Live streaming of school board
Tonight's (February 27) school board meeting will be live-streamed at the Bonanza Valley Voice website's streaming page: http://citylinktv.com/channel/brooten-bonanza-valley-voice. A major point of discussion will be proposed $198,320 in budget cuts for the 2017-2018 school year.
The Jaguars shown battling Kimball Area on January 5 in Kimball.
The seeding has been finalized for the Sub-Section 5A-South girls' basketball tournament, which begins on Monday this week (Feb. 27). Kimball Area, runners-up in the Central Minnesota Conference, has earned the top seed.
The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team earned the No. 2 seed for the playoffs, and they will begin the postseason with a home quarterfinal game on Thursday, March 2. They'll host the winner of the No. 7 Onamia vs. No. 10 Ogilvie play-in round game at 7 p.m. Onamia and Ogilvie square off on Monday in the first round in Onamia.
B-B-E finished the regular season 18-8 overall, which ties for the school record for most wins in a regular season. That record was set in 2014-2015 when the Jaguars also finished 18-8 overall heading into playoffs. Prior to that, the school record for most regular season wins stood at 17-8, set in 2008-2009.
This year in the CMC, the Jaguars finished 10-4, good for third place alone and also rating it as one of the best marks in conference play in school history.
The school record for most wins in a season stands at 21, set by the 2014-2015 squad that finished as runners-up in Section 5A and 21-9 overall.
The Sub-Section 5A-South semifinal round is on Saturday, March 4 at a site to-be-determined. The times are 6 and 7:45 p.m., and if I recall correctly, usually the earlier game involves the No. 1 seed and whoever else is still alive on that side of the bracket. The sub-section finals is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7 at a site to-be-determined.
Blaine Fischer, Tyler Jensen and Trevor Kern will all wrestle in the finals today in fifth-place matches. And add Dalton Guzier and Seth Roering to that list.
The Jaguars have four in the championship matches: Canon Swanson, Tyler Bents, Adam Jaeger and Isaiah Gilbert.
All other Jaguars are done for the season.
These eight Jaguars all earned medals at the Section 5A individual tournament today at NL-S.
***Updates: Canon Swanson won the 113-pound title with a pin (1:50). At 126 pounds, Tyler Bents lost a 5-3 decision to Shawn Rue of Paynesville to fall to second place. Bents will not have a true second match.
At 145, Adam Jaeger won a 9-3 decision vs. a K-M-S wrestler to claim the Section championship. Isaiah Gilbert then lost a 9-4 decision in overtime against the top seed from Osakis at 145 pounds. Gilbert will not have a true second match.
*That makes four Jaguars advancing to state!!!! Canon Swanson, Tyler Bents, Isaiah Gilbert and Adam Jaeger. This will be Bents' third trip to the state tournament, second for Swanson, second for Jaeger and first for Gilbert. All four are underclassmen.
**Dalton Guzier won by fall early in the second period in his 170-pound fifth-place match. Other fifth-place match updates will be posted later on Saturday night.
*Here's video from Friday, the section semifinal match at 152 pounds:
The Class 1A state wrestling individual tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 3 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Canon Swanson will be on the mat at 9 a.m. ready to rumble in the 113-pound bracket that morning.

The finals will begin at 2:15 p.m.
Re-capping Friday night:
In the 113-pound bracket, freshmen Canon Swanson won by fall (5:19) over sophomore Hunter Mondor of Benson in his semifinal round.
At 126 pounds, sophomore Tyler Bents defeated senior Jacob Carlson in his semifinal match by a 6-5 decision. (video below)
At 145 pounds, junior Adam Jaeger won his semifinal match by defeating senior Darrin Stoetzel of Osakis by a 13-7 decision.
At 145 pounds, junior Isaiah Gilbert won his semifinal match by defeating sophomore Jared Knutson of Benson in an 8-6 decision.
Numerous other Jaguars won in the wrestlebacks or have byes in their wrestleback bracket and remain to fight on Day Two: Blaine Fischer (106), Tyler Jensen (120), Dylan T. Kampsen (132), Trevor Kern (160), Spencer Amundson (182) and Seth Roering (285).
Dalton Guzier won his quarterfinal match, but then in the semifinals was defeated to fall to the wrestleback round. That rounds out a total of 11 Jaguars who will compete on Day Two of the section tournament. Two Jaguars battled their hearts out but lost out of the wrestlebacks: eighth grader Mark Jenniges (138) and senior Jonah Voss (195).
Here's video from the 126-pound semifinals featuring B-B-E sophomore Tyler Bents...the video settings can be adjusted to Hi-Def:
I'm currently combing through and uploading additional video from tonight at NL-S, and I'll get some posted later tonight. In the mean time, here's video from the Section 5A team final four round at Holdingford a week ago:

In the Central Minnesota Conference, the Jaguars are now solidly in fourth place, sitting ahead of fifth-place Maple Lake (4-7) by two games. Kimball Area, now 9-3 in the CMC, locked up third place tonight with a 78-46 win at last-place Paynesville Area.

I've enjoyed seeing some great coverage of FFA chapters around the area in local newspapers. It's great to see such a wonderful youth organization get plenty of ink. For this week's Bonanza Valley Voice, I would call what I did as "adequate" and will more ink to FFA in my March 2 issue.
I noticed one thing that kind of blew my mind. The "group photo" for the West Central Area school district's FFA chapter had just a couple dozen kids in it. When I added the "not pictured" names to that group, I got to just 32!!! That means our B-B-E school district, which is smaller in K-12 enrollment than WCA, has an FFA chapter that's almost three times as large as WCA's. This year's B-B-E FFA has 87 members, while last year it had 89 kids. That represents more than half of all 9th-12th grade students at B-B-E!!!
Note: West Central Area's high school is located in Barrett 55 miles northwest of B-B-E's high school. The school is made up of the areas and towns of Kensington, Farwell, Hoffman, Barrett, Elbow Lake, Erdahl and Wendell. Their school district is just as dependent on agriculture and at-related businesses as B-B-E is.
Believe it! The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team just defeated the top-ranked team in Sub-Section 6A-South, Parkers Prairie, 61-50. They trailed by three points at halftime but held the Panthers (17-5) to just 19 points in the second half. The win improves their overall record to 9-13.
In a home contest, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team defeated Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 62-47. They are now 18-7 overall with just one game left on the schedule: a road game at Eden Valley-Watkins on Friday.
*Here's a quick shout out to the B-B-E seventh grade boys' basketball Jaguars. They traveled to Paynesville tonight and earned a hard-fought 48-44 win in overtime!! Great job!
Tonight's the night!!! The playoffs heat up like they haven't in years for the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team. Updates will be posted here after 6 p.m. from Holdingford High School.
##LETSDOTHISJAGUARS!
Final: B-B-E 32, Paynesville 31!!! The semifinal match was insane. The Jaguars shot out to a 17-4 lead after the 132-pound match, where Tyler Bents won a technical fall 19-2. The score tightened up from that point on, with Paynesville getting within one point at 26-25. Then junior Seth Roering went out on the mat guns blazing and won by pin in the first period!!! That sealed it, putting the Jaguars ahead 32-25.
***Next: K-M-S, in the Section 5A championship at 8 o'clock!!!! The defending champion Fighting Saints won 34-33 over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville in the other semifinal match.
Update.....the Jaguars are losing to K-M-S 24-8 after the 138-pound match.
After the 160-pound match, the Jaguars are losing 27-17. Adam Jaeger won at 160 by a 20-4 tech fall.
Here's video from after the Section 5A championship match:

**JAGUAR FANS!! Make tracks to New London-Spicer high school next Friday and Saturday! February 24-25...for the section individual tournament. We need a huge crowd to cheer on our Jaguars to the state tournament!!!
It's nine in a row for the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team, and it was quite the win after they defeated Maple Lake on the road by a 51-45 score in overtime. The Jaguars outscored the Irish 7-1 in the extra session.
Terrible free throw shooting came awfully close to ending their winning streak. They made just 11 out of 29 free throws.
In order to make it 10 in a row, the Jaguars will have to vastly improve their free-throw shooting as they will host a very good Minnewaska Area team on Friday (tomorrow).
Additional coverage of the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team, including playoff information, can be found on page eight of this week's Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.
The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team is heading to the Section 5A Final Four round for the fourth time since 2012 after picking up an impressive 61-15 win over New London-Spicer in the quarterfinals tonight.

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team won 44-42 over visiting Paynesville Area tonight. At halftime, the Jaguars led 21-19. They shot just 15-of-25 at the free throw line and will need to improve on that to pick up more wins in February.
Here's video from the final minute of the first half:
At Minnewaska Area, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team won 63-10. They're now 13-4 overall as they head into the Section 5A playoffs next week.

The Section 5A wrestling pairings were released late this morning. The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team has earned the number two seed for the upcoming playoffs. Seeded first was Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, who is also the defending section champion.
Earning the number three seed was Paynesville Area.
The B-B-E Jaguars host the first two rounds of the playoffs on Tuesday, February 14. They will face either New London-Spicer or Holdingford in the quarterfinals at approximately 7:30 p.m. that night at the B-B-E high school. It is my fervent hope that we will have a PACKED gym that night!
If the Jaguars advance out of the quarterfinals, they will compete in the Section Final Four to be held on Friday, February 17 at Holdingford high school. Two semifinal matches will begin at 6 p.m. that night at HHS. Keep that night open, and if we advance, plan on bringing every Jaguar fan within earshot to Holdingford!!!

Next: a tough game at Sauk Centre (13-4) on Tuesday, February 7. The Mainstreeters are reeling from two straight West Central Conference losses that took the momentum out of what was a six-game winning streak and also bounced them from the race for the WCC title.
