball team has been true road warriors with every match since September 8 being on the road. They last played on their home floor on September 7 in the conference opener against Holdingford. Tonight's match will be aired on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood. In game one, we are tied 18 to 18 and the Jaguars are in a timeout. Final: BBE 25, Hancock 20.
It donned on me last week...it was a pretty big mistake by my approach to things in terms of reporting on B-B-E school district history. Leading up to and following B-B-E's Homecoming week, I alluded to it being our "35th B-B-E Homecoming" in school history on a few occasions both online and in print.
In fact, it was B-B-E's 34th Homecoming week in school history dating back to the first one that was held in the fall of 1989. I had that correct, but I didn't count properly from 1989 to 2022. If you did that count, you'd get to 34.
On the athletic playing fields or courts, this is the 35th season that we've cheered for the B-B-E Jaguars across an entire academic year. This year's volleyball and football teams are the 35th edition of the Jaguars. It was in the fall of 1988 that local student-athletes wore the Jaguar uniform for the first time.
Here's the confusing part: this is the 35th year we've had the B-B-E Jaguars, but it's just the 34th year that we've had "B-B-E high school" with all students from Belgrade, Brooten and Elrosa and the small surrounding towns attending high school in the same classrooms. The Belgrade-Elrosa and the Brooten high schools were separate through the 1988-1989 school year. The elementary schools remained separate through the 1993-1994 school year.
Don't you feel a whole lot smarter knowing all that? I'm being somewhat sarcastic there.

I've got more blogging to get to later tonight. **In the Friday Night Lights VII post, a second video was added tonight featuring Toby Cebulla's touchdown catch late in the second quarter at Browerville.
Looking ahead to next week...it's a big week with much taking place across three days. On Monday night we have the school board meeting at the high school library at 7 p.m. On Tuesday the junior high football team hosts their final game of the fall season with Browerville coming to the high school for a 4:30 p.m. game. On Tuesday night, the volleyball team travels to Royalton to conclude the regular season. On Wednesday night, the football team hosts BOLD for Parents Night and their last game of the regular season.
Noteworthy: I saw in the box scores and stat lines that K-M-S had just 39 yards of rushing offense against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City last night. They still won handily by a 29-6 score to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Friday Night Light VI: Jaguars decimate A-C-GC on Homecoming (VIDEOS)
Note: additional videos were posted here on Saturday morning, and be sure to take in my sports show that's shown further down on this blog post. It was recorded on Saturday morning. I'll be offline for most of the rest of today. A volleyball post with Alexandria updates won't be added until after 2 p.m. today***.
One of the largest Homecoming football wins in school history was delivered tonight by our B-B-E Jaguars! And what a win it was! This was an especially cold night compared to the previous five football game nights we've had. By the time the game was over, frost had started to form on objects and on the grass in the stadium. Brr!! Fall has arrived. As the cold settled in, the Jaguars electrified the stadium and operated at full steam all night long in a 48-12 win. Without closely looking, I believe you'd have to go all the way back to when it all began, in 1988, to find this huge of a Homecoming football win. It was in the fall of 1988, when the B-B-E Jaguars fielded their first-ever team, when they defeated Brandon/Evansville 68-12 at the *Brooten high school Homecoming in Brooten.
Against a tough, fleet-footed Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City team, the Jaguars methodically took apart the Falcons piece by piece as they racked up a 36-0 halftime lead. Through the first half, the Jaguars held A-C-GC off of the scoreboard for six straight possessions. In the first quarter, the Jaguars piled on a 22-0 lead with touchdowns by Jamison Reed, Toby Cebulla and Luke Dingmann.
In the opening minute of the second quarter, A-C-GC's defense held inside the red zone with a turnover on downs. The Falcons proceeded to convert one first down before punting from their own 28-yard line with 8:25 left. The Jaguars then mounted a 63-yard scoring drive that got a huge boost by Dingmann's 26-yard run down the left sideline on the second play. Reed later had an 18-yard catch to gain goal-to-go at the A-C-GC two-yard line. Reed hauled in a running catch in the end zone for his team's fourth touchdown of the game with 2:46 to go. The two-point pass was deflected to make it a 28-0 lead.
A blocked punt by Harley Weber on A-C-GC's fifth series of the game led to a quick touchdown as halftime approached. The Falcons were trying to punt from their 16-yard line. The Jaguars had goal-to-go on their first play of the series on the A-C-GC 10-yard line. Reed caught another pass in the end zone to make it 34-0 with just 60 seconds on the clock. Braeden Michels ran in the two-point conversion to make it 36-0.

The halftime statistics were jaw-dropping: the Jaguars had limited the Falcons to just 30 net yards in the first half on 19 plays. One of those 19 plays resulted in a 12-yard run, and, well, you can do the math on the other 18 plays. On offense, B-B-E racked up 255 yards on 34 plays for an average of 7.5 yards per play by halftime. Crazy.

*I've got more video, but they won't be added until late Saturday night, and that will come in a new blog post. Most of my Saturday will be spent with a Miss Brooten Royalty trip to Xcel Energy Center for Sparkle Night with the Minnesota Wild.
To start the third quarter, the Falcons came out with new life and earned 18 yards on their first three plays from scrimmage. Their drive that started on their own 36-yard line ended on a failed fourth-and-six conversion attempt, as A-C-GC turned possession over to the Jaguars at the B-B-E 43-yard line with 8:09 on the clock. What followed was a nine-play touchdown drive culmating with a three-yard touchdown carry by Braeden Michels. The two-point conversion try was stopped just short of the goal line, and with 3:54 left in the third quarter, the Jaguars held a 42-0 lead.
On A-C-GC's eighth drive of the game, they started on their own 43-yard line and converted two first downs before they stalled out in Jaguar territory. On fourth-and-six, the Falcons were stopped with a five-yard gain at the B-B-E 24-yard line with just 18 seconds left in the third quarter.
B-B-E history was made on the next play, when the Jaguars started their eighth drive of the game on their 24-yard line with 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Jamison Reed caught a bullet shot from Dingmann in the right flats with tight coverage on him for a 16-yard gain. This reception pushed Reed's career total past 1,346 yards. That was the career total set by 2009 graduate Shane Weller. Reed finished the game with 168 receiving yards on 11 catches with three touchdowns. WOW! His record-setting catch was the first of a three-play touchdown drive that included a 41-yard run by Toby Cebulla and then a 19-yard touchdown catch by Cebulla. With 11:07 left in the game, the Jaguars expanded their lead to 48-0.
While the Jaguars were piling up 48 points across the first three quarters and change, the Falcons had accumulated just 86 yards on their first eight possessions with a goose egg on their side of the scoreboard.
A-C-GC started their ninth drive of the game facing B-B-E's JV defense. With a handful of first string offensive players on the field plus a new quarterback (eighth grader Brody Straumann), the Falcons started at their 46-yard line and used four plays to score on a 16-yard run with 7:14 left in the game. B-B-E's Andrew Spanier intercepted a two-point conversion pass.
A-C-GC's final score came with 1:44 left in the game when they attempted to convert a fourth-and-eight possession while earning a 31-yard touchdown run. Their JV quarter back ran around the right side and snuck just inside the right pylon ahead of B-B-E defenders for the touchdown. B-B-E's Louie Tensen provided tight coverage on an A-C-GC receiver to prevent a catch on the two-point conversion attempt.
Final score:B-B-E 48, A-C-GC 12. The Falcons fall to 2-4 overall, while the Jaguars improve to 5-1. A-C-GC's roster includes just 31 players, which is noteworthy considering that they are a Class 2A school. B-B-E totaled 450 yards of offense with 277 in the air on Luke Dingmann's 18-of-26 passing marks. The Jaguars rushed for 173 yards while accumulating 16 first downs on the night. A-C-GC totaled 185 yards of offense (99 on their final two drives in the fourth quarter) with 178 of those yards coming on the ground.

B-B-E Homecoming continues under another sunny day (VIDEO)

We've made it to Day Four of Homecoming week in Jaguar Country!
The sun is shining brightly on us today as we gear up for a host of activities later on. I've got tennis playoffs on my mind and on my schedule, so I have to bear down on work this afternoon before hitting the road to Litchfield high school before 3 o'clock. The B-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team faces top-seeded Litchfield in the Section 6A quarterfinals starting at 4 p.m. The other side of the top part of the Section 6A bracket shows No. 4-seeded Minnewaska Area hosting No. 5-seeded Melrose Area. **This afternoon I'll get a new blog post added focusing on the tennis playoffs. It will include a video interview of senior Annika Heieie.
Tonight we have home cooking for our B-B-E Jaguars volleyball team! They host Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City for their Homecoming match. The Jaguars are currently 14-5 overall and 3-1 (second) in the Central Minnesota Conference.
*Here's a video featuring the large group color burst that took place following the conclusion of the K-12 Color FUND Run races. This was an exciting moment that I almost missed out on videotaping!
We had a great deal of activity taking place at the high school sports complex. As I've said many times already, we had a marvelous Color Run day. MARVELOUS!!!

After a few days of simply being unable to pull this off, I finally got a chance to record another sports show. This one focuses on Homecoming week, which we are in the midst of in case you didn't know! I can finally get cleaned up from our 7th annual Color FUND Run!

More to come. As you can see in the video, I haven't been able to clean up yet from the Color FUND Run. This was the first opportunity I had to sit down and collect my thoughts today. I spent a part of my evening in the Padua Pub enjoying OktoberFest. There was also gardening to tend to. Yes, I still have a thriving garden!! Currently there's carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, onions and squash still going strong.

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' tennis team hosted Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area in a Prairie Conference match. The Jaguars won by a 5-2 score for the fourth win of the season.
Today we have the high school pep fest later this afternoon plus the annual Homecoming football game later tonight.
Here's video from the final minutes of the first quarter today in the B-B-E Homecoming Powder Puff flag football game. This is an annual event with members of the junior and senior grades battling it out on the gridiron.
It was a remarkable game that included three quarters of action. The kids had a blast, and that's exactly what you want to see in this type of spirited rivalry amongst a group of peers who get along very, very well!
