On the eve of the celebration of Christ's birth let us truly remember what is important, respect and love for one another no matter the differences, kindness when we don't want to be kind, making an effort to find good in everything and to thank God for lessons learned.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Photos by John Starner, Herman-Hoffman Tribune

West Central Area, who is a solid Class AA team that plays in the Heart O' Lakes Conference, hung around with the Jaguars in the first half tonight, trailing 41-32 at the break after holding a lead through 12 minutes of play.

The Jaguars pulled away in the second half, tearing up the court while outscoring the Knights by a 45-27 margin. They scored the final nine points of the game.

Final score from A-C-GC high school tonight: B-B-E 86, WCA 58. The Knights fall to 3-2 overall, while the Jaguars improved to 5-0. Five Jaguars hit double figures in the blowout win. The Knights shot (19-48) 40% while the Jaguars hit (33-64) 52% of their shots (68% from two point range, 28-of-41).

The Jaguars are next in action on Monday night, when they host neighboring rival Paynesville Area in a non-conference game. The Bulldogs don't have the greatest squad this year, but as a rule you always throw the records out when these two teams meet.

That game will be aired on both 106.5FM The Train as well as Smooth Magic 107.1FM of Glenwood. Pre-game coverage begins at 7:15pm.

Back and forth affair plays out between BBE and HLWW in girls basketball action, Lakers win 65-61

In a showdown between two contenders in the Central Minnesota Conference this season, the Jaguars girls basketball team jumped out to early leads over visiting Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted tonight. Scores in favor of the Jaguars at 6-2, 11-7, and 17-12 soon evaporated, though, as the Lakers snuck ahead 20-19 with 9:50 left in the first half.

With 5:34 left in the first half, the Jaguars led 26-24. They led 31-28 with a little over two minutes left before the Lakers made a big run to go in front 36-32. (See video clip below)

At halftime: HL-W-W 36, B-B-E 34.

The Jaguars fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second half, then went on a terrific 15-3 run to take a 53-52 lead with about 8:00 left in the game.

With 4:10 to play, the Lakers held a 61-55 lead. The Jaguars cut it down to two points with 34 seconds remaining.

Final score: HL-W-W 65, B-B-E 61. The Lakers went 13-of-20 from the free throw line; the Jaguars were 18-of-23. The Lakers made eight three point shots, while the Jaguars made three. That was the key difference in the game.

Both teams are now .500 overall and 1-1 in the CMC, with B-B-E at 2-2 and HL-W-W at 3-3.

The last time the Jaguars have defeated the Lakers in girls basketball was February 11, 2005. Final score, 52-46 in a game played at Howard Lake. The Jaguars were on their way to a comeback after losing eight in a row to fall to 3-8 on the season. The win over the Lakers brought them to 8-13 overall. They went on to finish as Sub-Section 5A-South champions that season, losing to Underwood in the Section 5A championship 57-51.

Check back for more video/photos over the weekend. Hopefully many of you will be at A-C-GC High School in Grove City on Saturday night, when the Jaguars boys basketball team is in action against West Central Area. Tip-off is 8pm.

The final 28 seconds of the first half plays out, with Shyan Kuefler launching a successful outside shot from the wing as time expired. The bucket made it a 36-34 deficit at the half for the Jaguars.

Jaguars boys basketball team's slim halftime lead holds to the end in a 56-54 win at Sauk Centre

We'll just say, it's been a battle. Sauk Centre has been playing some outstanding defense.

The Streeters (2-3) took early leads of 5-4 and 14-9 before the Jaguars went on an 8-2 run to go up 18-16. It was neck and neck from there until the Jaguars pulled ahead 30-25 at halftime.

In the second half, Sauk Centre snuck ahead a couple times, leading 49-48 with under three minutes to go.

With 2:20 left in the game, the Jaguars held a slim 51-49 lead.

The game went down to the wire, with Sauk Centre taking a 49-48 lead with a little over two minutes remaining. The Jaguars then took a four point lead when Kevin Kuefler took it coast to coast for a layup and a 53-49 lead before the Streeters cut it to a 53-52 game.

Kuefler made three of four free throws in the final minute to ice the game. The Streeters launched a shot at the buzzer that was counted as time expired, making it 56-54.

The Jaguars improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Streeters dipped below .500 at 2-3 overall. The B-squad Jaguars defeated the Mainstreeters 70-30.

Up next for the Jaguars boys basketball team: (hopefully) a short trip to A-C-GC high school for the championship game of the 2010 pre-season clash, where they will face West Central Area at 8:00pm.

WCA (3-1) just lost to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in a Heart O' Lakes Conference game tonight in a high scoring affair 83-72 for their first loss of the season. D-G-F (2-2) went an unheard of 14-of-24 from three-point land to spoil the Knights' home opener.

A hard-to-believe boys basketball score: Kimball Area 33, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 31. Kimball (4-0) had three wins over sub par opponents before facing the previously-undefeated Thunder in the a tournament opener hosted by the Cubs. I'm anxious to hear more on that game.

It's common knowledge among followers of the Central Minnesota Conference that the boys' side of the league this winter will be stronger than it was last year. Kimball's win tonight shows just that.

Jaguars girls basketball improves to 2-1 after drubbing Maple Lake in the Central Minnesota Conference opener - Jaguars boys hoops pound Benson

Final score from Maple Lake tonight: B-B-E 67, Maple Lake 35. Quite a win for the Jaguars! They shot 57% from the floor in the win, while out-rebounding the smaller Irish by a whopping 46-19 margin. Even more impressive was their 63% shooting mark from two-point range. Junior post Shyan Kuefler led the Jaguars with an impressive double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Maple Lake fell to 2-2 overall with the loss.

Two weeks into the season, the Jaguars girls basketball team leads the CMC with a 65 points per game offensive average. Defensively, they are third best out of the eight teams in the league at 46.3 points per game.

Central Minnesota Conference girls basketball results from Dec. 14:
Eden Valley-Watkins 60, Kimball Area 27
Pierz 56, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 48
Holdingford 75, Rockford 69

Pierz squares their record at 2-2; HLWW falls to 2-3. The Lakers travel to Belgrade to face the Jaguars this Friday night in another CMC game. Holdingford picked up their first win of the year vs. Rockford after two blowout losses to neighbors Albany and Upsala.

It should be a fun CMC girls basketball race this season. At least after seeing results of two of the opening-night games, it appears as though there are haves and have-nots in the league.

Scouting report from the HLWW vs. Pierz girls game: the host Lakers led 7-0 right off the bat. The Pioneers scored a 6-0 run to get it to a 26-25 deficit at halftime. The surge continued in the second half, as the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run out of the locker room to go up 31-26. Pierz never trailed in the second half, stretching the lead as high as 10 points. The Pierz posts combined for 31 rebounds and 6 blocks. Thanks to Pierz head coach Rick Sczublewski for that information.

**A sports broadcasting note: the Friday night girls hoops game between HLWW and the Jaguars will be aired on 106.5FM The Train. So will Thursday night's boys hoops game at Sauk Centre. Tune in if you can't make the game!

In the home opener for the Jaguars boys basketball team tonight, against Roger Lindahl's senior-dominated Benson team no less, the visiting Braves went home with a big 73-53 loss. The Jaguars improve to 3-0 overall heading into Thursday night's showdown at Sauk Centre in another non-conference game.

Benson has eight seniors on their boys basketball roster this year.

I tell you, scoring 275 points in their first three games is quite an accomplishment! We'll see how they do against the Mainstreeters, who are much improved over last year's unit.

At the Kimball Tri, the Jaguars wrestling team lost by wide margins in duals with the host Cubs and the Annandale/Maple Lake Lightning.

Area girls basketball scores on December 14:

Blast from the past - preseason football previews in 1983

"Brooten is young Prairie contender"

With a total of 10 starters back, among a robust turnout of 39 players, Brooten will take aim at its first Prairie Conference title this fall since 1973.

"We're still basically a young team," notes veteran coach Jerry Lindstrom. "But I'm sure some teams will look at us as a contender." Brooten was 4-5 last year, including 4-3 in the Prairie after winning its first four league games.

All-conference quarterback Mike Marthaler is back for his third season after setting school records last year for pass attempts and completions. (74-176 for 950 yards) Catching a school-record 28 was Jim Remer, a running back moved to split end in the twin-set formation.

Remer, receiver Darrin Hatelstad, and fullback Chad Mithaugen are veterans as juniors.

Most of the line is returning starters: jr Loren Amundson (200 lbs) and seniors Paul Rooney (190), Brian Kollman, and Tony Hofmann.

All eight offensive returnees also started on defense last year. Senior end Dan Freese and junior cornerback Wade Hanson are the other defensive veterans.

"I'd say we're definitely the pick to win it," says Marthaler. "With ten starters back, I'm sure the other coaches are looking at us."

Marthaler, who trimmed himself down last spring for track, reported that he and his teammates made good use of the school's new weightlifting equipment over the summer.
Lindstrom sees Swanville and Eagle Bend as conference favorites.

1983 schedule for the Buccaneers - Belgrade, Kimball, Browerville, Grey Eagle, Clarissa, Swanville, Eagle Bend, Upsala, Verndale. (Final 7 games are Prairie)
1983 schedule for the Redmen - Brooten, Eden Valley-Watkins, Menahga, Sebeka, Parkers Prairie, Royalton, Brandon/Evansville, Elbow Lake-Wendell-Barrett, Osakis/Villard. (Final five games are Prairie Lakes)

In 1982, the Belgrade Redmen made it to the Dome and finished 12-1 with a 16-14 loss to Truman in the Prep Bowl, on a last-minute field goal. They won the Prairie Lakes title their first year in the league.

Pete Wengler as a sophomore in 1982 was the District 20A champion in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

In 1982, senior Paul Beuning carried the ball an average of 21 rushes per game.

In 1983, they'll play a five game Prairie Lakes Conference schedule. "Contending with the Redmen for the title should be Osakis, Parkers Prairie, and Brandon-Evansville. Osakis paired with Villard for the 1983 season, increasing its enrollment as the PLC's biggest school," stated the West Central Tribune.

A few notes on the HL-W-W Lakers' boys basketball win over pre-season Section 5AA favorite Watertown-Mayer tonight, courtesy of Howard Lake Herald Journal sports reporter Aaron Schultz... "HLWW was down by 15 to 20 midway through the second half, and then pressed, and made a comeback, capped by a 3-pointer by Corey Whitcomb with 2 seconds left to play. Was a pretty exciting game. The Lakers just kept chipping away. W-M missed free throws, and turned the ball over quit a bit in the second half." HL-W-W trailed by 10 at halftime. Jett Leaf led the Lakers with 31 points, Quin Leaf drained 20. A great game by both teams.

BBE vs. WCA boys basketball is postponed to December 18

Due to the impending blizzard that's coming to our area today and tomorrow, the boys basketball game between the Jaguars and West Central Area has been moved to December 18 in Grove City.

Thursday, December 09, 2010

A big win for the Jaguars girls basketball team vs. Ortonville, as they make the long trip back home with a 69-34 win

Picking up their first win of the 2010-2011 season, the B-B-E Jaguars girls basketball team annihilated the host Ortonville Trojans tonight in a non-conference game 69-34.

The Trojans fell to 1-2 overall. They dropped their season opener to Benson 63-42 on November 30, so tonight's game appeared to be up for grabs before tip-off.

Up next for the Jaguars girls basketball team: after going out west to the South Dakota border, the Jaguars will make the trip east down Highway 55 to Maple Lake next Tuesday (Dec. 14) for the Central Minnesota Conference opener against the Irish.

Coming tonight in a home wrestling match: the Jaguars wrestling team will host Maccray/Renville County West in a dual meet at the high school.

Area boys basketball results on December 9:
Minnewaska Area 69, Osakis 48
Sebeka 90, Upsala 76
Albany 61, Holdingford 35
Royalton 56, Onamia 55

Brandon-Evansville 58, Eagle Valley 46
Redwood Valley 61, BOLD 60 (that had to be a heck of a game!)
West Central Area 42, Hancock 40

My comment: it'll be a long season for boys basketball in Holdingford, I heard one of their top players quit the team recently.

Also, if you haven't heard already, the Jaguars boys basketball team faces WCA in the championship game at the A-C-GC tournament in Grove City this Saturday night. I'll confirm the start time on Friday and get it posted ASAP.

Area girls basketball results on December 9:

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 46, Kimball Area 37

More from the Jaguars boys basketball season opener vs. K-M-S

Connor Goodwin's shot from the left baseline in this photo put the Jaguars past the century mark, getting them to 101 points late in the second half.

It was the season opener...and the Jaguars were getting scouted already. (Pierz head coach is pictured prior to tip-off.)

A few notes from after the Melrose win: The last time B-B-E started 2-0 to the season in boys basketball was 2004-2005, when they finished 21-8 and as Section 5A runners-up.

The last Melrose win over B-B-E in boys hoops was in the 2006-2007 season when BBE finished 4-22.

In 2007-2008, the game was decided by 2 points (51-49W) in Belgrade. In 2009-2010, the game was decided by 1 point in Brooten (56-55W).

Coach Montbriand has 269 career wins. This is his 18th season at B-B-E. (1990-2005, 2008-present)

The Jaguars lined up for the National Anthem at A-C-GC on Saturday night.

The Jaguars boys basketball team opened up an early lead and never looked back in a first half in which they built a double-digit lead early and held onto it until the break.

Final score in a regular shootout: Jaguars 95, Dutchmen 84.

Jaguars boys basketball blows apart K-M-S in a 107-22 win to open the 2010-2011 season - Girls basketball drops close one at Benson

Kevin Kuefler wins the tip off for the 2010-2011 Jaguars boys basketball season tonight.

(Video) The 2010-2011 boys basketball season tips off for the Jaguars.

Brian Goodwin dribbles out of the backcourt late in the first half tonight at A-C-GC.

In their season opener tonight, the #6-ranked Jaguars boys basketball team led 68-13 at halftime over K-M-S in the opening round of the A-C-GC tournament. With 11:34 left in the first half, the Jaguars had opened up a 24-3 lead. With 4:09 left in the first half, four reserves were subbed in with the Jaguars leading 49-11.

Final score: 107-22 - a rout as I predicted. The telling sign about this team is that regardless of who is on the floor, starters or reserves, they are going to do all kinds of damage this season.

The championship game of the A-C-GC tournament will be held next Saturday night at 8:00pm. The opponent for the Jaguars will be West Central Area, who shook off some poor first half play and rebounded from a 27-20 halftime deficit to post a 63-53 win over the host A-C-GC Falcons.

Up next for the Jaguars boys basketball team: a trip to Melrose on Tuesday night to face the Class AA Dutchmen in a non-conference game of neighboring rivals.

A photo gallery from the boys basketball game has been uploaded to the Sauk Centre Herald's website. The link is: http://saukherald.mycapture.com

The 107 points scored is not a school record, as the Jaguars passed the century mark on December 17, 2007, against visiting E.C.H.O. Charter School. Here's a link to my blog post from that game, featuring a photo of Zach Roelike working down low...
http://bbejaguars.blogspot.com/2007/12/jaguars-boys-basketball-passes-century.html. During the second half of tonight's 107-22 win, the game clock did not stop until the final buzzer sounded. The game started at 6:10pm and finished exactly one hour later.

Just for fun, here's the boxscore from that 125-37 win in 2007: Scoring for B-B-E: Jordan Beier 21, Justin Mathiason 5, Steven Gruber 8 (8 rebounds, 3 steals), Michael Rodgers 13 (3 steals), Zach Roelike 10, Dusty Gruber 4 (7 assists), Jackson Illies 10, Shane Weller 10 (8 rebounds), Alex Thompson 4 (3 steals), Josh Roelike 8 (8 rebounds), Joey Gruber 3, Jared McCleary 7 (10 rebounds), Matt Goodwin 5, Ryan Weller 12 (8 rebounds), Kalle Kaitala 1

Action from the second half, with the Jaguars opening up an 81-13 lead with 14:20 left in the game.

More action from the second half, with the Jaguars leading 95-20.

With under a minute left in the first half, Brian Goodwin goes coast-to-coast with a driving layup in traffic for the first varsity points of his career. He snares a rebound 22 seconds into this video clip. I couldn't help but say "wow" when it happened.

At the Benson Fibrominn tournament tonight, the Jaguars girls basketball team trailed 41-20 at halftime against Benson. Final score: Benson 70, B-B-E 59. The Braves, who were sub-section runners-up in Section 6AA last year, have seven seniors on the roster.

In the other semi-final game of the Fibrominn tournament, MACCRAY defeated Prairie Seeds Academy 46-43.

PSA is a new charter school located in Brooklyn Park, MN. They are coached by the 1998 Miss Basketball winner, Tamara Moore, one of the most talented basketball players to ever play in Minnesota. She graduated from Minneapolis North High School in 1998 and starred with the Wisconsin Badgers from 1999-2002.

Moore then played in the WNBA for seven teams (Miami, Minnesota, Detroit, Phoenix, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston) in her six year career. Moore averaged 4.4 ppg in her pro career.

The Jaguars girls basketball team is in action next Thursday at non-conference Ortonville.

B-B-E wrestling invitational endures a blizzard - ends up with a fifth place finish and 110 points, most since 2005 - Daniel Rooney wins 140-lb class

Austin Jaeger is moments away from earning a pin in the third-place match of the 125-pound division against a guy from West Central Area tonight. The fall was earned in 53 seconds.

The Jaguars wrestling team had a great showing on the home mats tonight, taking fifth place in a very tough 8-team field to open the 2010-2011 season. The Jaguars were able to fill all 14 weight classes. Junior Daniel Rooney was the lone champion for the Jaguars, as he won the 140-pound division with a 3-0 record and two pins. A nice feather in their cap was beating Class AAA Willmar in the final standings. Team scores were: New London-Spicer 271.5, Eden Valley-Watkins 168.0, Holdingford 113.5, Yellow Medicine East 112.0, B-B-E 110.0, Willmar 106.0, West Central Area 77.0, Browerville/Eagle Valley 21.0.

New London-Spicer won the tournament for the sixth straight year. They were rated #7 in the pre-season Class AA Guillotine poll.

For comparison purposes, in 2006 at this tournament, the Jaguars tallied 56 points while finishing seventh. In 2007, they took sixth place with 48 team points. Last year, they totaled 99 team points with a fifth place finish.

Back in 2005, a season in which they ended up with three state entrants (March 2006), the Jaguars took fourth place at this tournament with 127 team points. One of those state entrants that year, then-senior Danny Borgerding, is now an assistant varsity coach with the team.

Sophomore Austin Jaeger wins in wrestlebacks at the season-opening B-B-E wrestling invitational tonight. He finished in 3rd place in the 125-pound division.

Sophomore Patrick Rooney faced off with a Holdingford guy and pulls out a close win in the 160-pound division, in which he went 3-1 while taking third place.

The Jaguars wrestling team's next action is on Friday, December 10, in a home dual meet against non-conference MACCRAY/Renville County West.

**Tip-Off Classic at A-C-GC has weather changes - Wrestling tournament is still underway

The semi-final games scheduled for tonight will be moved to Saturday night, tomorrow.

The Tip-Off Classic championship games will be moved to next Saturday, December 11.

The B-B-E wrestling tournament is underway as I type this. It began at about 2:00pm and it will continue as long as the teams feel they can stick around. No telling what the evening hours will bring for weather conditions - but I don't expect they'll be that attractive.

The Benson FibroMinn Invitational has some changes as well, with the first-round games being moved to Saturday night (tomorrow) and the championship games being tentatively scheduled for December 18 - assuming all four schools agree to that date. That is still in the works.

Stay tuned.

Did you know?

This year's Jaguars boys basketball team returns 58 points per game of offense from last year's 25-4 team. Another big item is the fact that they return 27 rebounds per game of board crashing muscle as well. In 23 years of B-B-E basketball, no team has returned that much offense from the previous year.

They begin the 2010-2011 season at 6pm tomorrow night (Friday) at the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City high school. Their opponent will be neighboring rival Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. If you want to see some exciting run-and-gun basketball on display, get to that game. It'll be fun to take in.

While I hardly ever make predictions on high school games, I can't ignore the fact that K-M-S only returns one starter from a 9-16 team. (A 5'10" junior guard) They have only one player listed as taller than 6-foot, a 6'1" senior forward who was a letter winner last year.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars have no players in the 5-foot-something range, two players listed at 6'1", with the rest of the roster being 6'2" or taller!

It'll be a blowout to take in for the season opener. I'll be getting pictures at the game along with a few video clips, after spending some time at the B-B-E wrestling tournament in Belgrade. (That begins at 3:30pm by the way)

The Jaguars' Round Two opponent in the Tip-Off Classic, which I predict will be West Central Area, will by no means be a pushover. They've got the talent to beat the Jaguars, so the Saturday night game will be much more competitive than the K-M-S game.

In sports, high expectations can be your friend or your enemy. Especially in a season where you have a target on your back every time you take the court. Just like the Sauk Centre girls basketball team, the Jaguars boys basketball team will have everybody gunning for them. No one can predict how the season will go, but I do have high hopes for the team. It'll be a very exciting year.

For the basketball teams this winter, I won't be putting up video clips that are more than a minute or so in length. While you can call me paranoid, I don't want opposing teams sitting on my website and learning much about how the Jaguars' offense/defense runs. Especially in the case of the girls team, who will have quite a new look over past years' versions after suffering heavy graduation losses in 2009 and 2010.

Another random but very exciting little nugget...Jaguars boys basketball head coach Dave Montbriand enters his 18th season as head coach with 267 career wins. In eight of his previous 17 years as head coach at B-B-E, he has guided the Jaguars to a sub-section championship game appearance. (1992, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010) On top of that, he has been on the sideline either as an assistant or head coach during all 22 seasons of B-B-E basketball, two as boys assistant in 1988-89 and 1989-90, and three as girls assistant from 2005-2008.

Stay tuned for more as the winter sports season is about to get underway.

More on the Benson FibroMinn girls basketball invitational

The Maccray Wolverines face Prairie Seeds Academy in the opening round of the Benson FibroMinn Invitational this week Friday. Tip-off is at 6:00pm.

About 25 minutes after the completion of that game, the host Benson Braves take on the Jaguars girls basketball team.

Benson, who was 21-7 overall last year and finished runners-up in Sub-Section 6AA-West, returns one starter and six letterwinners. They finished 12-4 (2nd) in the West Central South Conference.

Maccray won the Camden North Conference title last year with a 13-2 record. The Wolverines made a deep run in the Section 3A playoffs, losing in the North sub-section championship to Canby 60-55 to finish 22-5 overall. They return three very talented starters along with two letterwinners from last year.
