Coach Friedrichs wins his first round match in 3 OT!

Here's action from Coach Friedrichs facing off with Minnewaska's state champion Brandon Manderscheid...when Friedrichs wrestled at Sauk Centre in high school, he also competed at the state tournament under the guidance of Coach Ken Vogt. Manderscheid is a 2010 Minnewaska graduate and a three-time state entrant who won the 215-pound Class A championship during his senior year.

Below, B-B-E graduate Adam Marks squares off with B-B-E graduate Andy Larson, both former Jaguar wrestlers...

Over 80 wrestlers signed up today!

The gymnasium bleachers are at about 80% capacity, with a large number of fans in attendance for the first annual Rich Vos Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Over 80 wrestlers, including at least 35 walk-ons, will compete today in the two divisions.

The wrestlers gather for a large group photo prior to the start of the wrestling this afternoon...

*Don't miss a special news clip from today's action at the B-B-E High School on the 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 evening news tonight on WCCO Channel 4!!

Announcing the athletes prior to taking the mat.
A large number of recently-graduated athletes competed from New London-Spicer, Paynesville Area, Minnewaska Area and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City high schools. A huge amount of former B-B-E Jaguar wrestlers also competed as well.

Please be sure to attend the Rich Vos Memorial Tournament

The Rich Vos Memorial Tournament is tomorrow, Saturday, December 29, at the B-B-E High School.

It's the continuation of what Coach Vos had going as a fundraiser for the B-B-E wrestling program, an old-timers tournament. Doors open at 10:30am with wrestling to begin at noon. There will be two divisions, ages 19 to 25 and 26 and up. All competitors will be one year removed from high school or collegiate competition.

Concessions will be available throughout the day, with a spaghetti feed from 2 to 6pm and a silent auction from 1pm to 5pm.

All proceeds goes to a scholarship which will be given in Coach Vos's name.

At the Section 5A individual wrestling tournament at Minnewaska Area High School in February 2011.

It is very difficult to imagine the 2013 state wrestling tournament, at which I am sure B-B-E will have representation from the Jaguar team, and realize that Coach Vos won't be matside helping his guys be as competitive and successful as they possibly could be under the bright lights of the Xcel Energy Center. The fact that his team is having a remarkably strong 2012-13 season is a testament to the foundation that's been put down by Coach Vos and the rest of his coaching staff and parent support system at B-B-E.

It's even more difficult thinking of the family left behind by that fateful accident. My daughter is battling Influenza A (which has been going around at a rampant pace in central Minnesota), and this has been a difficult week for my family with that going on. It's kept my blogging time on this website to a minimum, which is too bad since I should've been promoting tomorrow's wrestling tournament all week long. While caring for my daughter, I think of Coach Vos's two young children...and I cry.

We're still in the healing process at B-B-E.

P.S. - I'll have no basketball score updates for tonight.

Welcoming the newest premier advertiser - Central Minnesota Credit Union

I'm working on upgrading the "premium-level" advertising on this website from the North American State Bank, the B-B-E Booster Club and Bonanza Valley State Bank. All their ads posted on the right will get a makeover. For the two banks mentioned and now the Central Minnesota Credit Union, their logos will have hyperlinks so you can click through them and access their respective business websites.

As I always say, the website would not exist without the proud support from members of the B-B-E area business community.

Just had lunch at Classic Company Dinner Theater

That was time well spent while eating lunch today with family at Brooten's new Classic Company Dinner Theater. They were playing an old-time classic movie on the big screen when we got there, and then before we got our food they put on a neat (made in 1970) classic movie featuring the story of Santa Claus.

They're taking reservations now for their dinner and a movie show on Saturday, December 29. A story on that show was featured in the December 20 issue of the Sauk Centre Herald.

Give them a call and book some seats! 320-346-2323. Also, be sure to check them out on Facebook!

More to be posted throughout the weekend.

Parents: please talk to your kids over the Christmas break about the issue of school violence and the stupidity and danger of kids creating fake or real threats on school students, staff and the community in general.

On Friday, St. Cloud-area schools had a rough go of it with a number of threats causing disruptions nearly the entire day.

Please do everything you can to make sure that type of stupidity never happens at B-B-E! We do not need those types of headlines!

8-0!

A glimpse of a timeout huddle in the middle of the second half.
The Jaguars on defense at Minnewaska.

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team improved to 8-0 tonight with a 75-53 win at Minnewaska Area. They led 38-26 at halftime.

In the first half, B-B-E led 7-2 with three minutes gone after Trey Heinsius earned his first points by grabbing a loose ball near the bucket and turning around for a quick jumper. They proceeded to go up 11-2 and then 13-5 with 13:15 left. The Lakers played from around 10 points or more down the rest of the way to the halftime buzzer.

With a little over 4 minutes left, Brian Goodwin had a steal and quick layup to make it 28-18 Jaguars. A jumper in the lane by Billy Borgerding with 30 seconds left gave the Jaguars a 12-point lead at 36-24, and both teams hit running layups in the final 10 seconds for the halftime score. In the second half, the Jaguars had a 53-35 lead with just over 10 minutes left.

B-B-E, who out-rebounded the smaller Lakers by a 49-36 margin, heads into the Christmas break averaging 70.0 points per game, while giving up 48.8 points defensively.

Action from the second half tonight at Minnewaska Area high school...

The B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team beat Eden Valley-Watkins 40-26 to move to 5-0 in dual meets. They lost their second dual of the night to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in their first loss of the season.

At Litchfield, in a gymnasium where you couldn't find a place to sit, the Melrose Area Dutchmen boys' basketball team fought into overtime against the former top-ranked Dragons but lost in overtime. I wasn't certain on the final score - BOB FM didn't come in that well while I was driving home along the shores of Lake Minnewaska - but I think Kirby Hemmesch said Litchfield 59, Melrose 55. (It was 65-59)

At Upsala, the Cardinals shredded Browerville 85-59 in a battle of Top-10 ranked Class A boys' basketball teams.

Area boys' basketball scores on Dec. 21:
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 58, Montevideo 48
#6-ranked Litchfield 65, #1-ranked Melrose Area 59 OT
Ashby 70, Hancock 64
EV-W 55, Maple Lake 48

Area girls' basketball scores on Dec. 21:
Kimball Area 60, Holdingford 55 (a CMC game)

Jaguars trail at halftime to the state-ranked Lakers

Megan Weller (40) and Becca Gruber (44) defend the paint in this photo from the first half tonight.

In a Central MN Conference game, the host B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team trails 24-17 at halftime to the state-ranked (Class AA) HL-W-W Lakers.

After falling back 4-0 in the opening minute of the game, the Jaguars kept it close for the entire first half. A 7-2 lead by the Lakers was cut to three with a shot by Brittany Roelike with 13:50 left, and the Jaguars hung around up to the first buzzer with good prevent defense and some good close-range shooting.

Here's the starter introductions...

*Update: that was a tough second half! The Lakers (7-2, 3-0 CMC) go home with a 53-35 win. They were ranked #15 in the latest Class AA poll (Minnesota Basketball News) just released earlier today.

The Lakers played a highly-active defense that swarmed the court all night, resulting in passing lanes being few and far between for the Jaguars.

Lined up for the National Anthem.

A couple neat local programming notes

Tony Sanders, a recent graduate of B-B-E who was involved in a wide variety of activities including the Fine Arts and athletics, will perform on Saturday night at the Classic Dinner Theater Company.

Santa is coming to Micki's on Friday!

If you haven't already, please be sure to make a visit to the Classic Dinner Theater Company in Brooten. (They have a Facebook page, by the way) What a fantastic venue for both great food and entertainment!

A second note, Santa Claus will visit Micki's in Belgrade on Friday. Check out the details in the Observer this week.

Also an FYI - the girls' basketball team hosts tonight, boys' basketball is at Minnewaska on Friday (aired on The Train and Smooth Magic!) while the wrestling team hosts a huge triangular on Friday that includes Eden Valley-Watkins and Section 5A favorite Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

With the final weights yet to be wrestled, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team has a commanding 29-6 lead over Sauk Centre-Melrose in a non-conference dual at SCHS. Apparent carbon monoxide leak at Paynesville Area Middle School prompts emergency help

At around 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning, December 18, mutual aid was called out for ambulance response from Melrose and Sauk Centre First Responders to the Paynesville Area Middle School.

Apparently, students are being taken out of the building with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. The suspected reason is that CO leaked down inside the building from roof vents and cold air intakes.

Last night at a choir concert at the Paynesville school, some people passed out and fainted. It is undetermined why this happened again this morning.

*Update at 11:07 a.m.: all students have been released from school in Paynesville. A large number of ambulances have responded to the emergency calls.

More information will be posted as this comes in.

(Can schools catch a break? This is crazy.)

Late three-point attempt to force a tie dances off the rim against Osakis

Peyton Miller (13) is a sophomore member of the Jaguars girls' basketball team who's had ample playing time off of the bench this season.

Out of a late B-B-E timeout called by Coach Anderson, Peyton Miller launched a three-pointer on a drawn play with 12 seconds left that would've forced a 43-43 tie if it didn't dance off of the rim. She got the shot off after getting through a double screen set by Becca Gruber and Megan Weller. After Osakis got the defensive rebound with 6 seconds left, B-B-E immediately fouled Annalise Savageau, a standout junior guard for the Silverstreaks. Savageau hit both ensuing free throw attempts to salt the 45-40 win for Osakis (7-0).

Great improvement from the beginning of the season is not on the horizon for the Jaguars - it is already here. The wins should soon follow. The Jaguars played their hearts out in this game against one of the top girls' basketball teams in the area. Only last week, Osakis took apart fellow sub-section rival Melrose in a 52-22 win last Thursday.

**Update: tune in to Smooth Magic 107 FM today at 1:00pm to hear the B-B-E High School Christmas Concert that was held on Monday, December 10.

Trey Heinsius makes a pass along the perimeter while being closely guarded by Patrick Knoblauch, arguably one of Sauk Centre's best athletes in recent memory.

The Jaguars boys' basketball team gets into Central Minnesota Conference action when they host a very good Eden Valley-Watkins team on Tuesday night. The Eagles are 3-1, with their only loss coming to Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta by a 49-34 score last Thursday in Morris. EV-W started the year 3-0.

Great first half against Osakis tonight

After falling back 6-0 out of the starting gate, the Jaguars girls' basketball team fought back to regain a few leads against undefeated Osakis on the home court tonight.

At halftime, the Silverstreaks (6-0) are up 24-20. The turnover stats show B-B-E 14, Osakis 8.

After falling back as much as 36-26 and 38-27, the Jaguars fought back to force a 38-38 tie with 3:34 left on the clock!

Final: Osakis 45, B-B-E 40.

B-B-E has lock down drills

In case any parents or anyone else was wondering, B-B-E does have lock down drills in both the elementary and high school. I know one was held last September, and I'm guessing up to five are held each year.

Those lock down drills (for an emergency such as but not limited to a school shooter) are held along with tornado drills and fire/evacuation drills.

No need to flood the offices with calls tomorrow wondering if B-B-E has a plan for such emergencies.

They do.

Junior High tournament at B-B-E cancelled today

A 7th/8th grade girls' basketball tournament at B-B-E has been cancelled for today. It was to take place at both the elementary and high school buildings, but the steady rain and sleet that's already coming down (at 7:00am) has nixed those plans.

When Santa Claus makes his trip to Brooten today, he will have to deal with rain unfortunately. Yikes! Not good.

PS - the rain won't prevent you from listening to the Coaches Roundup show this morning...D-Mac's interview with Coach Anderson is starting right now at 7:28am...

Just heard from a mother in Sauk Centre that her elementary student in a little shocked and upset over a classmate talking about how many guns his family has at home and that he is going to bring one to school and "shoot people in the face"

Wow, that kid is messed up!

Don't worry, that mother is reporting it, and hopefully something is done about it. That type of BS talk get snuffed out right away if it ever happens at B-B-E!

Think we're immune from violence and mental illness in our small towns? No way.

Boys' basketball wins tough outing at Sauk Centre, girls' basketball suffers loss to Maple Lake

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team lost 55-47 to visiting Maple Lake tonight in their second Central Minnesota Conference game of the season. Up next: a home game against undefeated Osakis (6-0) next Monday with coverage being on Smooth Magic 107 and also the Train 106.5. Maple Lake is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the CMC, while the Jaguars fell to 2-4 overall with the loss.

Central Minnesota Conference girls' basketball scores on Dec. 14:
Eden Valley-Watkins 57, Kimball Area 38
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 79, Pierz 38
Rockford Area 71, Holdingford 55

James Kuefler, shown driving the baseline on his way to the basket, led the Jaguars with 20 points.

At Sauk Centre, the Jaguars boys' basketball team won 71-57 after getting the lead up to 55-36 with 7:48 on the clock. Brian Goodwin earned a three-point play at that time for the 19-point advantage, but fellow AAU-er Patrick Knoblauch answered that only nine seconds later with a three-pointer to keep Sauk Centre in it.

B-B-E blasted the Mainstreeters in the opening minutes, and a three-point play by James Kuefler with 12:17 left in the first half put the Jaguars up 15-3. For those first few minutes, the Mainstreeters seemed a little shell-shocked. For the final 11 minutes or so of the first half, they toughened up and didn't give B-B-E many open looks.

Overall, Sauk Centre played relatively tough defense for about 80 percent of the game. It was those few moments where they were not disciplined on the defensive end where the Jaguars gave them fits. The Mainstreeters can get up and down the floor pretty quickly, but they simply did not have the personnel to run with the Jaguars.

Here's a clip from around 10 minutes left in the first half...check out the slick move from Trey Heinsius while grabbing a steal and then calling a timeout...

Hug your children often

Click to read more about Newtown, Connecticut and the school shooting that took place there this morning:
http://saukheraldreporter.blogspot.com/2012/12/wikipedia-link-to-newtown-ct.html

(*That was updated at 6 p.m. before I left to the game in Sauk Centre)

Interesting: in 1927, a farmer killed 38 children using explosives in a school building that housed 314 students in rural Michigan.

It is possible that this was a custody case gone wrong, as the shooter was a father of a student at the school but lived 77 miles away in New Jersey.

However, we must continue our attempts to root out bullying in our schools. I'm not naive enough to think that bullying does not take place at B-B-E, but it better not happen around any of my children there.

Losing Coach Rich Vos in October was absolutely awful for our community to endure. Needing a gang of extra counselors and other professionals in the school after that dark day was a sad but necessary act. We need to do everything we can to carry on with Coach Vos's positive spirit, and do everything we can to love and care for others.

Bullying is a problem. Mental illness and how we deal with it is a problem. Let's keep our eye on the ball and try to make the world a better place.

It has been quite a night for Jaguar fans, watching their team jump out to a 40-0 lead through the 152-pound match. Paynesville Area falls to 4-2 in duals, while the Jaguars improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

Final score: B-B-E 49, Paynesville Area 15. The Bulldogs got two pins and a decision...that's it; the Jaguars, meanwhile, won 11 of the 14 matches, with 10 of those 11 being contested.

That's a wrap!

...after the 145-pound match...

The closest a B-B-E wrestling team has gotten to beating Paynesville was in the 1990 Sub-Region 5A playoffs, when the Jaguars lost to the Bulldogs in the championship match by a 32-18 score. Interestingly, the father of two of this year's Jaguar wrestlers was a senior on that team: Joe Schramel.

Last season the Jaguars were semi-competitive with Paynesville in a 38-21 loss.

Beating Paynesville tonight was especially enjoyable by former head coach Chuck Marks, who had a front row seat while helping coach and cheer on the guys the entire night.

B-B-E fans gave a nice salute to the team after the conclusion of the heavyweight match.

Hats off to head coach B.J. Friedrichs, as he has done a remarkable job keeping the ship running after the loss of Coach Vos. Tonight Coach Friedrichs was focused on his guys the entire way. Not once did he give the slightest hint of gloating as the Jaguars piled up the points. He was classy the entire way and made sure his team kept their heads straight as well. When a match gets away like that, it's easy for athletes on either team to lose focus, especially as you climb up the weights. That didn't happen tonight, especially when our freshmen heavyweight (rookie) Ben Feuerhake won a 7-2 decision over Paynesville senior Tanner Harder in the final match. That may have been the highlight of the night and the icing on the cake.

There was a bit of a bittersweet feeling, though, without having Coach Vos enjoying the win for a team that he had a direct hand in building.

Up next: a trip to Sauk Centre next Tuesday night to face Sauk Centre-Melrose in a second straight non-conference border battle.

More to follow later tonight.

Coming tonight: a wrestling border battle with Payesville! (on Parents Night)

If there was a wrestling match to get "up" for, it's coming tonight to the B-B-E high school.

Tonight the Jaguars wrestling team (2-0) host section and neighboring rival Paynesville Area (4-1) in a non-conference meet with JV action beginning at 5:30pm. The Bulldogs have put together an impressive early-season resume, having picked up dual wins over state-ranked LPQV/D-B and Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/Hancock. Both are Class AA schools, while Paynesville Area and B-B-E compete in Class A for postseason honors.

Oh, and by the way, it's also Parents Night where the team will honor those who make it all happen - Mom & Dad.

This is a huge meet, as the winner gets the inside track on a better playoff ranking in Section 5A. Both teams have been spoken of as contenders for the section championship.

In the 25-year history of B-B-E Jaguar athletics, I do not have record of the Jaguars beating the Bulldogs on the wrestling mats. I hope that changes tonight!

A youth elementary wrestling dual meet takes place with somewhere around 12 matches taking place starting at 5:30pm. This is a neat way for B-B-E and Paynesville elementary wrestlers to get some nice exposure of their skills and talents. The JV match follows that, and the varsity match will most likely begin around 7:30pm.

Jaguar wrestlers improve to 2-0 in duals

In a non-conference dual on the home mats, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team improved to 2-0 in dual meets with a 40-33 win over Royalton/Upsala. R/U (0-4) had three forfeits on the night, and Patrick Rooney's 8-3 decision at 220 pounds handed the win to the Jaguars, who trailed 27-25 after the 170-pound match was complete. This was quite the win for the Jaguars, as they would've lost without having all weights above 152 filled out. Great job!

Up next: a hugely important section dual against Paynesville Area (4-1) on the home mats on Thursday night. The Bulldogs were involved in a West Central Conference triangular in Benson tonight and won twice over Benson and also Sauk Centre/Melrose. When Benson squared off with SC-M, 12 of the 14 matches were decided by pin or forfeit, with the Braves prevailing 42-36. The Bulldogs drubbed Benson 60-21 and SC-M 46-21.

Tough loss at Kimball in CMC opener

The Jaguars girls' basketball team had their chances but lost 38-33 at Kimball Area (4-2) tonight in the Central Minnesota Conference girls' basketball opener. They had it tied 31-31 in the second half but went ice cold down the stretch to slip below .500 at 2-3 overall. In terms of field-goal shooting, they fired a remarkably warm 48.3 % from the floor but attempted only 29 shots in the game. Defensively, they played a great game but couldn't get the offense on track.

At NL-S, the Jaguars boys' basketball team won their 38th game in a row by a 71-62 score.

TIp-off is coming shortly at NL-S! Jaguars build early lead vs. the Wildcats

Tip-off is at 7:40pm with coverage on 106.5 FM the Train of the B-B-E vs. NL-S border battle boys' basketball game!

With 15:12 to go in the first half, both teams are trying to run on the other and the score is tied at 5-5.

James Kuefler's shot put the Jaguars up 7-5 with 14:30 left.

With 13:42 left, B-B-E has a 12-5 lead and the Wildcats called a timeout.

With 4 minutes on the clock, the Jaguars are up 27-14!

Now it's 35-17 with less than a minute to go before halftime.

A last-second jump shot by Brian Goodwin put the Jaguars up 39-21 right before the halftime buzzer.

In the second half, the Jaguars are maintaining their lead and began subbing in JV players with 12:35 to go, B-B-E 51, NL-S 34. They were by no means calling off the dogs, but they are trying to stretch out the bench.

At Kimball Area, the Jaguars girls' basketball team is trailing 15-4 in the first half. The Cubs are 3-2 overall. Update: at halftime the Jaguars cut the deficit down to a manageable score with Kimball up 21-19.

Busy night tonight for Jaguar fans

After coaching her first home game last week, Coach Anderson leads her Jaguars in the team's first Central Minnesota Conference game at Kimball Area tonight.

Take your pick and pick your poison...the Jaguars have three varsity teams in action tonight.

On the home mats, the B-B-E wrestling team hosts Royalton/Upsala in a dual meet at 7:00pm (JV 6:00). I look for great things to happen in that dual as they heat up the December schedule with additional wins.

At Kimball Area, the Jaguars girls' basketball team faces the Cubs in the Central Minnesota Conference opener. The Jaguars need to give a little payback, as they were whipped by the Cubs in last year's CMC opener (also at Kimball) in a 58-34 loss.

Just down Highway 71 at New London-Spicer, the Jaguars boys' basketball team squares off with a very good Wildcats team in a much-anticipated border battle. That game will be on the Train, although not with coverage from the usual suspects (tip of the hat to Bill Dean and Don Leukam).

Also a big FYI: some of the schedules on the internet show the boys' basketball team hosting Sauk Centre this Friday night. That's not what will happen, as the Mainstreeters will host B-B-E in the non-conference border battle. Their next home game is next Tuesday (Dec. 18) against Eden Valley-Watkins in the conference opener. On Friday, December 21, the Jaguars travel into Pope County to face a much-improved Minnewaska Area team.

While I grabbed your attention, click on this link if you have a few minutes to spare and read up on how Zach Huisken's Division II college basketball career started off with a bang...not the right type of bang either:
http://www.pipestonestar.com/Stories/Story.cfm?SID=38822. I'll never forget that game last March, when the Jaguars beat Huisken's Southwest Christian squad in the Class A state title game. It was a pure heavyweight, dogfight, take-no-prisoners type of ball game that should really make any B-B-E fan proud that our Jaguars came out on top.
