The Jaguars fell to Border West 42-27. In the other duals at Browerville, they lost to West Central Area by a slim margin, 37-30 - and then lost to host Browerville/Eagle Valley 36-34.

The Jaguars stormed in front of West Central Area/Ashby, winning five of the first six matches while building a lead of 24-3. The momentum then shifted towards the Knights, as they cut into the deficit to make the score 30-13. WCA/Ashby then took the final four classes, two by forfeit, to score the final 24 points of the match while erasing the 30-13 deficit.

The wrestling team of Border West comes from the schools of Clinton/Graceville/Beardsley, Wheaton Area, and Herman-Norcross. This is the second year of that merger. They won the Section 6A title last year to advance to the state tournament.

The last Cubs wrestling squad to win 20 matches was their 1997-98 team, which defeated B-B-E in the Section 6A championship to advance to the state tournament. The Jaguars wrestling team had two section championship appearances in a row, as they lost to Pierz in the 1999 6A title match.

Jaguars Girls Basketball is on the air tonight, hosting #1-ranked Sauk Centre on 106.5 FM the Train

The visiting Mainstreeters (17-0) scored the first eight points of the game, helped by a couple easy fastbreak buckets.

Rachel Anderson scored the first points of the game for the Jaguars, getting fouled on a paint shot. She missed the free throw, with the score sitting at 8-2.

With 13:36 on the clock, the Mainstreeters had built a 15-2 lead, prompting the Jaguars into a timeout.

After trailing 30-6, junior Maggie Gruber heated things up for the Jaguars to fuel a 9-2 run, scoring all points of the surge.

Halftime score: Sauk Centre 34, B-B-E 15.

After the Mainstreeters went up 47-17, the Jaguars made another run to cut the gap to 47-27. Lauren Anderson started the 10-0 run, then Maggie Gruber scored eight unanswered points.

Gruber went 6-of-6 at the free throw line, totaling 16 points in the game.

Jaguars Girls Basketball wins second in a row - throttles Maple Lake 47-25, Jaguars boys hoops bury Holdingford, Jaguars wrestling drubs HL-W-W 43-24

Julie Hieserich anchors the top of the defensive set against Kimball on Tuesday night. She tallied five points and five assists at Maple Lake tonight.

The Jaguars girls basketball team improves to 4-10 overall and 3-4 in the Central Minnesota Conference with their convincing win over the host Irish, who fell to 4-13 overall.

After building a 20-8 lead with about four minutes left in the first half, the Irish picked up their intensity to make it a nine-point game with a three-pointer at 1:08 on the clock. A 10-foot jump shot from sophomore guard Raeann Sorenson made it 24-13 as the clock wound out.

The first half turnover margin favored the visitors, with the Jaguars giving up the ball eight times and the Irish 11. B-B-E went 3-of-6 at the free throw line, with the Irish going 2-of-2.

The Jaguars poured it on in the second half beginning with a four-of-four performance at the free throw line by Rachel Anderson and Sorenson. The Jaguars held the Irish to six points of offense over a span of 14 minutes in the second half.

Sophomore forward Shyan Kuefler led the Jaguars with 10 points and seven rebounds in the game. Though she was the only Jaguar in double figures scoring, she was one of nine Jaguars who hit the scoring column. In fact, after the first 19 minutes of the game were gone, those nine players had scored.

While they may be 4-10 overall, the Jaguars have a great shot at finishing with 12 or more wins, as eight of their final 12 games of the regular season are at the home gymnasium. Even a record of 13-13 would put them in a good position in Sub-Section 6A-South this March.

Smooth Magic 107 FM of Glenwood carried tonight's Central Minnesota Conference matchup.

More on the game will follow later.

Results from the Jaguars Triangular wrestling meet:
B-B-E 43, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 24
Pierz 42, B-B-E 20

The win over HL-W-W marks the fifth dual meet win this season for the Jaguars wrestling squad.

The Jaguars boys basketball team improved to 13-2 overall tonight with a 30+ point win at Holdingford, a 77-45 final score. They have now equaled the win-loss record of last year's squad through the first 15 games.

The Jaguars were led by Kevin Kuefler's 23 points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen Aaron Waller picked up the first varsity points of his career.

The Huskers fall to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in the CMC.

This was a good comment on the West Central Tribune website, regarding cuts to nursing home care

(Regarding Bethesda Health & Housing's new capital campaign drive)

"I am glad Bethesda's trying to make aging fun, and also investing in the health of our aging population. But will it be enough to off-set the Pawlenty budget rampage, where getting old, sick or being in a nursing home pretty much makes you like a prairie dog with old Tim sitting there with an AK-47. Get healthy old people, get in shape, because the gov and his buddies see the infirm as an inconvenience on society and their bank accounts."

This will shake things up, Eden Valley-Watkins head football coach Ray Tri retires

Coach Tri has led the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles to the top of the Central Minnesota Conference for the past four seasons.

He’s retiring after 26 years as the Eagles’ head coach, compiling a 161-101 record, seven section championships, a state runner-up in 2004, and a state championship in 2005.

A full story is in today's St.Cloud Times by Tom Elliot.

The Eagles first advanced to the State Tournament after winning Section 5AA in 1997. That year, they defeated the B-B-E Jaguars 14-12 in the section title game, held in Eden Valley.

Jaguars Wrestling has another strong showing, places fourth at tough NL-S Invitational - Tensen & Borgerding earn titles

Senior Cole Tensen won the 145-pound championship at NL-S on Friday night.

Sophomore Dillon Knutson took third place for the Jaguars in the 160-pound division, going 3-1 in his bracket.

The Jaguars wrestling team piled up 128 team points to take fourth place, edging Class AA Litchfield (127.5) and Big Lake (119) at the New London-Spicer Invitational on Friday night. Most telling about how well they did was that they took fourth while giving up three open weights (112, 215, Hwt).

Two Jaguars won titles: Senior Cole Tensen at 145, and junior Ben Borgerding at 171. It's Borgerding's first gold medal at a tournament in his career.

At the 152-pound division, senior Travis Winter suffered his second loss of the season, losing to Benson's Ryan Thompson in the championship match by a 7-2 margin. Thompson improved to 26-1 this season after winning the 152-pound bracket.

Four other Jaguars placed in the Final Four: Ross Rath, Austin Jaeger, Brent Goodenbour, and Dillon Knutson. Patrick Rooney took fifth place.

**Update on Sunday - shining moments for the Jaguars: Highlights include Ross Rath winning in the 103-pound semi-finals in a 4-3 decision, a tight 7-6 decision by Brent Goodenbour in the 135-pound third place match. The whole town of Sauk Centre goes dark - boys basketball and hockey games both suspended

The entire town of Sauk Centre went dark tonight at approximately 8:30pm. Shown are members of the Sauk Centre Fire Department directing traffic at a dead stoplight downtown.

**Update on Saturday morning... Ice accumulations caused a power transmission pole to snap Friday evening, leading to a massive power outage in Sauk Centre. The broken pole was located near Interstate Highway 94 west of the city. Ice also caused traffic problems in and near St. Cloud.

Sauk will be without power until at least midnight tonight. Not fun! Especially if you're burning wood or you have to re-light a pilot on your fuel oil burner.

**It's really really bad out there, folks! The roads are completely iced over, and I doubt the highway crews will be able to treat them fast enough to keep ahead of the ice build-up.

During the ice storm, the Jaguars Boys basketball team hammers Pierz 82-61 - Jaguars sit alone in first place in the CMC!

Junior center Brandon DeKok had a great game off of the bench tonight for the Jaguars; the role of the 6th, 7th, and 8th guys off the bench has been key to the Jaguars' surprising eight-game winning streak.

To start the first half, the Jaguars (11-2) came back from an initial 5-2 deficit to jump in front by as much as 26-12 before the Pioneers made a run. Pierz closed the gap to 31-27 before the Jaguars put the throttle down and pulled away going into the break, leading 45-29 at halftime.

They improve to 5-1 in the Central Minnesota Conference. Leading scorers were Matt Goodwin with 21 points, Kevin Kuefler with 18, and Brady Koehler with 15.

Pierz is 1-11 overall and 1-4 in the CMC.

With the win over the Pioneers and a loss by Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted tonight, the Jaguars now sit in first place alone in the CMC. It's a long ways to go to win the title, though - they've got eight more games in the league to get through before there's anything of substance to talk about. They will get stiff challenges from Eden Valley-Watkins (twice), Rockford, and even Kimball.

Rockford 60, Kimball Area 58 OT (Rockets pick up a huge win at Kimball)

A noteworthy comment on the St.Cloud Times website, below a story talking about local job losses in central Minnesota

As a person who was eliminated from my company, took 4.5 months to find new employment and take nearly 5.00/HOUR paycut...be happy you are employed. If you are so bitter about a pay cut, we are all getting pay cuts. You are not alone. It's a part of life now - time to deal with it instead of gripe about it. Enough already. Really. Life could be worse - learn to live with less. It's not so bad afterall. And I can say that, because I've BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. :-)

Coming Thursday/Friday/Saturday for the Jaguars

Thursday: Jaguars girls basketball at Rockford. The Rockets, who are having their best season since 2006-2007, are 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the Central Minnesota Conference. They buried Kimball on the Cubs' court last Friday night 75-50. Rockford went 8-19 last season, and 7-20 overall in 2007-2008.

The Jaguars wrestling team hosts Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd on Thursday night. LQPV/D-B is a strong Class AA team that finished 20-8 in duals and made the Section 3AA Final Four last season; they are 10-4 in duals so far this year and 6-2 in the West Central South Conference.

Friday: Jaguars wrestling at the NL-S tournament (3:30) - Jaguars boys basketball hosts Pierz. Pierz is 1-10 overall and 1-3 in the CMC.

Teams wrestling at the NL-S tournament include Benilde-St. Margaret's, Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie, Big Lake, Benson, Litchfield, Eden Valley-Watkins, and the host Wildcats.

Saturday: Jaguars danceline performs at the Albany Invitational, which begins at 11:00am. The Albany school website lists a total of 10 teams at the Invitational, but another source told me they'll only have a total of four schools represented. Tomorrow I'll find out just how many teams will be there.

Jaguars Boys Basketball pulls into first place in the Central Minnesota Conference, wins 67-61 over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted

The Jaguars boys basketball team improved to 10-2 overall with a hard-fought 67-61 win against CMC rival Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted tonight. The Jaguars, who enjoyed a huge 37-23 rebounding edge in the game, expanded a 30-28 halftime lead to as much as 20 points in the second half. HL-W-W then rained three-pointers to close the deficit and make the Jaguars sweat down the stretch.

Scoring leaders for the Jaguars: Connor Goodwin 18, Kevin Kuefler 16 and Brady Koehler 13.

Both teams are now tied at the top of the Central Minnesota Conference at 4-1 in the league. Rockford and Maple Lake are both a 1/2 game back at 3-1 in the league. A Maple Lake win in the St.John's Prep Holiday tournament on December 19 over Holdingford did not count as a CMC game.

The conference race is on!

The Pierz Pioneers won their first game of the season, defeating the visiting Kimball Area Cubs 46-40. Pierz is now 1-10 overall, which is just crazy in my mind!

Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted dips below .500 overall at 5-6 with tonight's loss to the Jaguars. Kimball is 2-2 in the CMC after tonight's loss at Pierz.

In a meeting of girls basketball giants at Sauk Centre tonight, the host number-one ranked Mainstreeters edged number-two ranked New London-Spicer 63-58 in a West Central North Conference showdown. The Mainstreeters, who improve to 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the WCCN, led 37-29 at halftime. The Wildcats cut the lead to 42-41 with 12:05 left, and then played a 2 to 3-possession game the rest of the way; the closest they got down the stretch was a 54-52 deficit.

NL-S falls to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the WCCN with the loss.

Jaguars Danceline to perform at Albany on Saturday, January 23

Jaguars Danceline performs at Albany on Saturday

The B-B-E Jaguars danceline team will perform at the Albany Invitational this Saturday.

The meet, which begins at 11:00am, will consist of Swanville, B-B-E, Brooklyn Center, and the host Albany Huskies. A total of seven routines will be performed, including JV performances. It will conclude at about 12:30pm.

This week the Jaguars girls basketball team host Paynesville Area (1-10) on Monday night, then travel to Rockford (3-2 CMC, 10-5) on Thursday and Kimball (2-3 CMC, 8-4) next Tuesday, January 26.

**The big game of the week is on Tuesday night, when the Jaguars boys basketball team hosts Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The Lakers (4-0 CMC, 5-5 overall) are alone at the top of the Central Minnesota Conference. A win by the Jaguars would pull them into a first-place tie with HL-W-W while keeping the door open for a second straight conference title. It would be awesome, no doubt!

God frosts the trees on Friday morning

A couple stories on the Battle Lake-Parkers Prairie girls basketball game last night

Battle Lake Girls Knock Off Top Ranked Panthers
by Craig Olson

The Battle Lake girls basketball team pulled off a huge upset in high school girls basketball when they beat the top-ranked, unbeaten Parkers Prairie Panthers 54-53 in Battle Lake on Friday night.

The game was tied 24-24 at the half. With seven seconds left on the clock, Carley Nelson made a pair of free throws to put the Battlers up by one point. Lindsay Nelson then drew a charge with just one-tenth of a second remaining to end it.

"The score stayed very close the whole way tonight," stated head coach David Marso of the lady Battlers. "Our girls really worked hard defensively and played with a lot of energy. Both teams really gave a tremendous effort tonight and we were fortunate to get this win."

Carley Nelson came up big again for Battle Lake, scoring 13 points in each half as she attacked the Parkers Prairie defense on the drive. She also converted all seven of her free throw opportunities, finishing with a game high 26 points. Lindsay Nelson added 10 points and Kim Seidel pulled down 8 rebounds and nailed 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch. As a team the Battlers hit 41% of their field goal attempts and went 14-for-19 on the foul line.

Parkers Praire (11-1) was led by Sari Noga with 17 points and Madison Dorn with 14 points.

The win was the fourth in a row for Battle Lake and puts them at 6-4 on the season. They are now tied with the Panthers for the Little Eight Conference lead with a record of 4-1. Battle Lake will travel to Evansville on Tuesday night to face the Brandon/Evansville Chargers.

Still don't believe it - Battle Lake girls basketball shocks Parkers Prairie, 54-53 final score - Jaguars girls basketball loses to Pierz

I still don't believe it and I need to hear it from a different source before I do believe it, but apparently tonight at Battle Lake, the host Battler girls basketball team tagged Parkers Prairie with their first loss of the season.

The Panthers, who are ranked number one in the latest Class A poll, fall to 11-1. Battle Lake improves to 6-4 overall and pulls into a first-place tie with the Panthers in the Little Eight Conference with a 4-1 league record.

In a home game tonight, the Jaguars girls basketball team fell to Pierz by a 60-52 score in a Central Minnesota Conference game. The Jaguars (1-9) host Paynesville on Monday night in a non-conference game. Pierz improves to 7-6 overall with the win and 3-2 in the CMC.

The Jaguars, who played only seven players in the game, built a 30-21 lead at halftime. The visiting Pioneers bombed without mercy from long range in the first two minutes of the second half, though, draining four three-point shots to regain control.

Tonight's win at Kimball was the first CMC loss for the Cubs this season, as they move to 5-4 overall. It puts HL-W-W at the top of the CMC as the lone unbeaten team. Up next for the boys basketball team: Tomorrow night at home against Class AA Osakis. The Silverstreaks are 6-2 and tough as nails - it will be a battle. The Jaguars will be playing for pride but also want to keep winning to maintain a shot at taking a number one playoff seed in Sub-Section 6A-South.

In Jaguars girls basketball action, final score out of northern Douglas County: Parkers Prairie 81, B-B-E 35. The Panthers, who are in Sub-Section 6A-South with the Jaguars, remain undefeated at 10-0 and appear unstoppable as they've been tearing up the competition this season. They've held eight teams below 38 points and three under 30. Shyan Kuefler led the Jaguars with seven points; as the team, they made only 13 field goals on the night.

Jaguars Boys Basketball roughs up Brandon-Evansville 73-51 on Saturday afternoon - Jaguars Danceline defeats Bagley, Barnesville, and Crookson

The Jaguars improve to 6-2 overall with the win over the fellow sub-section rival Brandon-Evansville Chargers this afternoon.

After a hot start in the first half where they opened up a 19-5 lead in the first nine minutes, Jaguars cooled down and let the Chargers make a run to close a big deficit to five points, 28-23 at the break.

The Jaguars had a couple big runs in the second half to blow the game open, leading 56-34 with under nine minutes left in the game.

The Chargers fall to 1-9 overall with the loss.

Interesting fact: Two Central Minnesota Conference teams who won or shared a string of conference titles from 2003 through 2008, Rockford and Pierz, are a combined 3-16 to start this season. The 0-9 record of Pierz is very deceiving, though, as they've played a brutal schedule against very good Class AA and AAA competition.

The Jaguars Danceline performed at the 14th annual Alexandria Cardinal Invitational this afternoon.

They defeated three teams in the Class A Jazz Funk division, totaling 13 teams. They placed 10th, ahead of Bagley, Barnesville, and Crookston.

**Further information from the Jaguars Wrestling Invitational on Friday night:

Travis Winter was voted Outstanding Wrestler by the tournament coaches.

Individual champions, with Travis and Cole at the upper left corner.

Seniors Cole Tensen (145) and Travis Winter (152) both earned championship titles at the very tough eight-team invitational. Tensen won a tight 2-1 decision over A-C-GC's Matt Meyer, while Winter won a 12-4 major decision over Trevor Mahlum of K-M-S.

Ross Rath at 103, Brent Goodenbour at 135, Patrick Rooney at 140, and Ben Borgerding at 171 all earned runner-up honors at the tournament for the Jaguars.

Tyler Tensen (112) earned fourth place, while Dillon Knutson and Austin Jaeger made it to the semi-finals but then lost out, missing Final Four berths yet helping out with additional team points for their performances.

Jaguars Wrestling has outstanding showing on the home mats in their own invitational, fourth place finish with Tensen and Winter both winning titles

The Jaguars Wrestling team had its strongest showing in years at the Jaguar Invitational on Friday night, finishing with 127 points to take fourth behind third-place Ottertail Central's 138 points. I believe they haven't placed that high in a home invitational since the 2001-2002 season.

Seniors Cole Tensen (145 pounds) and Travis Winter (152 pounds) each won individual championships to lead the Jaguars. Winter is ranked #2 in the most recent Guillotine ranking in the 160-pound division; his record this year stands at 15-0.
