Youth baseball action vs. Willmar (VIDEO)
In a terrific youth ball game, the B-B-E Jaguars 12-U Silver baseball team lost 4-2 to Willmar in a home game tonight. The weather finally turned in favor of outdoor sports today! The past few days have been tough, to say the least, with cool temperatures, endless cloud cover and sporadic rainfall. Enough! It's time for summer to return.
Here's the Jaguars recording the final out in the top of the 5th inning:
The teams played a 6-inning contest. B-B-E's 12-U Blue team was playing at Willmar tonight at Sunrise Park.
On Tuesday night (tomorrow), we've got youth fastpitch softball taking place on the home field (city park) plus some Babe Ruth baseball action at the high school.
There's a few loose ends to button up for the spring 2025 season in Jaguar Country. This mostly includes post-season banquets and awards. Last Wednesday, the varsity and JV fastpitch teams held their banquet at the high school. Coverage to follow.
The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team postseason awards haven't been announced yet. The state tournament was just held last week, and it concluded with championship games on Saturday at Target Field. In some cases, state tournament games were rained out. This included the Class 1A third-place game featuring Section 6A champion Parkers Prairie.
I still have video to wrap up, and some will be posted. I just found a short clip on one camera that is posted here.
Here's action from the baseball team's playoff opener held almost three weeks ago:
Youth sports are all underway for the summer. The baseball team's 12-U squad hosts Willmar tonight at 6:15 p.m. at the high school fields. A new blog post will be added tonight.
On a cloudy, cool Father's Day afternoon, the Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team came away with a 4-3 extra-inning win at Roscoe.
It was a battle from start to finish, with Roscoe scoring 3 runs during the bottom of the first inning. The Saints scratched one across in the fourth inning before scoring once in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the top of the 10th inning, Luke Dingmann led off with a double and later scored the game-winning run on a successful suicide squeeze bunt by Will VanBeck. In the bottom of the 10th, Elrosa closer Ashton Dingmann got a ground ball and two strikeouts to close out the win.
Next: the Saints (8-5) host the Elite 8 tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 20, 21 and 22. Elrosa's first game is Friday night at 6:30 p.m. against the Royalton Riverdogs. That evening's action at Saints Field concludes with the New London-Spicer Twins facing the Waterville Indians.
This was worth the drive to Elrosa! A Blessing of the Cross ceremony took place at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Thursday morning. This occurred just ahead of a strong rain storm that was heading towards the Bonanza Valley area. In fact, rain had hit Brooten at the time this was taking place in Elrosa. Thankfully, the strong wind and accompanying rainfall held off until this event was complete.
Featured here are two Catholic priests on their way down from the peak of the church steeple in Elrosa on Thursday:
I just never know what the week brings me. There's something different every day in the Bonanza Valley.

As I am at the school board meeting now, I will have to write more about this in the upcoming issue of the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper.

In amateur baseball news...
The Elrosa Saints amateur baseball team plays at Freeport at Black Sox Park on Saturday night in an exhibition game, and first pitch is at 7:30 p.m. They are hosting St. Martin tonight in a Stearns County League game. This week Wednesday, they defeated Paynesville at Paynesville in an exhibition game by a 4-2 score. Against the Pirates, Torii Johnson pitched a complete game for the Saints with 6 strikeouts and no earned runs.
UPDATE: in tonight's home game, the Saints prevailed by a 6-5 score over St. Martin. The Saints scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to erase a 5-2 deficit. The Martins extended a 3-2 lead with 2 runs scored in the top of the fourth. This was a terrific win for Elrosa, as the Martins entered tonight's game in first place in the SCL-South division. They banged out 12 hits against four St. Martin pitchers. Ashton Dingmann started for Elrosa and got the win in 7 innings. Luke Dingmann closed and earned the save and surrendered just 1 hit, no walks with 1 strikeout.
Elrosa improved to 5-3 in the SCL-North division, while St. Martin is now 7-2 in the south. The Saints won't resume SCL action until they travel to Roscoe on Sunday, June 15. Their next home game is not until Friday, June 20 against Royalton in the opener for the Elite 8 tournament.
A truly remarkable playoff run that followed a remarkable conference championship regular season concluded for the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team today at Chizek Field in Morris. With the game tied at 1-1 through the 4th, 5th and 6th innings, Parkers Prairie came through in the middle of their order as they earned a 2-1 walk-off win in the Section 6A championship.
Parkers Prairie out-hit the Jaguars by a 7 to 3 margin. Ultimately, the Jaguars left too many stranded throughout the game in their 4th overall appearance in a section championship. They also played in the section finals in 2019, 2023 and 2024.
Trailing 1-0, B-B-E scored when Brett DeRoo was driven home from second base on an RBI-single by Ethan Mueller. It was a hard-hit ball that screamed just past the outstretched arms of the Parkers Prairie shortstop.
Hayden Sobiech pitched a marvelous game, as the senior right-hander went 6 2/3 innings while giving up just 2 walks to go with 5 strikeouts. In addition to Ethan's RBI-single, Brett DeRoo and Luke Illies also earned singles.
Parkers Prairie junior AJ Woodworth earned the pitching win. He was stellar on the mound and worked his way out of multiple tough situations while giving up 5 walks with 3 strikeouts in complete innings. The Panthers were ready. They knew what was coming. They knew they were in for a tough game, and that's exactly what played out. Hats off to their players and coaches!
B-B-E finishes the season 18-8 overall, which includes a 5-2 record in the playoffs. Their 18 wins marks the second-most ever in a baseball season. The school record remains with the 2016 squad, which finished in third place in Section 6A with a 19-7 final record. In the regular season, the Jaguars won a share of the Central Minnesota Conference title. They are the first team to do this, and they join the 1995 squad as the only baseball teams to win conference hardware. Back in 1995, the Jaguars went 12-2 to earn a co-championship in the West Central South Conference.
The careers of 9 talented seniors comes to a close at B-B-E. They will be dearly missed. All 9 played with tremendous pride and class, most of them across multiple sports at B-B-E as a Jaguar student athlete. They will all go on to do great things in life!
Here's a short video featuring action as the top of the 2nd inning closed today:
It became a nerve-wracking and emotional game as it wore on. It was completely up for grabs right through the bottom of the 7th inning. As shown in this video, the Jaguars had a handful of opportunities to score, but it was not meant to be.
Here's a video from the top of the 3rd inning, when the Jaguars scored their lone run of the game:
Both teams were fired up from start to finish. They played with great energy, emotion and enthusiasm. That's all you can ask for out of high school players. In this last video, which lasted over 9 minutes, No. 5-batter Aiden Mueller had an incredible at bat that lasted multiple pitches. I didn't count, but it was at least 10! He ended up hitting a deep fly ball to centerfield.
As difficult as it will be, now we move on from this loss, and we will root and cheer for the next wave of athletes coming up the ranks in Jaguar Country!
Parents mocking opposing players when their own team wins should be called out!
Parkers Prairie has a tremendous baseball team, and they take a 22-3 record into the state tournament. I saw and heard nothing negative about their team throughout the game. It was truly a terrific high school baseball game. Their players and coaches have a right to be proud. They earned it.
The post-game celebration by Parkers Prairie was significantly marred, however, when a group of Parkers Prairie parents chose to yell words of mockery against one of B-B-E's players. It's one of those things that you really don't believe while it is happening. To hear the shouting coming from their fan section, and then asking others if they heard the same thing...a neutral observer also heard what I heard. A team ally of ours heard what I heard. It was SICKENING. It is uncalled for.
My sports reporting tenure began in August 2003, so I've been doing this just a few months shy of 22 years now. I can't recall that ever happening from a team that wins. There can be very hard feelings coming from a losing team. I've seen a wide range of emotions and responses from teams and players who lose big games. I'm not saying that losing justifies poor behavior, but that is a different situation than what I witnessed today. To see a winning team's fan section - PARENTS no less - display what I saw today is taking it to a new level. I've seen DOZENS of state-qualifying section games since the 2003-2004 winter basketball season, and until today, I've never experienced this. It's a rotten shame. It does take away from the great accomplishment of Parkers Prairie's baseball team.
Here's a quick way to put this into perspective: if a quarterback of a team throws an interception that leads to his team losing, who in their right minds from the winning team would go to that quarterback after the game and thank him for throwing the costly interception? You just don't do that. Really! Who would do that? Only a person with zero class and no shame whatsoever would do such a thing.
Our family is currently raising two three-sport athletes, and it is very important that my daughters and their teammates learn how to win with class and how to lose with class. This is a MUST! This is not optional. That is one of the highest priorities of youth sports and prep sports. Honestly, I think the only thing more important is to be a good teammate!
I've got more to say, but that will be for another day.
Now it's late Thursday night, and I've got another thought. I think this would help balance this out. This would bring back some FAIRNESS in a situation that was completely, totally unfair to our team. I would like to see those Parkers Prairie fans responsible for the taunting to be identified and then barred from going to the state tournament. I feel that is something within the bounds of what Parkers Prairie school officials could do. They need to own this. Find the parents or adults who were conducting this bizarre, abhorrent behavior, and tell them that they are not welcome to go to the state tournament games. What will happen at state if they go? How bad would that look for Parkers Prairie if these fans continue this behavior at the game's biggest stage? I think Parkers Prairie is gambling if these adults attend state and are a part of the Parkers Prairie fan section.
JUST MY TWO CENTS.
To those Parkers Prairie fans: you were caught taunting on MY audio! I got you. I'm uploading the video now. You are heard in the final seconds of the clip. We'll let that play for the whole world to take in. Your behavior would be "questionable" if this was a town team baseball game. I could see that, and I'd probably overlook it...but this was a high school game. What you did was completely out of bounds.
Here's the video featuring the game-winning hit and the post-game celebration by the Parkers Prairie players:
...in the final seconds of the video, you can hear some of the "extracurriculars" being hurled by Parkers Prairie fans. I know what was said. I was on the field when it happened. Some of what you said was caught in the last 6 seconds of my video's audio. In a small town, it would not be that difficult to figure out who that man was. He needs to be identified and called out! How DARE you do that in a moment that followed your team becoming the victor. Such a shameful individual!
For Parkers Prairie, it was an exciting moment, and the post-game dog pile out at second base was something those players will never forget. They earned it! Good for them. The adult behavior attached to this really was unfortunate. That's the most diplomatic way I can say it.
Before commenting on sports, I want to share this website link, which will redirect you to coverage (video) of the Belgrade VFW Memorial Day program. Here's that link: https://shorturl.at/BPkr3. Side note: because I got sidetracked by visiting too long with a handful of children of the late Ozzie and Ruth Stepan at the Brooten Pavilion on Memorial Day, I arrived at the Belgrade VFW Memorial Day program about 3 minutes after it started. However, as anyone who knows any of the Stepan children, time spent visiting with any of them is about the best way anyone could spend their time!
And in sports news...today is the big day!
This is the day our B-B-E Jaguars baseball team has worked towards for the past 12 months. One year ago, the Jaguars suffered a gut-wrenching 11-10 extra-inning loss in the opening game of the Section 6A championship series. That loss ended their season. The victor that day was Parkers Prairie, who just happens to be their opponent today in Morris. The Jaguars and Panthers meet today at Chizek Field at 2:30 p.m. in what will hopefully be back-to-back playoff games. The Jaguars have to beat the Panthers in the 2:30 game in order to force a true winner-take-all game. The loser is done with the Section 6A runner-up trophy to show for it, while the winner of today's series gets a trip to the Class 1A state baseball tournament that takes place next week.
I still have a great deal to get done before heading west to Morris. Today's game will be aired on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood. They are at 107.1 FM on the radio dial, and they also stream online at https://www.kmgk1071.com. Game updates will be posted at this blog post after the first game gets rolling. So please pass the link to this blog post so others can follow along from near and far!
First pitch was at 2:28 p.m.
GAME UPDATES!
Parkers Prairie scored the game's first run in the first inning on a hit batsman, one walk and an infield hit.
After 4 innings, the score is tied 1-1. Brett DeRoo scored B-B-E's run in the top of the 3rd inning.
The final score will be posted in a NEW blog post before 5 p.m.
Cardiac-inducing comeback and shutout wins propel Jaguars to 6A finals
This was an incredible day of playoff action in Morris!
In back-to-back games facing teams they played just last week, the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team hung tough through more adversity with multiple players coming through in the clutch. In the first elimination game today at Rambow Field in Morris, the Jaguars trailed 4-1 against Border West going into the seventh inning. They proceeded to send 14 straight batters to the plate in the top of the 7th before the Buccaneers defense recorded their first out. Across those 14 batters, the Jaguars scored 11 runs on 5 hits plus a string of walks and hit batsmen. The three-run deficit became a 12-4 lead before three outs came on the 15th, 16th and 17th B-B-E batters. The Jaguars scored 2 more runs on Cameron Loe's fielder's choice with a Border West error.
By the time Border West was up to bat in the bottom of the 7th, they trailed 14-4. B-B-E closer Brett DeRoo then took down the Buccaneers in order on a ground ball and two fly balls. Final score: B-B-E 14, Border West 4.
Game two today did not feature quite the drama of the first game, with B-B-E senior Ethan Mueller pitching a true gem and earning a complete-game shutout win by a 4-0 score against Upsala/Swanville Area. This improved their overall record to 18-7 as they advance to the program's fourth straight section championship series. They also played in the section finals in 2019.
NEXT: the Jaguars have a day to practice before turning to action on Thursday this week. Their next game is at 2:30 p.m. at Chizek Field in Morris. The opponent will be Parkers Prairie, who defeated U/SA today 9-1 in the Section 6A semifinals. The Patriots led 1-0 in the first inning and had an early surge going with the bases loaded on one out. The Panthers dug in, and they did not allow another run to be scored while they reeled off 9 unanswered runs. A lead of 3-1 for Parkers Prairie was expanded on when they scored 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Panthers are 21-3 overall. They were 12-2 in the Park Region Conference to win the title alone.
The Jaguars need revenge on their minds, as they owe Parkers Prairie for the gut-wrenching loss they suffered one year ago in the Section 6A finals. Last year, at Clarissa's ball field, the Jaguars lost 11-10 in 8 innings. The Panthers then blazed their way to the state finals before losing 4-1 to Springfield at Target Field in Minneapolis on June 21, 2024.
GAME DAY! Again, back west in Stevens County (UPDATES!! JAGUARS STAY ALIVE!)
Today's Section 6A elimination bracket playoff game in Morris will be aired on Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood. They stream online at https://www.kmgk1071.com. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m. at Rambow Field in Morris.
The B-B-E Jaguars baseball team is facing Border West for the second time in this current playoff run. The Buccaneers advanced with a 9-7 win against Brandon-Evansville yesterday. Their approximate overall record is 14-6, according to what I know. B-B-E, meanwhile, is 16-7 overall.
The stakes are HUGE, of course, as the Jaguars need at least 2 more wins to earn a spot in the Section 6A championship series. There is no need to think ahead, however, as they must beat Border West today to stay alive.
Game updates to follow.
GAME updates against Border West...
The Jaguars are the visiting team on the scoreboard. Luke Illies is B-B-E's starting pitcher.
After one complete inning: the score is zero to zero. After 2 1/2 innings:B-B-E 1, Border West 0; Brett DeRoo earned a one-out walk and later scored the game's first run. After four complete innings: B-B-E 1, Border West 1. After five complete innings: Border West 4, B-B-E 1. After the top of the sixth: Border West 4, B-B-E 1; the Jaguars were robbed on a ground ball play at first base. Three men stranded. That hurts in a bad way.
UPDATE!! the Buccaneers are running out of pitchers, as we are in the top of the 7th inning, and the Jaguars have taken a 7-4 lead!!!! Woo Hoo! I am hitting the road to Sauk Centre now with my daughter and the 11-U fastpitch softball team for their 2025 season opener.
FINAL SCORE:B-B-E 14, Border West 4. The season continues! The Jaguars improve to 17-7 overall with the huge playoff win, and they have to win yet another elimination game today to play tomorrow. Next: at about 5:30 p.m. today, the Jaguars face Upsala/Swanville Area in another playoff rematch. The U/SA Patriots lost 9-1 to Parkers Prairie this afternoon in Morris in a game played at Chizek Field. That game was the true Section 6A semifinal and also the winner's bracket final; it featured the top seeds from each subsection.
The Jaguars owe the Patriots, as B-B-E did not play particularly well last Thursday in their 3-1 loss to the Patriots. Just 2 hits were recorded by the Jaguars in that tough loss. This is time for REDEMPTION!
For now, I'll post updates on this blog post. I haven't decided when I'll get a new blog post added here. The upcoming playoff game will be played at Chizek Field in Morris. I'm checking on what time it should begin. My guess is about 5:30 p.m. Upsala/Swanville Area is 16-6 overall after today's loss to the Panthers.
UPDATE: at 5:26 p.m., Brady's pre-game coverage started for the U/SA vs. B-B-E baseball game. The game started at 5:28 p.m., and the Jaguars are the visitors on the scoreboard and will bat first. Ethan Mueller is B-B-E's starting pitcher.
**After 2 innings: B-B-E 2, U/SA 0.
FINAL:B-B-E 4, U/SA 0. The Jaguars advance to their 4th straight section championship series!!
Next: the Section 6A championship series, starting at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Morris.
THANK YOU to Paul J. Gruber of Elrosa for sponsoring this playoff baseball blog post!
Cameron Loe saves the day: Jaguars win walk-off vs. Cowboys (VIDEO)
In one of the most exciting playoff wins in memory for the B-B-E Jaguars baseball team, their season stays alive at least one more game after they won a walk-off by a 7-6 score against Breckenridge today. The game in Morris featured plenty of adversity for the Jaguars to overcome. The sixth and seventh inning proved huge, as they scored 5 needed runs for the win across those two frames.
With two in scoring position, junior Cameron Loe (No. 7 hitter) crushed a 2 RBI-double to left-center and the outfield fence. Game over! B-B-E 7, Breckenridge 6.
Luke Illies earned the pitching win in relief of starter Aiden Mueller. It was a tremendous effort by both pitchers to hold off a talented Cowboys team.
More to come, including what happens next. UPDATE: the next game is set to begin at about 2:30 p.m. back in Morris, according to what Brady said on Smooth Magic 107. I will check around and see what I find out.
UPDATE: due to a storm delay, the Jaguars will play at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3 back in Morris. This will be another elimination game. The opponent will be Border West or Brandon-Evansville.
UPDATE on Monday night: in their next Section 6A elimination bracket game, the Jaguars (16-7 overall) will face Border West in a rematch of last Thursday's first game of the day. The Border West Buccaneers prevailed in another exciting game today at Morris by a 9-7 score against Brandon-Evansville. The Chargers, champions of the Little Eight Conference this spring, finish 15-8 overall.
Here's a video from the Upsala/Swanville Area game last Thursday; featuring a top of the 7th inning rally that was not enough:
The U/SA Patriots won that game by a 3-1 score to advance in the winner's bracket.
To see a video from the postgame huddle after the playoff opener, click over to the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper website: https://shorturl.at/dNTUq.
I don't have Border West's precise overall record; their games are incomplete on Minnesotascores-dot-net, which is extremely strange considering that the QRF scale was used for seeding purposes.
In other news...
The Bonanza Valley area received over an inch of much-needed rain this afternoon. The rain fell mid-afternoon, and Brooten received about 1 1/4 inches.
In case you missed it, I encourage you to watch the Brooten American Legion Memorial Day program! It was fantastic. You can see it by clicking over to the newspaper's website: https://shorturl.at/OBvPt.

Here's a video featuring the end of the Brandon-Evansville win back in May:
The Jaguars won that game by a 10-0 score in 6 innings in the Max Bats Wood Bat Invitational in Elrosa.
