Here in the Bonanza Valley we are battling January-like conditions outside! On Saturday we had a high of 19 degrees, with about three inches of new snow. The wind? Oh, yeah! The wind out of the northwest hovers between 20 and 25 mph!

(Video) Lent worship sermon

Here's Pastor Dalen's sermon given during the Lenten worship on Wednesday, March 14 at Crow River Lutheran church:

Be sure to take in the Brooten Ambulance crew's pancake and sausage breakfast today (Sunday) at the Brooten American Legion hall. They will serve until 1 o'clock.

Section championship boys' basketball scores on March 16:
St. Cloud Cathedral 55, Eden Valley-Watkins 54
Mahnomen/Waubun 71, Hancock 64 (the Owls led by five points at 59-54 with around six minutes left and then went stone cold, scoring just five points the rest of the way.
Hinckley-Finlayson 72, Cromwell-Wright 40
Mayer Lutheran 78, Springfield 75

In the Section 6AA title game at Halenbeck Hall, St. Cloud Cathedral's Nick Schaefer hit an NBA three-pointer at the buzzer to lift his Crusaders team to the state tournament. It was a stunning ending to a game that EV-W appeared to have in hand. You can watch the ending and the epic shot at this website link: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/6863522/5aac8c71bed6d010b81be244.

Also, yesterday at the state tournament, Sauk Centre's girls' basketball team won the Class 2A state title after they beat defending state champion Roseau 63-52. With just over 10 minutes to go, the Mainstreeters (33-0) had a 49-28 lead. Things got real dicey in the final minutes, with the Rams coming back to within three points (55-52) with about two minutes left. Congratulations to Coach Scott Bergman and his program! They were 0-3 in state title games before yesterday.

State tournament

Menahga's girls' basketball team lost 74-69 to Minneota in today's quarterfinal round game this afternoon in Minneapolis.

In the Section 3AA boys' basketball championship game in Marshall, the Minnewaska Area Lakers trailed 29-25 to Pipestone Area at halftime ... but late in the final minute the Lakers pulled ahead 51-49.

Senior Matt Gruber was fouled with about 45 seconds left for a bonus opportunity. He made the first one, then made the bonus to make it a 53-49 game. The Arrows actually fouled him seven seconds earlier, but the referees didn't call it right away.

Pipestone Area then went to the free throw line with 38.8 seconds left and got a bonus opportunity. They made both, making it a 53-51 game.

Then with 36.2 seconds left, senior Jackson Johnsrud was fouled and hit the front end of a bonus opportunity. He made the second one for a 55-51 lead. The Arrows missed on their next possession, but then with 19.6 seconds left, the Lakers threw the ball away.

Pipestone Area then dilly-dallied after a timeout! Crazy! They literally walked the ball up the court, trailing by four points...and with five seconds left after missing on a shot, they fouled Grant Jensen. He made the front end of a bonus shot for a five-point lead. Jensen's second free throw was no good, and the Arrows called their last remaining timeout with 4.2 seconds left.

The Arrows made a three-point shot as the final seconds ticked off...it was meaningless! (Nice effort, but it didn't matter!) Minnewaska Area (21-7 overall) advances to the Class 2A state tournament, which opens next Wednesday in Minneapolis. I believe that Minnewaska Area hasn't played in the state tournament since 2001. In 2003, they lost 63-37 to Pipestone Area in the Section 3AA championship game. They went 15 years without playing in a section title game.

Final score: Minnewaska Area 56, Pipestone Area 54. The Lakers went 12-of-18 at the free throw line in the game and overcame 14 turnovers. A fun sidebar: the Lakers are also the Section 3AA academic champions.

Fun fact: Grant Jensen's dad is Eric Jensen, a 1987 graduate of Brooten who played for the Buccaneers boys' basketball team. As a senior in the 1986-87 season, Eric's Buccaneers team went 12-1 in the Prairie Conference to win the title under the head coaching of Brad Goodwin.

...in Section 6AA, Eden Valley-Watkins' boys' basketball team beat Pine City 50-42 in the sub-section championship game last night. They face St. Cloud Cathedral in the section title game on Friday night this week at SCSU at 6 p.m. Earlier in the postseason, EV-W vanquished the Central Minnesota Conference champions, Maple Lake, by a 39-37 score in the semifinals. EV-W, winners of 11 games in a row, finished one game out of first place in the CMC (12-2) to Maple Lake's 13-1 record.

...in the Section 5AAA boys' basketball finals, Willmar got mauled by Delano in a 75-54 loss. The Cardinals finish the year 26-3.

Sub-section finals

The sub-section final was tied 29-29 at halftime tonight at Foley! The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team rocketed out to a 15-4 lead against top-seeded Hinckley-Finlayson during the first six minutes of the game.

In the second half, Hinckley-Finlayson has opened up a 49-39 lead. A shot by Ethan Schwinghammer made the score 51-41.

Ashton Dingmann hit a layup for a 53-43 score. Evan Wiener then went to the line with a bonus opportunity, made the first one and completed the bonus for a 53-45 score with under seven minutes to go.

Wiener again went to the line for a bonus shot, hit the first one and then the second at the 6:31 mark...53-47 score!

55-49 Hinckley-Finlayson ahead with 5:30 left! Timeout Jaguars.

Final score: H-F 72, B-B-E 54. A 17-8 disparity in turnovers hurt B-B-E in the game.

Basketball playoffs continue

Tonight at halftime, the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team trails 30-26 to St. John's Prep in the Sub-Section 5A-South semifinals.

The Jaguars tied it at 30-30 after the break, and they held a 34-33 lead after that. With seven minutes left, the Johnnies lead 36-34.

With 2:26 left, the Jaguars have a 44-42 lead.

Final score: B-B-E 53, St. John's Prep 47. The Jaguars advance to the subsection finals for the fifth time in the last six seasons and 14th time overall in school history. The Sub-Section 5A-South championship game is Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at Foley high school; the opponent will be top-seeded Hinckley-Finlayson (24-4), who is averaging 77.8 points per game.

The Train 106.5 FM carried tonight's game.

In other Section 5A boys' basketball games:
Cromwell-Wright 60, Browerville 55 (2 OT)
Hinckley-Finlayson 79, Braham 63
Nevis 52, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 39

In Section 3AA, the Minnewaska Area Lakers beat New London-Spicer 68-66 to advance to the section finals.

Bitter ending in section finals

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team could not have asked for a better first half in their second straight appearance in the Section 5A championship game. Against a high-octane, undefeated Menahga Braves team, the Jaguars utilized stifling defense to jump ahead 23-17 at halftime.

The second half, as they say, was a different story. After going up 25-17, the Jaguars gave up an 8-0 run that made it a new game.

A shot by Macie Kirckof with 3:05 left put the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team ahead 47-46, but it would be the last lead of the night from that point on.

Here's video from the final minutes:

Final score: Menagha 56, B-B-E 52. Season over with a final record of 22-8, the most wins in school history. The Jaguars fall to 0-5 in section championship games. Very tough one to swallow.

Area section championship girls' basketball games on Friday:
Minneota 82, Southwest MN Christian 74 (Section 3A)
Sauk Centre 63, St. Cloud Cathedral 40 (Section 6AA)
Ada-Borup/Norman County West 64, Underwood 48 (Section 6A)
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 49, Eden Valley-Watkins 48 (Section 3A)

Playoff win

The B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team overwhelmed Onamia tonight in their Sub-Section 5A-South playoff opener. At halftime, the Jaguars were ahead 25-7.

Final score: B-B-E 60, Onamia 27.

Now 11-16 overall, the No. 2-seeded Jaguars advance to the semifinals this Saturday night in Foley. Tip-off will be approximately 7:45 p.m. Their opponent will be No. 6-seeded St. John's Prep. The Johnnies (7-15) earned an upset 73-68 win over Prairie Conference rival Swanville in another quarterfinal game tonight.

Top-seeded Hinckley-Finlayson (23-4) faces No. 4-seeded Braham (13-14) in the other semifinal game. That game will start at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Foley.

The sub-section final is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12 at a site TBD, but my guess is it will be back in Foley. We probably won't know until Sunday.

In another area sub-section tonight...
In a Sub-Section 3AA-North boys' basketball semifinal game, Minnewaska Area won an epic battle with long-time conference and border battle rival Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 58-51 in overtime. The Lakers (19-7) take on New London-Spicer in the championship on Saturday. NL-S beat Redwood Valley 82-72 in the other semifinal game.

Here's a clip from the 152-pound state championship match on Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center:

Check out this flashback five years ago: http://bbejaguars.blogspot.com/2013/03/tyler-tensen-is-headed-for-championship.html.

By my count, six B-B-E wrestlers in school history have wrestled in a state title match. They are: Brendan Bogart (1989, first place); Kermit Hanson (1989, second place); Patrick Rooney (2013, second place); Tyler Tensen (2013, second place) and then this year we add Canon Swanson (second) and Adam Jaeger (champion) to that list.

Halftime

The B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team sits in a 26-26 halftime tie with East Central in the sub-section championship game tonight. They missed a shot in the final seconds that would have put them ahead at the buzzer.

Early in the second half, three key Eagles players have three fouls each, which will bode well for the Jaguars. B-B-E has a 35-30 lead with 14 minutes remaining.

Final score: B-B-E 54, East Central 42. The Jaguars take a 22-7 record into this Friday's Section 5A title game!!

Pit stop

Striking gold at Xcel Energy Center!

Pit stop at Perkins in Monticello as I head back home. I haven't had a chance to really catch my breath since Wednesday afternoon. It's been go, go, go, go, go!

We have a lot to soak up!! Our first state wrestling champion in 29 years!!! And just our second in B-B-E history! I still can't wrap my head around it!

Adam Jaeger finishes the season 34-0. That is incredible! I'm on WiFi now uploading the video clip of Jaeger getting his gold medal at the awards ceremony.

**Here's that video clip, recorded in ultra-high definition (needs an updated browser to watch it in ultra-HD). Not very often do I get a chance to witness greatness like this! There's no doubt about it now: B-B-E has an elite, small-school wrestling program!!!

State championship round

At 106 pounds, K-M-S's Will Maagaard claimed the Class 1A title with a win by a 10-7 decision.

**Update: Swanson lost a 4-0 decision to finish with a silver medal and a 47-3 overall record this season. He trailed 1-0 going into the final minute of the third period.  It was a great match.

**In the playoff semifinals, the B-B-E Jaguars girls' basketball team defeated Swanvilla 62-41. At halftime, they trailed 30-24 to the No. 4-seeded Swanville Bulldogs (14-10). Next: the subsection finals on Tuesday, March 6 at Foley high school at 7 p.m.!

A 29-year drought at B-B-E is over! Adam Jaeger earned a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period to win a 3-1 decision and finish his senior year with a perfect 34-0 record!! He defeated senior Jacob Tvinnereim (48-6) of Jackson County Central. HOW COOL IS THAT! This is B-B-E's first wrestling state title since 1989, when Brendan Bogart won a state title in our first year as a paired program under the Jaguars banner.

Here's a fun tid bit I learned tonight: the paid attendance at the state wrestling tournament was 54,528. The capacity of the Xcel Energy Center is approximately 19,300.

State quarterfinals!

Adam Jaeger raises his arm for the second time today after he won his state quarterfinal match at the Xcel Energy Center. This makes it two years in a row that the senior will compete in the state semis!

HOW ABOUT THAT!

For the first time in school history, the B-B-E Jaguars wrestling team will have four team members competing in the Class 1A state tournament semifinals.

The Jaguars went 4-0 in tonight's quarterfinals!! All four advance!! It happened rather quickly, too. The four wins came within a span of just 31 minutes at Xcel Energy Center.

Read all about it at the Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper's website (with video!): http://www.bonanzavalleyvoice.com/story/2018/02/15/sports/b-b-e-jaguars-thunder-through-state-quarters/577.html.

State wrestling openers!

Four members of the B-B-E  Jaguars wrestling team advanced to the Class 1A state quarterfinals!

At 113 pounds, Blaine Fischer received a forfeit win after his opponent, No. 1-ranked and two-time defending state champion Jeron Matson of Kenyon-Wanamingo, was disqualified for breaking the MSHSL code of conduct on Wednesday night in St. Paul. Fischer advances to tonight's quarterfinal round. *Up next in the quarters: Fischer (39-13) faces sophomore Marshall Michienzi (41-8) of Deer River; Michienzi, ranked No. 9 in the February 23 Guillotine poll at 113 pounds, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 decision win over Sibley East's Derek Steele (34-17).

At 120 pounds, Canon Swanson earned a pin in the first period to advance to the state quarterfinals. Swanson won by fall (1:00) over freshmen Caden Anderson (23-8) of Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC). *Up next in the quarters: Swanson (45-2) faces eighth grader Jacob Leibold (30-14) of Royalton-Upsala. Leibold won his first round by a 7-2 decision against senior Landon Byer (33-14) of Frazee.

At 126 pounds, Tyler Jensen was pinned in the first period. Jensen lost by fall (1:28) to senior Cole Rasmussen (12-5) of Triton (based in Dodge Center). He will have to wait to see if Rasmussen wins in the state quarterfinals tonight. If that happens, Jensen will get a shot to advance in the wrestleback round that begins later tonight.

At 132 pounds, Tyler Bents blasted out to a 15-2 lead before advancing with a win by by fall (4:38) over junior Trever Arceneau (33-18) of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie. *Up next in the quarters: Bents (43-7) faces junior Joash Lord (30-8) of Norwood-Young America; Lord advanced to the quarterfinals with a win by a 7-4 decision over freshmen Kaden Hiemenz (34-15) of Frazee.

At 152 pounds, Adam Jaeger won by a first-period fall (1:44) over freshmen Austin Donnay (16-28) of Kimball Area to advance to the quarterfinals. *Next in the quarters: Jaeger (31-0) faces senior Adam Rients (33-9) of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (WEM/JWP). Rients won his opening-round match by fall (5:07) over sophomore Zane Swanson (34-15) of Ottertail Central.

At 160 pounds, Isaiah Gilbert lost a 23-10 major decision to senior No. 2-ranked Jeremiah Colon (34-3) of Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial. He awaits to see if he can compete in wrestlebacks tonight.

I haven't had a chance to really assess how other wrestlers have fared from other schools. I visited briefly with head coach Brandon Gruchow of West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville, and he said that his Knights wrestlers went 4-2 in the opening round. The two losses were by very slim margins (both decisions).
